Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad: Redux

Franklin_Prestage

DHR Chief Engineer
Greetings all. I am very happy to inform you that progress on the virtual recreation of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad has been steadily marching along in spite of the nasty weather in the previous weeks. I offer these images so that you may enjoy them to the fullest.

Primarily, they were taken from areas previously not reported in this forum. Our engineer at Sukna has been hard at work and has included two of his favorites. The Works at Tindharia are aptly represented by two very nice shots and three have been included from the Paglajhora area which, as you can see, is heavily fogged today.

The Druk Monestary is shown in near and far perspective as well as a distant shot of Darjeeling itself and a representative shot of generic hillside.

So, my friends, please enjoy these as we work hard to complete this difficult route for your enjoyment.

Respectfully,

Franklin Prestage

A K1 Garratt? Beautiful! :D

Oh, and the route is very nice as well. A must have when it's done.

Cheers,
John

Shoot what an amazing job, thanks for sharing these 'so far in progress' screenies. In The Netherlands they have broadcasted a tv serial called Rail Away in which 2 episodes were about this railroad some years ago. It's realy amazing how smal and crowded/busy the area is where these trains have to do their job.
I sure hope you're able to release this 'cos I'm 1 of the first downloaders,

regards,

Very nice shots Franklin:) :) You and your team are doing a brilliant job on this route:) Will download when it's released.

This route will be all freeware. No strings attached. We will host it on our own site and every piece of content is either built-in to 2004 or created by our fine craftsmen specifically for the DHR - nothing from the DLS.

The Garratt, which was beautifully made by Ben Neal especially for the route, is not a K1. K1 and K2 were made for Tasmania, the one shown was made for the DHR in 1911 and is thought to be the third Garratt made.

It was hoped that it could be used to handle double length trains up the hill. It was not a success, it used more fuel per mile than two B class locs and, although it had sufficient power, it used to drag the leading coaches off the track on some of the sharp hill curves.

We are lucky, we can use it as it was intended without derailments.

It spent most of its life on the longer lines on the plains on DHR sections that are now long gone and we will not be modelling.

Although we are making the route for TRS2004, it will be tested and made suitable for TRS2006. We chose TRS2004 for several reasons, TRS2006 is not an easy program for content creation, and we are hoping that by the time we finish, TRS2004 will be released and used in India. Currently India has UTC available.

To make it clearer, as Bill said we will use nothing that requires a visit to the DLS, and this also means that nothing we use will be on the DLS. Everything we use will be built-in to TRS2004 or supplied from our web site. If we use any third-party assets will supply those from our web site provided that we have the creators permission. So far we have not used any third-party assets.

To give you an idea what has been made so far, Dave, (dmdrake) has made well over 1500 buildings, scenic items and ground textures, there are many others made by other group members, we have over 150 road modules representing all the changes in the Cart Road , and over 11 track types.

The locomotives and rolling stock are all made from DHR designs.

Nothing will be released until the route is complete. Visit us at http://darjeelingtrainz.com and see what we have.

I must qualify my statement above. Any DHR group creator is free to put their content on the DLS as well, that will be their choice. The only restriction is that they do not do that until the route is released.

Cheers

Exactly what Bill means

I hope you mean that there is nothing else is on the DLS used by this route, and you don't mean that none of the stuff your making is on the DLS.

"This route will be all freeware. No strings attached. We will host it on our own site and every piece of content is either built-in to 2004 or created by our fine craftsmen specifically for the DHR - nothing from the DLS."

Bill means that the content of the route will include only 2 sources, built in TRS2004 content and content we have created. No other third party content will be involved, so far.
