AnnouncingTrainz™ Simulator 2009 & Trainz™ Simulator X

I'm confused. We already have TRS2004 and 2006, plus Trainz Classics 1 and 2 shortly to be joined by Trainz Classics 3.Now we are to have TRS2009 and TRS-X.Should I get TC3 or wait for TRS2009 and what will the difference be...

Microsoft borrowed the idea of an 'X' anyway. Either the Romans or Apple came up with it first. ;)

But then, what have the Romans ever done for us?
:)

I suggest waiting to see the reaction to TC3 and then if there is no big show stopper £15 sounds good value to me.

Hello

Trainz Classics 3 is next in line, you should buy TC3 at-least now most up to date Trainz Version, TC3 release is expected in the next 3/4 weeks.:) then TC4.:o

Trainz Simulator 2009 is next in line due 2009/2010.

Trainz Simulator X is a working title (Trainz 10th anniversary title).:)

I'd say it will be more like this:

Trainz Simulator 2009 is next in line due Q4 2008. (yes end of this year)

Trainz Simulator X is a working title (Trainz 10th anniversary title).:)
TSX is currently schedualed for a Q4 2009 release.

I'd buy TC3 as soon as I could. Not only will you be gaining a 'sneak peak' into the future at a bargain price it'll also put more money into the development of TSX, etc.

TC3 only contains one route, but it's one hell of a route and IMHO is worth the price of admission alone. Throw in all the new code changes and TC3 is easily the best TC release to date if not the best Trainz release.

Not necessarily true. Reading Tony's second post in this thread reveals this little tidbit...

Amigacooke - Trainz Classics is not dead, but it needs to find a way to replicate faster (more at rabbit speed than elephant speed) if it is going to be profitable.

So it sounds to me like they'll continue Classics as more of an expansion pack line for the new versions of Trainz, rather than the main focus....and possibly with less time between releases, which will be nice.

Kinda sounds like Greg Lane's RSP post in which he said the plan was to do a new version every three years, with expansion packs being released in the years between....just on a smaller scale here (a new version every year or so and Classics releases to help support the new releases in between.)

Ahhhh, I love speculating.

I have faith, sure, well, a little *chuckles* that all will be revealed in due time, when they're ready to tell us. Theory, speculation and rampant crazy ideas (most of these three are mine!), won't really do much, except get us a false sense of expectation. I for one, hope that when its done, its done to the best of capability, both from Auran's perspective and those of their hard working and often forgotten (except when things go wrong!) beta-testers :)

If CMP was seperated from out of the integral part of trainz as now, might be interesting but as I don't need cmp for online content as make my own and it locks up on commiting my own content to make my own scenery when trying TC1&2 probably not for me.
(roughly) CMP is a beast that will be tamed.

I don't think CMP is a beast, I like it a lot when it runs. The only taming that needs doing is to stop the apparent locking up due to 100% CPU usage. That way TRS2009 might not be thought of as yet another version that freezes and crashes on a regular basis. (Am I flogging a dead horse? This is such an easy fix, it drives me crazy.)

I'd tread lightly when calling issues "easy fixes." While it's certainly possible that the 100% CPU usage might be something that can be amended in a few hours, bugs like excessive resource usage have a tendency to be notoriously difficult to locate in a piece of code....and yes, I am speaking from (admittedly amateur) experience.

I fully agree, however, that CMP is a very handy tool when it's not locked up. Although there's certainly a lot that could be done to improve it, a lot of which has been beaten to death over and over on Suggestions threads.

Whatever happens make it without too many delays - some of us aren't getting any younger !!

Just want to add Euphod - you always make my day - thanks.

I won't say much on this now, read Tony's second post in this thread TC will continue more like an expansion pack.

Yep ure right.:)

So does 2009 have a new graphics engine?

won't say much just now, time will tell.:o

But what is so silly about it is that it gives CMP, and hence Trainz, such a bad image. For instance when you click "Edit in Explorer" in the right-click menu (when it finally comes up!) nothing happens. That is perceived by most people as a software failure. Of course it isn't, it's just that Windows doesn't get a look-in. It has such a huge negative impact for what is, to expert programmers like the Auran guys, simple to rectify. I'd love to get a comment from someone at Auran.

It works fine under XP, I presume you mean it doesn't open an Explorer window under Vista - nobody said TRS2006 will run properly under Vista. This has already been addressed in TC.

I for one think this is all very interesting news, though there are confidence issues with Auran following the events of the last year and previous promises that haven't been followed through.

One thing that does strike me as strange though is the promise of such a major make-over of the game (eg. the upgrade to the grid size) so soon after the release of TC3. There is talk about TRS09 being available before the end of 2008, ie. less than 6 months after the release of TC3. And even if it was first quarter of 2009, that's still less than 12 months. Can it be sensible to release TC3 than effectively obsolete it in such a short time? And how will that effect sales?

All very strange.....

Nevertheless, this will not effect my decision to buy TC3 as soon as it's released. TC3 is here and its real. TRS09 is still a press release.

I don't recall seeing any mention of release dates in Tony's posts. I think one year for TRS2009 and two years for Trainz X would be more realistic.

Trainz Simulator 2009 is the next major step in the evolution of the most flexible rail simulation ever created, but it is merely a stepping stone to bigger and better things. As with every previous release, it is only once people have the new tools in their hands that the amazing improvements in quality can be made. Therefore whilst TS2009 will be a big step up from previous releases, we are even more excited about celebrating the 10th anniversary of the beginning of Trainz with the release of Trainz™ Simulator X. This release is scheduled for the end of 2009 and we can’t wait to talk about the big new features we have planned.

The original post in this thread contains the release quote.
