Article: Trainz Community Edition - Round 2

I am a little curious, is N3V writing the software for TANE to support Window 8, or are they lagging behind as to operating systems as usual? And no, I am using windows 7 at the moment, although I have got win 8 stashed away in a box somewhere.

Good Morning Jasher
We fully support Trainz: A New Era with Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1

Note, we generally require the latest updates be installed, and as such you may need 8.1 installed (this is not yet confirmed).

Please note, we do not support Trainz running in Parallels on Mac, nor do we test this. If you wish to use Trainz on a Mac, then you will need to use the Mac version.

I don't know if this is the right place for my comment or not but in todays kickstarter up date email, the smoke from the steam loco pictured, was going straight up.
One of my friends who has installed the Community edition says that the steam loco smoke in that edition is a 'disaster' and , goes all over the place, doesn't fall back over the train, doesn't come out from the correct point, goes straight up and doesn't perform at all like it does in TS12 and TS10.
When trying the pre BETA version, I had a major PC crash , completely wiping my HD etc so I'm not going to test it myself by putting on any of these 'interim' versions but wait until I get my boxed set. I only run steam engines and they must look and run realistically is there a problem with the smoke as described or will it all be fixed for the final release?

Hi Nimec
There are some issues with collision boxes in the Community Edition, which can cause this. This isn't so much an issue with the smoke, as an issue with what it's colliding with. Essentially, as everything currently uses a simple 'bounding box' (imagine an invisible box that is formed by the outer extremes, in every direction, of a particular model), in some cases the smoke effects are being located 'within' them on a loco, causing some odd effects. This is definitely something that we are working on, however it may also require changes to content to improve it (this is being determined as we complete these functions in Trainz).

For the screenshots on kickstarter, the loco is stationary in them, so the smoke is going straight up. The smoke is much the same as on the NKP Berkshire loco DLC, however we have made some improvements to it. These ones definitely have a stronger exhaust, giving a lot more height to the smoke before it drifts back (depending on speed of course). Different locos also have different smoke effects, so the look will vary of course. However, it should appear very similar (if not the same) as in TS12 in the full release.

Welcome to the forums.

Which version of WinRAR are you using? It needs to be a 64-bit version in order to extract the archive.

Also, if you are getting that many checksum errors, then something is wrong with your download.

I am using winrar 5.20 64 Bit and my downloads are just today without errors. But is there any other way to download the direct setup file?

Unfortunately not - at this stage, it's only in the form of the large .zip file, which contains the setup file and around 5-6 .bin files. If you contact N3V's Helpdesk though, they may be able to assist.

However, if what I've gathered is correct, the next few updates are due to appear as smaller patches (unless you have opted for the digital download version, then you may get one final large download).

The problem was solved. I have downloaded winrar 5.21 64 Bit Beta and all works perfectly, also the installation.
Thanks for your help.

The program (build 74539) installed fine, works fine, hangs up and starts a rebuild of the database. But then it gets stuck at "Scanning for added asset files (0 asset folders scanned)".

Also, in surveyor I have had the problem of creating different elevations. The program is not hung, but the elevation tool doesn't do anything.

Are these "known" issues?

The first one is - workaround is to delete the contents of the cache/internet folder in the location where T:ANE is storing your content (default is %localappdata%/N3V Games/TANE/buildxxxxx - check the .txt file in the TANE folder to see which one applies).

As for the second one, I'm not sure on that one, although I would suggest making sure the route layer is not locked.

Another question: why does it take so long for TANE.exe to vacate the memory? When I open the task manager it seems to stick around for quite some time. Sometimes I see 2 instances of TANE.exe at different memory usages.

I really like the improvements of TANE. It seems to run very smoothly, without any major hick-ups. HOWEVER........Wouldn't it be nice if you could just import the Tainz 12 content, such as routes that I made and other 2nd party content, and it works without any problems. Unfortunately that is NOT the case. Most of the content shows up as faulty with varying errors. The following errors (in this case for the MFM Open farm gate)being the most common:
! This asset uses an obsolete trainz-build number. Trainz-build numbers below 2.9 are no longer supported.
- binary texture file 'driftwd.texture' is not a texture file for 'arc:fld:$(local)/hash-55||kuid2 50567 27006 1.tzarc|'
- Texture 'driftwd.texture' is missing or could not be loaded in mesh 'farmgateopen.im', material '*farmgateopen*C9085FD5*material #1 gate*m.onetex'.
- binary texture file 'plateox2.texture' is not a texture file for 'arc:fld:$(local)/hash-55||kuid2 50567 27006 1.tzarc|'
- Texture 'plateox2.texture' is missing or could not be loaded in mesh 'farmgateopen.im', material '*farmgateopen*62E3AC35*material #6*m.onetex'.
- binary texture file 'wires-wires.texture' is not a texture file for 'arc:fld:$(local)/hash-55||kuid2 50567 27006 1.tzarc|'
- Texture 'wires-wires.texture' is missing or could not be loaded in mesh 'farmgateopen.im', material '*farmgateopen*3538EA8B*material #5*m.onetex'.
! Required container 'thumbnails' is missing.
! The *.texture.txt file is missing for texture resource 'driftwd.texture'.
! The *.texture.txt file is missing for texture resource 'plateox2.texture'.
! The *.texture.txt file is missing for texture resource 'wires-wires.texture'.
! The low-detail meshes total more than 500 polygons. This may have a negative impact on performance.

To me it spells A LOT OF WORK:'(:(:confused:
The excellent software from PEVSOFT will work, I'm sure, but it is not nicely integrated with CM. That is a negative!

There, I just had to vent my frustration!

To be honest with you, I cannot see N3V integrating PEV's tools into T:ANE at this stage.

If you're trying to import TS12 built-in content, I would strongly advise that you download the assets in question from the Download Station.

Sorry for another post. Here is another one:

! This asset uses an obsolete trainz-build number. Trainz-build numbers below 2.9 are no longer supported.
! Indexed meshes are not supported for traincars as of trainz-build 3.8. It is recommended that you upgrade 'mddm_body/mddm_night.im' to a LOD mesh.

How do I go about changing to an LOD mesh?

That would not be something you can do - only the creator can do that. Anyway, it's likely to only be a warning at this stage.
