Hi Ya'll:

Just got my system back up and running. A lot has changed so it will be a few days befor I get my feeble brain wrapped around a new e-mail system.

I managed to lose my old e-mail address list (among a lot of other things) so those of you I had things ongoing will need to send me your e-mail addess via PM.

Hopefuilly I can get back to normal (whatever that is) in a week or so.

Great to be back - haven't touched Gmax or Trainz in 2 months (pure HELL).

Ben

I haven't used my EMail in weeks, and months ... Free Skype is instant communication ... as opposed to EMail, that is as antiquated as using smoke signals, or jungle drums, as a communication device.

With Free Skype sending a CDP, a file, or a photo, is as easy as click & drop it right into the typing dialog box, and share screens, and free videophone calls are ... Well ... FREE !

Thanks guys:

I had to re-install windows and nothing works like it used to (when it works at all). I can't even figure out to get to my e-mail stuff.

I downloaded Gmax and installed it but it keeps asking me to register it with turbosquid (something I never had to do before) and I can't get that to work either.

Welcome back Ben,

Gmax registration, if you can't get it to work not surprising as most can't get it to work these days, see the Turbosquid Gmax forum for a workround, scroll down a bit and use the orange here link. http://www.turbosquid.com/Forum/Index.cfm/stgAct/PostList/intThreadID/15975 nothing dangerous just a couple of registry entries which I suggest you save for future use, I think Turbosquid have pretty much given up on GMAX.

Thanks Clam:

That got me past the registraton part but now I get a fatal error:
Interactive 3D renderer failed. Check device settings using the H command line option (whatever that is).

I tried all 3 options (open-gl, ect).

This entire move from Florida to Tennessee has been a mess right from the start.
1. The move cost 3 times what I thought ($800 alone for diesel).
2. Couldn't even open a checking or savings account untill we both had TN drivers licenses.
3. Wife couldn't pass the vision test and had to get new glasses and contacts. $760 worth (she is legally blind without them - can't see farther then about 6 inches).
4. Had thought I could setup my computer and at least make things via Gmax and test in Trainz for the 6 to 8 weeks I would be off line but didn't happen.
I turned my computer off, waited a few minutes for any capacitors to discharge in the power supply, unplugged it, wrapped it in a heavy blanket, carefully put it in our GMC conversion van for the trip, about 10 days later (after we got into the little rental place while we looked for a house to buy), reconnected the bare bones system (computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse), and turned it on. NADA!!! It couldn't even find the boot partition.
After about a week fiddling with this-n-that I called the Alienware help desk. According to them if you leave the computer unplugged from the wall for more then 4 or 5 days an internal battery runs down and and effectivly renders the machine inoperative. Thats gotta be total BS since it would mean they could never ship a new one to a remote and difficult to get to location. Weren't very interested at all once I mentioned it was 5 years old (and out of warrenty).
I finally bit the bullet and re-installed windows which got the computer running (sort of) but natch all my programs and stuff were gone. I did lose a little Gmax/Trainz stuff but quite minimal as I back up everything on 3 external hard drives.
5. AT&T gent was by yesterday and got our telephone (landline) and U-verse DLS hooked up - hence this forum thread. TV guy will be here Tuesday to connect that. Haven't seen TV in 2 months. I didn't even know who won the world series until about 10 days ago (really).
6. At the moment I can't figure out where to access e-mail, have lost all my e-mail addresses, have no firewall that I know of (I use McAfee), can't get Gmax to work, have to reinstall TRS2004, 2006, 2010, 2012, and T:ANE then re-install all the hot fixes and service packs (SP1 - o-joy, lol). Looks like I have about a dozen PM's pending - some from close to 2 months ago so those are gonna have to wait untill I can get all the above mess straightened out. I was going to buy a new computer after new years but might have to bump that up a bit. Don't wanna but might hafta (and I'd be lying like a rug if I said I wouldn't really like to have a new one, lol).

On the good side we did find a nice little house (2000 sq ft - 3 bdrm - 2 bth) - oversized 2 car garage) in a nice neighborhood close to everything. Less then half the size of what we had in Florida (4800 sq ft - 8 bdrm 3 bth). Everything is incredibly cheaper up here. Home owners ins is about $560 a year - was $3200 in FL. Property taxes $1000 compared to $3700. Gas far less - I've seen it as low as $1.71 a gal. Sales tax is higher tho (9.5% compared to 7.0% in FL).

O-well - - - back to banging my head against the computer wall (trying to get anything to work).

Send me a list of questions and I'll try my best to answer whatever problems you have.

Can probably talk on the phone later today if that'd help too.

I have a few ideas.

Hi Robbie:

Thanks for the offer of help (I need all i can get, lol). I'm reasonably conversant with Gmax but internal (make that infernal) interior computer stuff is greek to me.

I'd think my prioritiy has to be:
1. Figuring out where my e-mail stuff is. When I click on the little windows internet explorer icon in the lower left corner of the screen it sends me to google. Thats not how I used to do email. It has an e-mail thing but won't accept mt username and password. As far as I can remember I did e-mail through AT&T but I don't see how to switch from google to AT&T.
2. Getting Gmax to work.
3. Installing TS2012 and T:ANE then all the hotfixes and service packs (I'm not going to bother installing TS2006 or TS2010). T:ANE will access them for me but where are the ones for TS2012?

Can't even drink beer and watch football today. No TV and the doctor said no more booze for youze (bummer).

Ben

If Gmax isn't playing check the Gmax.ini for GFXDevice= and change it to GGFXDevice=Direct3D may get it working that's both gmax.ini's the one in the Gmax folder and the one in the gamepacks\Trainz folder if you use it. I tried setting it up from openGL and it didn't and refused to work in Direct3d or that heidi thing until I manually changed the entry.

Alienware = Dell = not a lot of help unless you are buying something from them!

AT&T email I think should be here? https://websitesmail.att.com/

Hello Ben,

Good to see you back.

About your email - I think you are using webmail from AT & T - perhaps try this link https://websitesmail.att.com/

For the service packs and Hotfixes TS2012 - see http://www.auran.com/servicepacks/

Best regards

Kurt

Hi Clam:

Tried it with no luck. Haven't downloaded the gamepack thing as yet since I don't offhand remember where to get it.

Hi Kurt:

Downloaded all 4 (takes a lot longer to install them then download them if I remember correctly).

I can get to my att e-mail thing and surprisingly all my old e-mail contact addresses are still there. What I can't do is make windows internet explorer take me there rather then to google which I never used for email.

I did make a little progress - got my printer working.

Ben

You guys will love this:

I figured out how to switch from google to AT&T for my e-mail and all that but when I go to log in to check my e-mail it won't take my username and password. So I tried using the thing that lets you find that info out and it sends it to an e-mail WHICH I CAN'T ACCESS.

Ye olde rock and a hard place, lol.

To err is human - takes a computer to really screw up.

Ben

One should never use their ISP provider as an EMail source, as when you move, or change ISP providers your EMail goes PooF ! And so does any communication between N3V, and you, which stops any re-installation of Trainz, as your EMail address has changed
