Garbage as a product

Purveyor of the Forgotten
I posted this in Dave Snow's freeware thread, then decided that a seprate thread would be a better idea..

Here is the original post in response to a question about Dave's garbage containers:

Railroad Model Craftsman magazine did a 2 part article I think a year ago....

For loading a forklift / bucket loader with forks move the containers under a conveyor belt where they load the containers and seal them....

Unloading they are removed from the cars, dumped, and reloaded as empties.

For loading you would need some sort of Transfer station (Garbage truck dump site), sorting building (Gotta get anything out that can be recycled), and a loading station for the containers... Some of the steel sided buildings that Dave and other have put up could be used.

For unloading, a track with dirt or asphalt for the forklift / bucket loader with forks to remove them from the cars... unloading could be many different methods.

Some places transfer the garbage to a barge and it is dumped at sea, some places burn it for power, some places bury it.

Now for Trainz purposes...

Someone with more experience than I could make a PL or BI assets that could load / empty a garbage product.

Dave's containers would have to be configured for a empty and a loaded weight that the PL or BI industry assets could load/unload.

That is my guess, others with more experience could weigh in and correct or corroborate this.

So any thought on this?

What I would like to see is a garbage transfer station. The ProtoLars and BI are simple enough to configure.

Dave could make an loader/unloader that gets loaded and unloaded that stays with the garbage train permanently, say one at each end.
I saw a documentary once about garbage....there is a garbage dump floating out at sea that is bigger than San Francisco or Los Angeles , plastic and anything you can think of...dead fish everywhere, they can't breath under that lot....
Not sure how they control viruses and stuff in real life on garbage trains.

(^) - That Facility Generates something like 50-100 Double Stack 53(? Might be 40s)Ft Well cars daily (I think the trend is more in summer). They ship it south, though where I don't know, I've heard Oregon or California somewhere. I have seen BNSF and UP both pulling them at times, so I think they have an active bidding process going on whether its the railroads themselves or just the Railroads being contracted to take XYZ Amount of Bought Garbage to wherever.... Generally I think it ends up being burnt, Buried, or Recycled.

Posted that in Dave's thread as well. I don't know about other facilities in other parts of the world, but that big building with the white roof as I understand it, is a Sorting and Container Loading Facility for the City. They have room for a Container Loader in there as well as a giant overhead crane of IDK what tonnage. Exactly how the process works, IDK. The smaller Building next to the Tracks with the Truck Ramp is a Garbage Truck Dump Facility. The big Truck Weigh station is for Full Size Semi's carrying in Containers on Trailers from outlaying transfer stations to be loaded at this facility.

I also know that the Containers they use are very similar current 40/53 Ft Containers, the bigger ones have End Platforms on the end with no doors and the tops are open with the ability to put a tarp/canvas over them (With the same kind of Rolling Mechanism you see on Dumptrucks for Load Control) on one side. The smaller ones are mostly old re-purposed 20Ft Containers with the Tops removed (Though looking at recent pics on Google shows some grey containers very similar to the ones Dave produced). They stack these 2 high on older well cars nobody seems to care about.

I for one would love to see some Garbage Industry stuff Modeled. Its actually a pretty prolific industry.

This from May, 2014 regarding garbage trains out of New Youk City.

http://www.democratandchronicle.com.../05/25/high-acres-landfill-nyc-trash/9545691/

As for industries that load empty containers and unload full ones, you need a garbage loading point (BI) in or near the city configured to unload the empty containers (DES is not the only one to have released garbage containers and cars that haul garbage containers). Then you need a (BI) site (landfill or transfer site) configured to unload the full containers.

As for full vs empty containers, you can, for example, clone Dave's container and set the mass to represent a full container loaded at the city site while also having a container set to the mass of an empty container at the landfill/transfer site to be reloaded onto the car for the return trip. Keep in mind that Dave's containers load as a 4 container set, not individually as with some of the other garbage container cars so set the mass numbers accordingly if having accurate weights are important to you.

I don't know of any industry (BI) that would actually place a container onto a car while simultaniously having it appear as load on the car while disappearing as a load on the forklift. It might be doable, but who knows. There are some assets where a fork/container lift moves containers/lumber/logs from one place and sets/stacks them in another, returning empty for another load. But, these do not actually load/place commodities onto the cars.

Nominal Tare vs Gross Wt (mass) of 20ft Hycube (9 1/2 ft Ht) Containers:

Tare = 4000kg
Gross Wt = 30500kg (car & load)

In the case of Dave's load (4 containers at a time) that would be:

Tare = 16000kg
Gross Wt = 122000kg

But, if you go with the Gross Wt mass above x 4 for a container load for Dave's car, you might need to either remove the max weight limit (currently around 92000kg) container of the of the spine car config file or increase it to 122000kg plus the mass of the car or you may have problems getting the loaded containers to load onto the car via a BI.

The day I start running trash trains, is the day I stop running Trainz.

An NYC garbage train actually made me puke, smelled like decomp corpses.

I buy food, and throw away bones, fat, and other inedible waste, I recycle metal and plastic ... Most people throw away over 50% of the food they buy ... I eat it all before it rots (that's why I'm so fat) :hehe: I cut a wafer thin sliver, off the base of my head of lettuce, slap on a saturated with water wad of paper towel, keep it wet every day, put it in a shopping plastic bag upside down ... keeps for 3 weeks ... most people throw lettuce out after 3 days.

In Antarctica every piece of waste is recycled back to the Country of origin, and garbage is either burned, or shipped out on cargo planes, there are no dumps in Antarctica

In a small map that I made sometimes ago, the main center of interest was a Recycling Center which offered a good choice of railcar switching such as gondolas loaded with bales of aluminium cans as input and aluminium slabs on bulkhead flatcars for output.

To the obvious operations of such a Center, I added an Ethanol Plant using the the Gasification Method, meaning ethanol production from non-recyclable garbage by transforming trash into synthgas and producing ethanol and methanol from this gas. A good description of the technique is available at "enerkem.com". In that scenario, I added an input of 75 Trash Trash Containers Spine Cars per week, from all around towns of the Center, and an output of 50 ethanol and/or methanol tankers per week.

At that time, I was using the "Trash Spine Cars" from Jointedrail, the "GIMX" ones if I remember correctly. I cloned the containers and renamed them "Empty Trash Container" and "Full Trash Container". I simply changed the names and the masses, estimating that a full container would add 10 tons to it's basic mass (I could not find statistics for this case). I modified the Icons by putting an "E" and a "F" over them, nothing more.

The buildings themselves were mainly assembled from TS12 built-in industrial assets. The full containers were changed for empty ones by using the "JR Multi Industry", shamelessly picked up from the Jointedrail "Midwest Grain" route but the "Multiple Industry New", an TS12 built-in asset, could have been used.

I know that it was not really ""prototypical", but it was the fun.

Our next module is centered around solid waste, scrap, and C&D. Most of the parts are complete and we're getting it onto a route now. We will have some new products we can make freeware.
