Anyone here using linux?

Tried to run it via VirtualBox on Mac OS X and Ubuntu 9.04 with no success but both systems have been tweaked and therefore test are not attendable. I'm going to reset both systems to standard conditions, reinstall VB/Win and retry.
As I already said in other topics it works fine (2009) if you maintain low scenario complexity in Parallels 2009 therefore why shouldn't it work in Virtualbox which has OpenGL working fine since long time? Of course you may need an original Windows license.
If it has problems I'll try to contact Trainz and/or Virtualbox developers, next week when I have my hands back on my iMac next week.
For me, in VBox or any other virtualizer, is not a bad idea although 3D performance are not at max. Let's also consider that fure versions of virtualizer may contain a "1st type" Hypervisor which will allow direct access to the whole hardware. Parallels is formally on the way. Don't know nothing about VMware and VBox but the roadmap should be similar for market reasons.

Hi

Honestly, I don't think you will have much success in Virtual Box or VMWare,
although these emulators are superb for a lot of applications, they have to decompress a hard drive image file, and the impact on performance is just too much to run Trainz effectively.

If you are running Ubuntu install WINE and then TRS2009, apart from CM 2.0 it will run out of the box (You may need the regedit fix for the fonts)

Don't know anything about MAC so can't help here. try Ubuntu, and if you've any problems, I will try and help.

They're not much different than Parallals which works fine. Just need to verify OGL or DirectX compatibility.

When running a virtualizer the host OS is a marginal problem especially if it's Mac OS X where drivers are strictly optimized for the underlying HW.

I'll let you people know.

IMHO running a complex app is better on a complete Win installation in a virtualizer than in a reversed engineering Win framework such as Wine.

Though I'm happy to know that TS2009 works fine on Wine in Ubuntu. My only problem is how to get Wine (a free version) working on a Mac. Never had luck with it.

when i try to start trainz under wine i get errors that mention quartz.dll and then trainz crashes
does anyone know a fix for this?

On the Mac platform a few extra libraries must be installed in order to have better compatibility, quartz is one of these; should be the same with Linux. Refer to Wiki for install instructions. Also try PlayOnLinux which relies on latest releases of Wine. Trainz is not officially supporter but you can still tryout it. If you do, please report me any error and i'll try to build the correct Wine APIs database in order to have it working. Mostly is a matter of fonts.

Here's an update: I've been able to run TS2009 on a Mac with Wine 1.1.12 through Crossover Games (otherwise should have been too much complex to install and configure the stantard Wine release). There's a similar product for Linux: PlayOnLinux which also relies on Wine and has a GU Interface as Crossover. Try it although there's a drawback: Content Manager crashes at startup so if you need to reset the database you have to find out another way; personally I do it through Win XP in Virtualbox.
There are a few glitches you may also find in POL: you must set the emulator to run in a specific sized window (such as 1280x960, in my case - Graphic Preferences).
A second glitch is that whneverI launch TS2009 I have an error message: fortunately there's a button named "Launch Trainz", I just click on it and it works very fine. This may no happen with Play On Linux but take care of my advices.
Another solution could be VMware's virtualizer (in my case is slower than Crossover) or Parallels 4 which is my preferred choice although a bit more complex in term of resources needed from the hos OS. By the way, all mentioned apps except VBox and PlayOnLinux are not free of charge.
But both Parallels 4 and Crossover Games work fine but all in DirectX mode, same as VMwsare's Fusion. In a few words: regardless the default setting for TS2009 is OpenGL I could be able to run it only in DirectX mode Wine and Co. are only DirectX mode).

Linux

Have been running TS2009 on Ubuntu for sometime now on Wine 1.0.1
The only issues I have is that CM 2.0 does not work, and sound still disappears after a while. Everything else runs flawlessly out of the box, and with better frame rates than Windows.

The sound problem seems to be better when run in windowed mode, but it just a delay, it still disappears eventually.

CM 2.0 is a .NET program and although .NET 2.0 can be installed into WINE, I don't think it functions properly.

Previous versions of CMP work OK so it looks as if .NET 1.1 is better supported.

trainz wine

i have managed to get trs2006 working in wine but it doesnt run very smoothly
does anyone know a fix for this?
i will try play on linux

Try using opengl if you are currently using directx or vice versa.
On my system DirectX gives a slide show whilst opengl runs very smooth.
On TRS2006 you may see some Texture faults with opengl, but most of these are in loco cabs and I can live with that.

Issues

I wonder if anybody can help.
I installed TRS2006 a while back on Ubuntu 9.04 under WINE. It didn't work. Then I read this forum, changed the setting from DirectX to OpenGL, and found that it didn't crash on startup. However, all the writing has disappeared.
Also, I can't import CDPs into CMP or download things from the download station.
Cheers.

Wine Fix

Hi
Have a look on the Wine Apps Database for TRS2006. There is a fix for the missing fonts. Basically it involves adding a key to the registry.
Full instructions are there, and you should find that CMP works OK too.

Anyone having look with 2010 on Ubuntu Lucid?

I have recently decided to remove Windows not only from my laptop... but from my life (except the media box attached to my TV and Stereo but only due to my desire to stream netflix.)

Vista and I had our last falling out. I had to execute Vista via the use of the almighty zero. I have been an Ubuntu (Linux) user for some time, duel booting. I have now been using Ubuntu (Linux) for some time now and miss Trainz.

I recently attempted to install 2010 via Wine but had an issue with the downloaded version of Trainz 2010. Although, it might just be that the files were corrupted during download.

Further examination exposed that the files I downloaded did not match the correct size listed on the website. So it appears I need to attempt to download these files again. Not sure what went wrong.

Got Trainz 2010 installed via wine. It is currently Updating the Trainz Asset Database. It seems to be taking a while but it is making progress.

Using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04) and Wine 1.3.1 I have Trainz 2010 running. No major issues... looks decent. Some performance issues that I will work to resolve. CM3.2 may not work, but I am going to play around a bit before I say that for sure.

Could you please keep this one updated, my son has tried to ween me off Windows, but I miss Trainz 2010 and would be grateful for any feedback to have it up and running again.

I can open it... and it appears to log in to the server. It is REALLY slow, however.. I think it MIGHT work, but really really really slowly. I am talking, wait a few minutes before operations slow. ;(

Anyone else here use any form of linux?
Over the last six months I've had Linux Ubuntu 10.04, Linux Mint 9, KDE, Xfce and Open SUSE 11.3 32 and 64-bit versions running on three different systems including the i7 975X setup listed below.

I'm currently using the 64-bit version of the new Ubuntu 10.10 beta on a Core 2 quad (Q9650)/8800 GTX/4GB 1600 DDR3 setup. So far from what I've seen of Ubuntu 10.10 it's going to be a winner.

I've only run X-Plane and OpenBVE on Linux (without the use of Wine) so I can't comment on how Trainz performs. One thing I did notice in the new Ubuntu 10.10 is that OpenBVE is listed in the “Software Center” under “games” and provides a very easy way to install it. Using the Software Center it took about 3 minutes to download and install and this included the Birmingham Cross-City South route from RailSimRoutesUk.
