new computer -abysmal performance

Are you using your sagebrush assets? I ran into a couple the other day that have issues loading and caused an awful redraw, track and terrain issue.

<kuid:44878:115219> DG uintah rwy JVC reskin:sagebrush 9 no 2 for sage group 2

There's another asset with a similar name that also caused the problem.

I discovered the problem on NARM's GILA route. This was my solution.

I sadly didn't send you a message. I got involved in a non-Trainz project and totally forgot about it.
Yes I have found that some of these are VERY inefficient, Malc Jenkins helped with the creation of the initial set, they seemed to be ok in TANE and 2019, in 2022 some of them really seem to cause issues, i have used some near the track and Ive used billboard sages futher away to give the feel of sage without the GPU hit. Montanawestern contacted me and said he is going to try and update these and hopefully make them more efficient. Wonder if creating a library might be a better way to use them ? I'll check your solution out now.
However I have tweaked my gpu using the nvidia app as suggested, which improved things. today I removed large areas of pbr textures and substituted conventional ones. .
Finally i changed my settings. i noticed that when the draw distance went down to 3000, the rendering stopped being an issue, so i compromised, changed it to 8000, selected process objects behind camera and the draw issues have ceased for track and most other assets !!!!!. scenery is at normal settings.
So far it seems to work ok.

Don't know if it is relevant but I've had some odd issues with Windows 11 recently and I keep it up to date. Today, I had two Windows updates in one day so I'm a tad suspicious. Haven't let Windows do the second one yet.

Things has slowed down occasionally and I sometimes have some odd flashing like rendering in the taskbar. Then app windows don't want to stay on screen and minimise themselves to the taskbar.

I've only had one and the units been turned on all day. had a time where I didn't seem to get any for weeks , which worried me a tad. My installs been ok so far, nothing like you describe.

Also found a potential fix for the sages , by applying lod code to the config file the triangle count went down form in the millions in performance analysis to a peak of 96,000, hopefully this will make all of these more efficient , I am going to update them all this week .

I also think I know why my computer was struggling , when I set graphics on install , I think I chose medium settings. I tried to set up an older 2022 install yesterday which meant a new setup of the graphics card level used in trainz, this time, I chose low. The older version ( as i thought ) would not open the route but when i went back to 2022pe, it told me there was a change that required a game start, yet, id no made any changes, i am presuming that trainz in general is now using the lower setting and this this is why the computer is performing more efficiently

I think shadows are a performance killer. While shadows can look realistic I think most wouldn't notice if they weren't there at all.

It's a bit like LOD changes. I only notice them when I am actually testing to see if a user could see a LOD "pop" on one of my models. Some years ago I concluded it was most noticeable if the material was swapped for a low poly boxy mesh - say for a loco. It's quite amazing how a really ugly looking low poly mesh can look quite good at around 1000 metres.

Shadows can cause a performance hit. I run them at low or medium and they render fine on my system with 8000 m draw distance. With all the trees and other objects blocking the view, there's no reason to set my draw distance any further.

The problem I think is the game engine applies shadows to assets that are out in the distance instead of keeping the shadows within close proximity, let's say a couple of baseboards around the user's view, for example. Needless rendering of shadows 22 km away is not very efficient and I'm sure it will have a huge impact on the system.
