Zec can you explain the difference between N3V's versions of TS2009 TS2010 and TS12 compaired to Steam's version in the hope that people who are looking at buying Trainz as a gift for someone at Christmas may avoid problems and your reply will be good for future reviews on buying Trainz.

Version number, updates, and one of Steam's servers was compromised recently and it is suspected some credit card information was stolen.

The DRM is the biggest problem. Steam can permanently turn off your purchase at will any time they want or remotely manipulate or delete data off your machine. Some of the world's biggest retailers have done just that.

Our version is the base 'international' edition. This version is then modified to suite the needs/desires of each publisher (Generally language changes, or DRM, depending on the publisher).

In the case of Steam, these have been modified to work with Steam's system. As such, patches can take a lot longer to be released, due to the modifications required for Steam.

There should be no content differences between the 'international' edition, and the Steam edition, except where a newer update may have changed the content.

Pro-tipp: dont buy it from Steam.
I did that and I will never make that mistake again.

It was way cheaper, but thats it on the good side.

Bad side: no update and the above mentioned DLC issue.
Cannot get my Blue Comet to run, as Steam looks for 2010 to run it, which I haven bought via Steam. And I´m to stupid to figure out where Steam put that stuff.

(No offense about Steam itself, rest of my games work fine.)

If the gift is going to a friend who is not computer savvy, then there is value to the Steam version, i.e. automatic check-and-repair of the Trainz core game files and easy (but lengthy) reinstallation if serious problems occur like hard drive crash or accidental corruption/erasure of the game. Steam takes care of a lot of the work that must otherwise be done "manually." On the other hand, if the friend is knowledgeable with computers, knows about files, directories, editing, updating-and-patching, etc., then the services from Steam would be no big deal.

As for DLC, the Duchess and the Blue Comet are available for Steam's version of Trainz in the Steam store, along with the Settle-and-Carlisle and Murchison 2 routes.

Comparisons about the differences seem to quickly become political, and some people abhor the thought of any software coming from "The Cloud." That said, I have friends who just don't understand how computers work, and I know they would have a better experience with the Steam version of Trainz and other games (or other "recreational prototypical simulations" :hehe: ).

Ironically, I think a lot of folks actually see that as a big disadvantage, the mandatory updates that cannot be rescheduled, assuming they're desirable at all.

Unrelated to this, someone also mentioned that Steam multiplayer doesn't work with everyone else's. Don't know if that was mentioned yet.
