Frostbite Falls & Northern

I'm new to Trainz (Trainz for mac 3 months) I've been working on my route for over two months. It's more of an impression of the Great Northern /BNSF high line than any place in particular. I've renamed the route a number of times. Frostbite Falls & Northern is the name that stuck. After upgrading my video card and RAM my system's running smoothly but what happens if I add the thousand more trees my route needs? Here are some of my screen shots. It's a work in progress. images are 1280 x 800

That is awesome!!! Is that your first route? It is of the quality of some of the nicer routes around here, in my opinion. :D

Congratulations on an awesome route and awesome first post! :)

Great start on the route, it compares well to many other greats.. One tip would be to blend the hills into the backdrop.

A really good start. Looks a lot like Montana. I wouldn't add many more trees to your route, at least in the shots you've shown us. The Plains of Montana (eastern portion) are very sparsely wooded. That changes, of course, when you get to the Rocky Mountains though.

Route looks good man!

You ask about trees. As for a speedtreez go I've been working through an issue on my 80 mile route. I've been using all pofig's speedtreez and he has a lot of them. Through the process of adding trees and sorting through all of them to find one's I liked I might have added too many "types". Even though my route was running smooth as silk in very heavily wooded areas Trainz would freeze and lock up at times with no warning. I posted about the issue with a screen shot of my in driver performance stats. A forum member pointed out that I had too many speedtreez "types". They ranged anywhere from 15 to 45 depending where on the route you are and the draw distance. This same member also mentioned "instances" do not have the negative impact as the types. After a couple of days of using the replace asset tool I have got it down to no more than 20 "types" at any point on the route. Here's some screen shots to give you an idea of the trees. http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=78007

I've only been testing for a day but so far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed. Point being if this theory is correct you can have as many trees as you want but just limit the number of different types of trees.

Well I'll try this again. I was trying to post a reply and it just disappeared. Anyway thanks for all the positive comments on my layout. The hoppers are from Jointed Rail freeware and the boxcars by Euphod. I'm still trying to find my way around download station. Those boxcars were just what I was looking for as far as quality and road names available. The route right now is only 22 boards with a couple of small yards, some farms and other rural buildings. As an artist I'm sort of from the scenery first, operations second mindset. Now I'm getting a little better at track planning. One of the first things I created were the snow covered mountains. They are done in forced perspective so I'm still looking for some kind of off in the distance tree stands going up the lower sides of the mountains. I can't paint that detail with the crazy clone stamp texture tool. As far speed trees they do look good but I've been wondering when too many will affect the system. I still have a lot to learn but so far working with Trainz has been fun and way too addicting.

Dricketts,
Yeah I was looking at your Frisco pics last week. Very nice work! I'll try a test with adding a bunch of the same kind of speed trees in an area. Has anyone ever made a list of types of objects and the effect on system performance? such as grass and shrub splines, telegraph lines, buildings, animated objects. It makes me wonder when I read about those that even limit the number of different textures they use in an area on the ground.

Very very very nice route!! Any chance this would be available though Trainz12? I would love to see some engines with the log on them! haha
