Gas Prices and Trainz

It has recently come to my attention that the most pressing Trainz based controversy has to do with the prices listed on Trainz content gas stations and signs. Members are besides themselves in pointing out the discrepancies in prices between nations, states and counties. They are demanding script based adjustable content, and now an "arn" for gas station signs. Truly this catastrophe affects us all, and it can't be very long before the requirements for content creation and reskinning are even more daunting. Quite frankly, I don't see how creation will be able to persist without a web based data base of business across the world, and their prices from the beginning of the steam era to current day.

I suppose we'll have to return to the days of "PB" and "US Fuels".

I have to say this, its just a game. If I wanted real life reminders I'd walk down the street, but then again, we are here to 'simulate' the economy of the trainz nation.:p from lumber products to ethanol consumption. I looks like prices are here to stay. Keep it under 2 bucks per gal.

Best Regards
Mike S.

First they want updated prices. Then they'll want to simulate a fuel shortage. What's next a string of carz that shows up when the shortage happens?

I agree, Ed and Mike. I wanted to simulate the real world right down the gas prices, I wouldn't be using Trainz. This is my exit from reality for at least few hours a day plus quite a few more on the weekends!

All true. Throw in the "era factor" and pricing can range from ridiculous to sublime. Like the others, I tend to just ignore things like that and go with the flow - so to speak. If we're going to simulate the running of trains, why not use a universal monetary system based on 'fleegals' or 'kornblatts'?

:cool::hehe:

Oooh errrr! I hope this hasn't escalated from my question on your gas station Ed. My most sincere and humble apologies, it was certainly no intention of mine to start a forecourt price war! Does that make me the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of fuel related asset building?

Well, it would be impolite to not accept your gracious apologies, however I did not take note of who started the price questions, I find it mildly amusing, and I can't imagine a scenario which will please everyone concerning gas station signage.;)

We will have to have all the different bank ATM's so that we can get the money to pay for the gas? Wait a minute. Gas in australia is what we use to light fires with. Sorry Ed . I'm derailed.

I'm pretty sure I instigated the fuel debate so I'll hold my hands up for that Ed. Guilty as charged though I certainly never meant a debate to ensue. There's no accounting for taste though...

Now THIS is the kind of thread I remember from long ago; witty and thought-provoking. The sheer absurdity of anyone trying to cope with all the possibilities that would allow control of a simple gas station sign is mind-boggling.

Consider me boggled. :hehe:

Just out of interest, what era would these prices have been appropriate for in America, assuming they mean 0.999 and 1.099 US dollars per gallon?

You KNOW that there will have to be an adjustment available on the station to allow for price discrepancies against the base price, such as the really expensive station down the street or the three stations on opposite corners involved in a price war. :hehe:

Frankly, I know there are other gas stations on the DLS (I even had a 7-11 in one of my routes I was building before it got lost) and I never even paid attention to the numbers on the sign. Like the other "escape from reality" post, if I wanted to know what the REAL gas prices were, I'd just drive down the street. I can't say that the prices are on my screen long enough to even be noticed as the train whizzes past anyway.

I took this shot myself while on a cruise (Ocho Rios):

It's in Pesos (I hope).

That would be around 1979 and again in 1986 briefly. I've found this site:

The sign was actually meant to be from the 1950's, but I was restricted somewhat by the original photo and what I could reasonably do with it in Photoshop. Also by my complete lack of knowledge and research into American gasoline prices.

But the average of the estimates is (1907+1979+1986)/3 = 1957 which is right in the era I was aiming for.:hehe: Now that's modelling.
