Z scale Briefcase Layout

NorthWest Ohio Trainz2010
I have recently bought a small Z scale train set. My long term goal is to run it out of a briefcase, as a small layout. The only problem is my set did not come with the required 9V transformer. So for now I'm running it with an old HO scale transformer at a low speed. I would like to have it at some point so that I can run it off of a 9V battery. My only catch is what would be required to control the speed, as I know very little about electrical things of that nature. I already know how I will connect it and such but I would like to be able to run it from a small dial. Does anyone have any ideas of how I should approach this?

If you have another HO scale power pack, take it apart, disconnect the wires from the transformer from the low-voltage side where the speed controller is, remove the transformer and AC cord, and connect batteries to the wires that were connected to the transformer.

Get a good rheostat. Its a component of most power packs. You can hid it very easily. You just hook up the wires and your ready. Also get a polarity switch and a circuit breaker and incorporate that into the wiring
