AnnouncingTrainz™ Simulator 2009 & Trainz™ Simulator X

Heye Tony, i'm really glad to read your post. Though i don't have many time left for TRS, i am sure it will be great to try this new version.

Best regards from Belgium,

André.

Any marine railroading and/or maintenance scheduling in any of these future Trainz?

Tony: Please do us all a big favor and break up the .ja files into smaller pieces. For instance, because I am only interested in US content, if all killometer speed signs were in a MetricSpeedSigns.ja file, I could get rid of them all just by deleting that file.

I like TC because it has less built-in content, but even it has lots of stuff I don't want. Give us a good basic platform and an easy way to add the stuff we want, eschewing the things we don't want.

Give prefab Route packs to those who want them but, but give me asset add-on packs like a good CD worth of US roads, streets, driveways, sidewalks, traffic lights, and road signs, etc., all in one pack.

I know there are things like this on the DLS, but a lot of the time, they are incomplete sets or are difficult to use or are incompatible with other assets, etc. I want assets sets that are 1: Regional, 2: Complete (in the case of things like road sets, or turnout sets, etc.), 3: Compatible with other assets, 4: Easy to use\configure, 5: Good quality, 6: Individualy installable\deleteable.

The layout I have in the basement fits these criteria and I just want the same from my virtual layout. I am asking a lot less from V-Scale than many others on this forum. This is simply granularity of packaging, while others are asking for difficult to implement features.

Great, no more rumours, finally hearing from the horses mouth................

Hey Tony,
Great to finally hear from ya. (we've been waiting a while)...
It's great to read that Trainz's now looks like it has a long term future. That's absolutely great news & I'm personally really stoked....
Now maybe you can finally do the right & honourable thing by announcing the winner of the "Trainz Classic Route Building Competition" and paying the lucky winner out there $1,000A that you/Auran promised them.....
As you stated, over ONE MILLIONS copies of Trainz has now been sold, so surely you/Auran can afford to pay out the 'nickel & dime' amount of $1,000A to some lucky winner of the competition.
(if you still can't, PM me & I'll personally donate $100 NZ to the lucky winner).
As far as I'm personally concerned the only way YOU & Auran will ever regain any "MANA" (honour & creditability) with me and from what I've read/heard a lot of other fellow Trainzer's IS TO HONOUR WHAT YOU ORGINALLY AGREED TO DO AND THAT'S PAY THE WINNER OF THE COMPETITION OUT THE PRIZE OF $1,000A. (Full stop)!!!!!
(if at the end of the day, you are full of that runny stuff, then don't be to surprized if from here on in, the Trainz community in general don't believe a word you say).
Please, just do the right thing and cough up................

Your annoucement about the Auran plans for the next 2/3 years is absolutely fantastic news.
News that most of the community has been patiently waiting to hear for over six months, (plus).
If you really do give a ____ about the 99.9% of loyal Trainz commumity supporters out there, now's your chance to prove it....
Please, just make the announcement & cough up, or you'll probably lose all credibility with the community forever..... (Credibility that no amount of money will ever buy you/Auran back). Your the CEO, and the buck stops with you............

Cheers, Mac (from across the ditch)......

PS; Like 99.9% of fellow Trainzer's out there, we all just want to see Auran survive and flourish in the future.
The reason; We just want to continue to be on this exciting journey that Auran & the Trainz community in general has taken us on to date & to continue to see the boundries being pushed in what has to be the most incredible Trains sim to out there........

A few weeks ago I predicted that in the run up to the release of TC3, there would be an increased presence on the boards from Auran staff, as the usual PR wheels get set in motion.

Nevertheless, I'm going to put my cynical hat to one side for a while, and make a few comments on Tony's post.

This new developer website sounds great, and, if Tony's word is good, will mean that communication between Auran and the community will once again be something that the Sim will benefit from (although, it should never have been lost in the first place).

Some very nice sounding features for surveyor, and they've been asked for for a very long time. It's good to see that Auran may now have the time and resources to implement them.
It's a shame that DEM importing isn't going to be included right away, as I've always believed that this is one of the more important things that Trainz has always been lacking, and for no good reason.
In fact, I would say for me that it's importance is second only to my next point.

Exporters and plugins for 3D packages!
I'm not sure if it's in this thread or another posted in the last couple of days, but I did see someone mention exporters, and I think Tony implied that they are forthcoming.
Did I dream this, or is it a fact?
I strongly suggest that if this is true, then Auran get them done and get them out there.
We've all been witness to the nonsense that surrounded the last promised set of exporters, and I really hope that this time Auran get them right and get them out there.
And not just for the latest versions of 3D Max either.
If I'm right, and exporters are on their way, could you please shed some light on what porgrams they are for, and what versions?

CMP!
Hmmm.
Well, not having bought the first 2 TC's, I can't say whether it's improved since TRS2006 or not, but I'll know soon enough with TC3.
If there's the slightest chance that a percentage of your target audience could still have problems with it, then for Jedi's sake, re-write it from the ground up for TRS2009.

I'm going to put my cynical hat back on now.
Press releases and increased Auran participation aside, it is now up to Auran to prove to those people who have heard it all before that this time it's different.
We will see in the coming months whether it's all rhetoric or not, first and foremost with the new sites and forums being opened this month.
Then, with the level of participation on their part in the coming months.

Before I take off my hat again, I must say that it's interesting that the announcement of Fury being put on the back-boiler coincides with the news that there are new versions of Trainz on the horizon.
A shift of priority or funds?
Or both?

Right.
I'm going to take off my cynical hat now, and I promise not to wear it again for the whole of June. (you can call me on that), and that I won't take the opportunity to "read between the lines" on Auran's comments.

As someone who has been here since 2002, I would really like to see Trainz become what we've all always wanted it to become, and I think that Auran deserve at least one more chance to show that we're not something that Fury brought in on the bottom of it's shoe!

I'm looking forward to what transpires in the next 3 weeks.

Smiley.

Interesting point and this is something that I'm looking forward too ... lets hope it's used for two way communication .. feedback from users is just as important as info from devs .

Rumoured plugin for 3dsMax R9 was apparently being " Tested " ... hopefully it was tested at more than a basic level :(

And add support for the Blender fans :)

Good post Smiley :) As I said, I hope for Aurans/Trainz Success, so I'll be lurking around to see what eventuates.

If the graphics are going to be more intense in the new versions, what about us poor souls with 2-4 year old machines that are just pushing the TRS2004 and TRS2006 boundaries at the moment? Would you be able to change the settings for older ones? If you make a program that will only work on a new or up to 6 month old technology, then you will have missed out on sales through specific machines only.

Also, would it be a backwards compatable program for earlier versions, or basically start fresh?

By the way, my 7 year old son loves TRS2004. A couple of years ago when he was 5, I could not do track into a terminal. I am very computer literate and troubleshoot every one elses computers when they have trouble. After almost 2 hours trying to work it out, Mr 5 year old came up and said 'this is how you do it dad' and withing 20 seconds he showed me what to do! If a 5 year old can show someone who knows computers inside out, then Trainz is ideal for any age.

Tony --

Count me in, provided CMP is ditched.

The original method of easily identifiable folders plus an updated TrainzObjectz is far better for the many of us who like to tinker with assets and dependencies.

Phil

Here, here!
Hope I'm still around to "pre-order";)

I really like the idea from mikemike to market the next version of Trainz as first of all a program which make it possible to build virtual worlds. The very name of the program could be "Virtual World Maker" or something like that. Your must of course also remind todays Trainz users that this program also includes a much more refined Trainz program. On the program package you could for example have the following text: "Virtual World Maker - Trainz 2009". With this approach Auran could most probably not only sell this program to those who want to build and run virtual railroads but also to those who wants to build virtual worlds in general or with other transportation themes.
A program named "Virtual World Maker"could also be a program by Auran without a fully integrated Trainz. Still with a functional resemblance with Trainz 2009 first of all when in surveyor mode. This program should have full compatibility with the objects in the object database and it should be possible to get assets like locos from this database and to run them on the railroads you have built in this program. Maybe it shouldn´t be possible to build sofisticated signalsystems and things like that in this program.

Its been a while......
since I last visited these forums :o. But I havent really had any trainz time its not even on my PC but this other version could. Well you never know. Will it be backward compatable .... got crap loads of Decent UK stuff lying about just wanting to be used.

Cheers

Just wondering if it would be possible with 09 or X to make TRS compatible with Linux without having to rely on WINE (which refuses to make TRS work on my computer). As has been mentioned elsewhere there are game engines that would allow this already available. In addition with recent versions of distros like Ubuntu drivers are becoming easier to get hold of in many cases. The other advantage for me personally is that I can get my computers to run much faster with Ubuntu than Windows so could easily feel a performance boost from this.

I do like the look of the plans for the next few years but if it is to continue to be entirely for Windows some of the shine is lost for me.

Andy

Just make sure it runs on XP and you are guaranteed to outsell the new sim from Microsoft. I (and many others), will never switch to Vista.

Hello

Yep could to see yea Hentis, another oldtime Trainzer.

It's like school reunion in this thread! Lots of fine folks I haven't seen in many a moon. Great to hear from Axe, Hentis, and the rest of the old gang.

How I yearn for the excitement of the early years; every new feature brought out dozens of drool smilies. I hope that, beneath the marketing hype, something exciting is in store for us as well. Let the anticipation build!
