2010 why does it replace track and trees?

hi all

can somebody please tell me why 2010 replaces the trees and the track in a cdp that gets imported from an earlier version?

is there any way to stop it?

especially with my route having trees that suit australia rather than those generic speedtrees

any help appreciated
thanks

Hi Ron,

This is because the so-called newer assets in 2010 are setup in their configs to obsolete the other items. I know how to change the obsolete tags, but I'm not sure it can be done with built-in items.

hi john

so that means that the hours i spent putting down track and trees are all wasted if i decided to import my route to 2010.

is that correct?

that doesnt seem to be a very convincing argument to buy 2010for me

thanks

I have found a way to do this:
You need to open TS2009, or whatever your older version of TS is.
Create a clone of the asset that is being replaced in TS2010.
Give this cloned asset a new name, that you will be able to find when you look for it in TS2010.

Once you have all of your cloned assets in the previous Trainz, export them as .cdp (you can put them all into one file).

Open TS2010 CM3, and import the .cdp you created in the previous version.

You may need to fix the imported assets. Some will have missing textures.
Use PevSoft utility Texture2TGA to fix this.

Open your route in TS2010, and use the Replace Assets feature from the main menu to replace the Speedtrees, or whatever assets were changed to the ones you want.

Note: Back in CM3, there are some cases where you might get errors or warnings about .pm files not being supported in TS2010. If they are just warnings, first try ignoring them. But if the assets don't open, then you need to convert the .pm to .im, using another PevSoft utility; pm2im.

If you need help on installing and using the PevSoft utils, there is a tutorial available somewhere on this forum. It is a bit tricky for the every-day gamer, but it works very well, and is easy to use once it is set up properly in TS.
I can help you with this, if you need, but it might take me a little time to get to it.

Good luck.

FW

FW's response makes the most sense, and the choice to obsolete items makes sense too, no need to get on the 2010 crit again.
Even software repositories work that way with 'depends', 'requires' and 'replaces' flags. I suppose if FW's advice doesn't cut it for you, the best would be to just live with the replaced values, until you can do a "replace assets" inside surveyor to fix them again? :D

it all depends on what track and trees you used. it isnt that it replaces all trees and track with what it wants, just certain kuids are obsoleted by the new items.

hi all

i use mp wood track as it represents qr quite nicely

for the trees i use a mixture mostly made for our australian conditions

one of my beta testers in england has the route in 2010 and i'm not impressed with the way the trees look

i dont need a big wobbly green thing where there was a stand of ghost gums

but thats just the way i feel about it

thanks for all your help

I hope I get you right.
Replacing the entire track line is rather simple. The difficulties start when you have many different tracks. But it can be workarounded, too. Use the 'replace asset' menu item to exchange the unwanted track with your desired one, of course you have to know which is the right one. Repeat the procerss with all other tracks to your desired state. If you have a double track it is more complicated. I had this problem. The cure was to change the reference (aliassed) kuid number in the track config to my desired one.

thanks mate

i use trainzmap in 2006 for that

i have not commited to buying 2010 as yet because of the track and tree issue

thanks

Hi ron --

"can somebody please tell me why 2010 replaces the trees and the track in a cdp that gets imported from an earlier version?"

Easy. 'Cause the Auran crew was too goddamn lazy to do it the proper way and use the "replace" function to replace trees and track in the routes they wanted to release with TS2010.

They used the "obsolete" function instead.

Do a DLS search for "MP Track wood v2" by philskene, which won't get obsoleted.

Then replace in Trainzmap, or TS2009/TS2010.

Charles
