GPU temp/fan speeds using TRS22

I've searched unsuccessfully for an answer to my issue here, but apologies if it has already been answered.

I've recently moved my PC to Windows 11 and although I had no issues initially, once I upgraded my CPU and changed the stock cooler to a tower, things started to go wrong. The most recent thing is the GPU is up the left.

I'm using a GeForce GTX 970. Without TRS22 running, it sits at 35-40 degrees C with little to no GPU utilisation.

As soon as I open TRS22 and go to the home screen, the temperature shoots up to 80 degrees C, GPU utilisation hits 75% and the fans run at max.

So far I've put the original CPU in, reinstalled the stock cooler, reset the PC, re-seated the graphics card, and updated the driver. The issue remains.

If anyone has any further ideas, I'm all ears with thanks.

It's TRS22 and family sucking the life out of your graphics card. Don't feel left out because it does the same with my RTX3080. The reason is in addition to the fancy graphics, a lot of the more recent scripting is done using the GPU which is much faster.

To help with the heat I use MSI Afterburner.

This application will allow you to control your graphics card fans and other features. It's meant for overclocking but I found a better use for it instead. I set up a custom fan curve so that the fans speed up sooner when I use TRS-Plus and get ahead of the heat and I've also recently reduced the Power Limit to 85% with no discernable difference in performance. This doesn't cool the card down 100% but it keeps the card well below the 83C limit which will cause the video card to throttle down causing stuttering and performance problems.

my 6000 Series MSI Card doesn't even get that hot it sits in the low 40's - 50 Degree Centigrade and its all updated like it should plus i have 4 other cooling fans in the case as well to Cool the card and CPU down... my GPU is also Kept Very clean as well and if you clean your computer Every Two Weeks to keep the dust down...

I'm not sure it's just the fans in this case. The TRS22 splash screen which shows a loco of your choice sends the fans and GPU temp soaring. I'm going to put some new thermal paste on the GPU but there's something else going on here I think.

I will try Afterburner though once I've change the paste.

Hi,
I'd suggest lowering the graphics quality - the TS22 descriptions are 1 level higher than the TS19 ones - even though they have the same name....

try limiting the framerate trainz is running at- I had to cap mine at my monitor refresh rate of 74hz otherwise my GPU would spool up trying to give me 300fps on a blank baseboard route...

Thanks ColPrice,

I've tried that but I don't think this should be an issue on the splash screen.

Thanks Therock.

I'm not even getting as far as routes. This happens on the home/splash screen where I get the options of what I want to do and an image of a loco/carriage/wagon appears in the background. That shouldn't be causing a massive load.

Ok, try changing the default loading screen - you can select a different image. It’s also possible the the gpu is working herd for the start-up screen pre-caching…

An observation that I have made is that when running the same route and session in both Trainz Plus and TRS22PE it appears (a subjective assessment only) to run cooler (with less fan noise) in TRS22PE.

My RTX 3080 always ran very hot. New RTX 4080 runs immensely cooler.

The "splash screen" is a route not an image. So your computer is going to react the same as any other route. It just has a fixed camera view. You can open it in Surveyor and explore to see that it is very detailed. The name is TRS22 Main Menu Route.

Here is a very convenient page for comparing the performance of various video cards: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-970.c2620
I selected your graphics card in the upper right scroll window (Relative Performance), GeForce GTX 970 for 100% performance.
A little scroll lower is my graphics card GeForce GTX 1060 6GB turned out to be with a performance of 109 % relative to yours.
We have almost identical video cards in terms of performance.
I spent a lot of time trying to get any routes, even the most difficult to process, to work with a reasonable load of hardware.
As a result, I found the optimal settings, you can try it if you want:

Thanks for all the advice and insights. Most useful indeed.

Further to my original post, I'd been looking into this further online. One thing I did discover was about degraded thermal paste so decided to open my GPU up and have a look. It wasn't pretty. The paste was dry and rock hard which leads me to suspect the processor has been running extremely hot and may be fried.

I've managed to remove the old paste and replaced it with fresh stuff so I'm going to try that first and see what happens.

As an update, I tried running TRS22 using oldman's setting with fresh thermal paste applied. Temperatures and GPU usage was much lower but I'm going to try turning up some of the settings to see if I can get a bit of a better result. Prior to my Windows 11 update, the GPU was handling TRS22 well and the fans weren't ramping up particularly. I may end up putting the PC into a professional as the issues are beyond my knowledge.
