Backing up route too large for CDP

Hi,

I have always made backup copies of my routes by exporting to CDP from Content Manager but now I have converted to HD Terrain and done a lot of landscaping then my route is too large for a CDP file. What is the best way of backing up such routes? Would opening up the editing folder in Windows Explorer and copying the KUID folder to my other internal HDD where I keep backups work? I obviously want to reduce the risk of losing anything.

Kind regards,

Gary

In theory that should work (but the old adage about the difference between theory and practice applies here). If you have to load the backup into Trainz you would need to use the Import Content Folder option in CM instead of the Import Content Files option.

I would run a test first after saving your route with a different name so you have two copies, the original and the test version. Save the KUID folder of the test route to your backup device then delete the test route. Then try importing the folder into CM.

You may also copy the .tzarc file.
It's not that easy

If you plan to backup the kuid xxxxxx xxxxxx or kuid2 xxxxxx xxxxxx .tzarc file make sure that you backup the folder it's located in
Example Local/hash-xx folder

Ideally create a new folder called 'My Route' then create a new folder inside My Route folder and call that the hash-xx, where 'XX' represents the hash folder number. Then copy either the kuid xxxxxx xxxxxx or kuid2 xxxxxx xxxxxx .tzarc file and paste into My Route/hash-xx folder

I think it just makes sense, because you just can't randomly install .tzarc files into either Local, Original or Packages folder.. These are organised for a reason, that's what I'm trying to get at and who knows after installing the tzarc file via 'Database Rebuild' since that's the only way to install .tzarc files, as far as I know?! Your route may appear as Unknown Location in Content Manager if you chose to randomly install it into either Local, Original or Packages folder without using it's hash-xx folder path that it should be located in..

Let's face it, you don't want to install a payware asset .tzarc inside the Local or Original folders, as I stated above it's organised for a reason.
I would suggest the idea as @pware has originally suggested

This is the way I do it and have had no problems so far.

This is the officially recommended method for backups: https://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki...for_transferring_a_large_amount_of_content.29
I've used this method a bunch of times. After copying, I compress this folder with a 7-zip archiver and this reduces the size by about 3 times.
If I need to check the sessions for this route, then before importing route folder, I change the randomly generated kuid to the original one in order to check the original sessions with the edited route.

That works fine. I've imported routes that way. The folder can also be dragged and dropped on to a Content Manager window.

Note that the Trainz Wiki says (here): "cdp files should not be made larger than 500MB in size, so as to ensure that the file does not become corrupted and can be imported successfully by Trainz. This method is recommended for transferring smaller numbers of assets, or individual assets."

Thanks all for your suggestions, I successfully saved a copy of my route and session then copied them to my temp backup drive, deleted them in CM and then re-imported using Import Content Folder. Both route and session work fine. Hopefully N3V will introduce a simpler method, such as larger CDP files, in future.

Kind regards,

Gary
