Getting frustrated with inaccurate (out dated), incomplete and scattered info.

I am once again confused about Trainz versions and/or build numbers. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Trainz/Version_And_Build_Numbers

The CM help is utterly useless. Every page I get states no text entered. I'm getting lost on where to go for certain pieces of info.

All this time, I've been thinking that TS2009 was up to build 2.0 because that's the version of CM that comes up with it. According to the Wiki, that's back to 2004?

All my frustration is stemming from making an invisible track. It's working fine in TS12. I'm making another (New KUID) to be backward compatible with TS09. But I keep getting errors using the "invisible" or "surveyor-only" tags. I'm looking at the CCG of 2006. Use "invisible" for Track type, "surveyor-only" for everything else.

Is there a newer CCG I don't know about?

So the "version" associated to TS09, 41844 is 2.9? When I edit an old asset... 2.0 is updated to 2.9. So one of my confusing points is why is CM 2.0 updating to 2.9.

TS12, 49922 is 3.6, right?

I hope my frustration doesn't rub off on you and I thank you for your time and efforts,

Joe

As far as the update to 2.9 goes, that's because 2.7 and earlier have reached their "End of Life" and are no longer supported - therefore all assets being created or edited should AT LEAST be 2.9 compatible.

You can dodge that bullet however, but NOT using the Content Manager and choosing "Edit in Explorer" and using Notepad to edit the config.txt

I think the OP is asking for the VERSION numbers as in the olden days a NEW EDITION of Trainz only received a new Version number, regardless of being SPx or Build xxx.

I would like to know too what the version numbers of TS09, TS10 and TS12 are (not the Build numbers) as I understood TS 2009 is version V 2.9, TS 2010 is V 3.0 and TS 2012 is V 3.1. What the heck then is Version 3.6? If the Version numbers are different to my quoted ones, why not name say, TS10 as V 3.0 only and just add on the Build number? Then there would be no confusion as sure as hell I do not know all the Build numbers floating about. I only see the Build numbers displayed on my TS09, TS10 and TS12 but can not see any Version number there. Why not, what is the mystery to keep these so secret if they differ from my quoted Version numbers as I as a content creator also would like and need to know.

Are you confused with all that, I sure am.

I think if you check the version of Content Manager, this depicts the actual version of Trainz.

I might be off on left field somewhere beyond the dugouts on this, but this is my observation.

I too would like to know what the versions are. This is almost as a bad as trying to find the correct driver for an HP Officejet printer where the part number of the printer does not match up to the driver name associated with it.

In the later versions, the SP also makes a difference. From memory:

TS2009 (no patches): 2.9
TS2009 (SP1): 3.0
TS2009 (SP2): 3.1
TS2009 (SP3): Unknown, but I'm guessing it's 3.2.
TS2009 (SP4): 3.3
TS2010 (no patches): 3.2
TS2010 (SP1/SP2): Unknown, but I'm guessing it's 3.2
TS2010 (SP3): 3.3 (This includes builds 43434, 44088, and 49933)
TS2010 (SP4): 3.4 (This includes builds 46170 and 49938)
TS12 (builds below 48249): 3.5
TS12 (48249 or higher): 3.6

Hopefully this helps.

Shane

Thanks Shane :)

Bl**dy confusing if you ask me, no sort of system there to logically pick the Version number. Oh well, I thought my soon to be released locomotive for TS12 needs Version number 3.1, how wrong can I get ?

Cheers

That's what happens when service packs are added to the equation I'd say. It was a similar story for the earlier versions (for example UTC was 1.5, whereas TRS2004 was a number between 2.0 and 2.4 depending on service pack)

I bought Trains 2009, 2010 and 2012 Trainz in the sale because 2012 graphics hung. I installed 2009 which worked but had the manual for 2010, I then installed 2010 and had the above help pages problem. I closed it and ran it again. It applied a load of patches but still empty help pages. I ran it again. Yet more patches were applied. Still no help for contents manager. I ran it again. No patches to apply this time but still no help for Contents Manager.

Where did it say before I bought Trainz that these problems existed or that I needed to apply fixes? Would sales have been lost if it had clearly stated that these problems existed but how to get round them? I doubt it. Will future sales be lost because of the frustration caused to users? I suspect so. Would Support get fewer calls if the problems were either fixed or admitted to? Almost certainly. Trainz is an excellent product and Support seems to me to be very good. BUT you don't sell Ferraris by missing off the trim or failing to supply a manual.

Is there a simple getting started guide to trainz? If so, where and if not, why not?

I too am getting extremely frustrated. It would help if there was a Sticky stating what the known problems are, what is happening about them and giving an estimate when they will be fixed. That way more time can be spent fixing the problems instead of replying to customers.

There isn't a Getting Started guide as such, although I am looking into creating one.

For the newer Trainz versions, there is a manual in online form by clicking Manual on the Launcher screen.

Thanks. Shane.
As I said, the manual for Trainz 2009 says it is the Manual for Trainz 2010 which, while it may well apply to 2009 too, is less than helpful and causes confusion. How difficult would it be to add a pop-up saying "and 2009" or just have a "Read me" Sticky for each version mentioning that the 2010 manual applies to 2009 too? It Has to be more effecient than replying to everyone who contacts support about it, not to mention the number of hours spent by frustrated customers. Likewise,- point your "help" links at the Manual or say "Please refer to the manual instead of these help pages as we can't be bothered to support a product which is a couple of years old".

Sorry if I sound cynical but I don't like having to spend a substantial part of my remaining years faffing around with something I should not have to.

I know what you mean, although if you have Service Pack 4 (build 44653) then it is very similar to TS2010 with a few exceptions (mainly to do with layers and Speedtrees)

TS2009 (no patches): 2.9
TS2009 (SP1): 3.0
TS2009 (SP2): 3.1
TS2009 (SP3): Unknown, but I'm guessing it's 3.2.
TS2009 (SP4): 3.3
TS2010 (no patches): 3.2
TS2010 (SP1/SP2): Unknown, but I'm guessing it's 3.2
TS2010 (SP3): 3.3 (This includes builds 43434, 44088, and 49933)
TS2010 (SP4): 3.4 (This includes builds 46170 and 49938)
TS12 (builds below 48249): 3.5
TS12 (48249 or higher): 3.6

I'm concluding 49922 of TS12 is on a totally different scale from 49933 of TS2010. I'm also concluding I'm missing SP4, 3.4, 49938 for TS2010 Since I'm still on 49933.

So when I'm making my assets for TS2009 , I should go with 3.3, since I have SP4 installed?

Yes, you can, or you can "downbuild" them to 2.9.

OK, so shooting for 2.9... to make my track invisible in Driver, do I use the "invisible 1" tag or the "surveyor-only" tag. CCG2006 states the "invisible" tag is ONLY for track. If that's still true, maybe I'm putting it in the wrong place.

surveyor-only 1 for kind track, I looked at a TS12 builtin, downloaded ones are the same. 2.9 upwards but you will need a stitched mesh config.

Have a look at kuid:354694:51012
