Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad: Redux

It's been about 20 months, +-a month or two. A long haul, for sure!

Hi Dave,

I love your 'signature' banner.
Surely one of the best on the Trainz forums.

Wow there's some cool screen-shots here on this thread.
Excellent!.

:)

Are you going to finish off the Darjeeling steam collection with Class As & the 4-6-2s (i think that's it).

so its been a couple months... any progress?

I just remembered today that I still got to get that video I got to give you guys....

As a matter fact, yup. We have just three largish sections we are dealing with and now putting final touches on plus adding various sessions, trackmarks, and triggers. We just might hit our mark on the release date. If it is delayed, it won't be by much.

I cant wait for this, I may be a Colorado Narrow Gauger, but this route plus extras has me pretty worked up

I think one of the most prominent highlights are all the roads and track sections that Narrowgauge created for us. Every one of them allows us to hang both roads and track from very steep-sided hills. Most of the screen shots we have provided show these items clearly.

Plans are currently set to provide just the content necessary for the route itself. The rest of the unused content will also be available on our site for download. I do want to state clearly though that the content created for this route is definitely owned by the creator and, as such, is free to do what they will with it.

We all hope this route will meet everyone's expectations.

thought i'd mention something. Having not seen any recent pics or such this may been fixed. I was looking at your pics of the route and such and it all looked really real, except for the fact that they all seemed to be missing something and for the longest while I couldn't figure out what it was until recently;
People
India is crowed with people especially in the cities and towns. In said areas it is often very hard to look in any one direction and not see atleast one person. getting out of 'civilization' the numbers dwindle off but there are still people to be seen, street-side merchants, people who stopped on thier trip to find a tree, farmers out in their fields, etc.

I hope to see this project come through it would bring great joy to be able to open it up and go back to being in that wonderful country again (If people didn't know I lived in the hills of India for 6 months) Please keep us all updated with pics, news blurbs, movies, etc!

peter

Edit: ALso whats the URL to your guy's website, i can't seem to remember how i got their last time (you could put it in your sig too ;) )

I have been watching this project for a few months (since I found the website:cool:) and have been more and more amazed. You guys working on this are one group of extremely talented creators, and I'm sure I speak for everyone in saying that we appreciate your efforts! This is phenomenal!

DHR Project Progress

I don't know if you have seen this, but there was an article in Virtual Railroader about the route's progress in April. Here is the link to it:

http://www.virtualrailroader.com/R2D-1.html

David Drake has made a multitude figures, bikes, cars and other items for use on the route and the effect is amazing!

Hope this of of help.

The Look and Feel!

... People... India is crowed with people especially in the cities and towns.

As with all routes in Trainz, COMPROMISE is necessary. We will not be able to show you the thousands of people which inhabit the average Indian street. That being said, we will be trying to give a reasonable idea of the route and what it 'feel's' like to climb the foothills on the Toy Train. (It must also be remembered that the mountain towns and villages are not the huge cities of the flat lands. The normal crowding of the cities isn't found in the hill towns.) I am not one of the Scenery Dressers, since my skill lies elsewhere, but I feel quite confident that the atmosphere of India and verisimilitude to the actual route will be achieved. Which and how many of the available objects will be used is not known yet.

Here is a list of the 'people' type objects available for the route:
175 2D urban people
40 tea pickers
20 different bicycles and riders
5 different motorcycles and riders
13 motor scooters and riders
8 buses
12 jeeps
12 Land Rovers
50 different Trucks
Various other 'people items'

This link will take you to the Content page where the content we call 'Details' are listed. If you scroll down the page about half way you will begin to see the people stuff.

Dave

And, no matter how artfully created by Dave they are, the addition of "lots" of people to any scene adds polys. "Compromise", is the watchword here. We want to give you a stable route with the smallest amount of 'jitters' we can. If, when you download it, you find that you can add people yourself and still not hit a poly limit and start jittering, then by all means have a ball.

With the exception of the vehicles, most of the other 'populating' items are 2D and have to be placed with care so as to seem "real" when viewed as the train goes by. Any effect can be ruined if you pass by and the person seems to twist into a 3rd dimension before your eyes .

How much longer do you reckon the routes gonna take?

It truly is a shame there is no Indian steam in Trainz, apart from this of course. there should be more steam loco's in trainz from places like Inda, Zimbabwe even China.....

The problem with giving a precise completion date is that it gets welded into peoples minds and they start to get tetchy if the date is missed. The end is close, I can say with complete assurance that we are closer to the finish date than we are to the start date.

Be patient, it is a major project and we are only a small team.

It will be complete in 2008, I'm certain of that.

Your comment about the lack of steam engines from India and more easterly countries is a good one, the problem is twofold, there is no demand for them and information needed to build them is difficult to get.

Perhaps the DHR may create some interest, I hope so.

Cheers

Indian steam... just my sort-o-thing!

Hi narrowgauge, if you know about any indian steam loco drawings I would be glad to give it a try at building one(with my limited GMAX skills)... maybe one of those 5ft 6in gauge inside cylinder 0-6-0 or 4-4-0 ones to begin with, they are very well photographed, and the animation should be easier than most... Let me see, I think I'll go fire up GMAX and see what I can do!

Sam

EDIT: Could someone maybe whip up some 5ft 6in gauge track? I would appreciate it very much!

Go for it. It is always possible that a search on the 'Net may find something. Look for Indian train groups, there must be something like that. There are also DVDs available, showing the Indian trains, just a matter of searching.

The problem is that while a diesel is essentially only a box varying in shape and colour, a steam engine has much more exterior detail, and can easily appear distorted if the basic dimensions are not available.

Be prepared to make some false starts until you get the basic shape looking right and don't make things too 'heavy'.

I have no Indian loco drawings, I have been one-eyed about the DHR for the last two years.

Cheers

To me there has always been a demand for steam locos in Trainz like the locos from such countries, something like the 2-8-2 tender loco's from BCL copper mine in Botswana, I have come across some diagrams for theese such loco's on the internet, but they arent a really good quality......

But I would like to see myself in the future toilling away on a locomotive like this, or an Indian XP or perhaps even a WP......
Right now I am working on my first locomotive, a Stephensons valve gear PB15 of the Queensland Railways, working from a diagram in a book (not in the programe) using a compass set and a ruler.

What would be good is a South African Beyer Peacock 4-8-2 tender loco.
It is really a shame that there arent any of theese loco's in trainz.

Actually, technically, I allready have the diagram for a WD, beacause during the war there was so many extra trains to run transporting troops and What-not, Baldwin of Philidelphia came up with a set of plans for a type of locomotive which could be used on Metre gauge, 3' 6'' Gauge, and a whole heap of others. They became known around the pacific - Asia reigon as the MacArthur's, beacause of the Americain General that was based in Brisbane during the pacific theatre of war. One batch was sent to the Philipines, a few sent to India (which became the WD class), Burma, Mylasia, Taihland, and a few sent to Queensland in Australia, so the only few diferences in the diagram that I have here and the ones in India of the WD's should be the Gauge, and the tender (when we first got them the original tenders kept bouncing off the tracks beacause they were fitted with Ride control Bogies, so we replaced them).
A bloke by the username of dreddman is making the Queensland version of it, we call them the AC16 type, A beacause it is american, C beacause it has 4 driving axles, and 16 beacause that it the Diameter of the piston cylinder. He is not far from finishing it I dont think......

By the way found some diagrams at www.beyerpeacock.co.uk.
