bendorsey - I'm (finally) back

I know how you feel Ben. I've looked at Blender and Gimp and both I find alien to my DOS/GEM/Windows background. I feel they both come from the Unix/Linux school of thought, which again I find alien to my old mind.

Both were Linux applications originally and still are and many found them confusing in Linux, I did! Plenty of other Linux apps that work in a similar way to Windows ones without having to fight with those two!

Hi John:

It makes no sense to me why programs are set up to be incomprehensible when you look at them. What is the purpose of using labeling and naming conventions that do not tell you what they do? Plus Blenders choice of black letters on a medium to dark grey background isn't easy to read at my age (72).

Some programming languages aren't much better. What does "my soup" mean?:hehe:

Nuff grouching - I got (pure) Gmax to work (not via TACS) so I'm back in business there.

Hi Mick:

I've looked at Blender half a dozen times and it always comes up pure gibberish to me. It is almost certainly better then Gmax but it isn't logically set up. Nothing is labeled in a manner that intuitively gives you some idea as to what it is and what it does. Plus I'm too darn old and set in my ways to try and learn another headache inducing 3D graphics program.

One final thought (which I don't think most folks consider). After 10 years with Gmax - switching to Blender isn't just a matter of learning Blender - its also a matter of un-learning Gmax. Every time I would look at something in Blender I would automatically think in Gmax terms and that won't work worth a hoot.

Hi Ben.
I'll just say this and then I'll leave you alone
Did you look at version 2.5 and up, previous versions I would agree with you, one of the worst interfaces I've ever seen. Post 2.5 one of the best.
I always thought you were a youngster, but I took a look at your profile..........

Hi Ish:

You will get a kick out of this. Like most folks I get windows updates automatically. It downloads them when I turn the computer off in the evening and installs them when I turn it back on in the morning. Last night it said "please do not turn your computer off - downloading 197 updates". GADZOOKS! Took over an hour this morning. I knew I would get a fair batch but not that many. OK - my windows disk was 5 years old so perhaps not as unexpected after all.

Ben

Hello Dear Ben --

Thanks for the big text since I am partially blind through my right eye! Much better to read, good buddy!

Yep, I've been there myself -- Sometimes when you know that the pc needs to turn on so it can do its' updates we forget, and only remember when we need to go on ... LOL ...

Hopefully, it goes smoothly -- Good Luck, and glad to read your are settling it nicely!

You take care now, and drink that tea!!!
