About Derailments

Why do people make such a big deal if the derailments are not realistic. They are not meant to be realistic! A derailment is the consequence of you doing something wrong that results in the train being unusable. You did something wrong. Thats the point! The trains not colliding when derailment occurs does help the framerate. Its a train simulator, not a train wreck simulator. Who buys a product that is truly a hard core simulation to goof off? Its a waste of money if you did that.

Unless you bought RW or MSTS... They are really fun to intentionally wreck your trains! You need to go youtube and watch some of the train wreck videos for MSTS and RW's and you will find yourself laughing at how many people do buy train sims to wreck trains....

Best thing is to rig one of the legs of your computer chair to collapse when you pull a cord, and when you derail, yank on the cord. It really kicks the immersion factor up a few notches.

Response for Enzo: Back when I was new to any sort of train sim, I used to do this all the time! It was amusing, but after you had a good laugh or 2(or 17) you start to actually go for realisim.

Response for Robert: I'm gonna have to try it! What on earth caused you to think of that?

Well, now that I am a good bit older than I was back when I played MSTS.. I now play the games correctly and dont intentionally wreck trains (Most of the time)... Running trains proto style even on a fictional route is more fun than wrecking trains on purpose in my opinion...

Did it in flight sims. When botching a water landing in a float plane, a bucket of water above your chair gets a very realistic effect when it tips over.

Interesting...

We would need a smell surround system to add in the oil and diesel fuel when there's a derailment with a train and a heat gun in case there was a fire.

With MSTS I hated the derailments because that would end an activity, and I didn't even cause the derailments! I setup one activity on the Shelby to Whitefish route. I'd make it as far as the Java Flats, after driving for what seemed like hours, only to have the message come up about a derailment. What!? That was it, game over! On more than one occasion, I saw the AI train actually derail in front of me. The train ignored a signal, and plowed right through the switch at 45 mph as though it didn't even exist. The AI traffic, in case anyone was wondering, was set to follow the given path as it existed in the built-in activity without any modifications.

At least in Trainz, the delete derailed consists rule cleans up the derailment so we can continue to play, and with the Quick Drive option, you can put in a consist in its place so nothing is lost. Although, one day I had a really annoying AI driver that kept doing stupid things, so I had him run a switch at high speed (I took over), and he and his train disappeared. I didn't even replace him!

With realistic derailments on, not the whole train derails, and the cars don't go bouncing all over the place. This makes the derailment more realistic, but the derailments are awfully lame with a train falling off the track when running a switch at 4 mph.

There is only one Bucryus 250 Ton Crane, and it is non animated.

It would be really realistic if one could drive the wreck crane train out, and if you could select: "Rerail train in minutes" (1 min - 60 min).

There is a "Derailment Eraser" but I have never seen an actual "Re-Railer" that puts a derailed train back on the track.

You bring up one of the best ideas for trainz I have heard yet.... I would love this feature... I mean not that I am going to wreck trains to just get it out there... But you never know when those derailments are gonna happen on those mega routes....

Sometimes the train derails under AI, why IDK. I use the re-rail portal kuid2:116387:5:1 and just outside i put defect detactor, that let me know when a train has returned.
I set it up to return in 1 minute.

I've noticed that too. Why?

That's one way to fire the AI driver though.:hehe:

I must say do agree the point of te game reall is to well teach the basics of both train driving and the physics involed, however you say that the game does lack in areas of detail where it may be needed but lets hope thats something that will be improved with the next version if they bring a new one out

What would be cool to me is to have a recovery train with breakdown crane and other recovery vehicles one can select and load - ( must be able to operate them all too ) like a crane, jacks, bulldozers , back actors, etc that one can load as required and go and rerail your own mess up..., I guess one can install magnets in the files or similar to operate like the fishing sims..fish DDX40's and Big Boys out of the dam with the cranes or pull them out with the dozers...will have to protect yourself well though, otherwise that mad A1 driver might arrive and derail on top of you or drive right through your occupation.

Hallo Jan,

What a coincidence this morning I talked to Philsken and now see you here looking for the Xmastree presents.
Well the russian have some stuff very well done but was only TS2010 but who knows some tweaking could do wonders. So now you know what I try to collect from the junkyard fix and load for Roy's Trains TS14 routes. Would be something opertating rescue and shovel mission.
Jannie you got mail!
