Young People And Railways (how old are you?)

I'm 18. My Father got me into model trains when I was 2 yrs old and I have Always been collecting the trains with my father for a long time. I have been with trainz since the Very First Trainz Game came out

I Love Trains(Trainz)

 Hi there I was born in 1951 and i remember Steam trains whe i was young which were current atthe time , I rememer both Pliastow and strattford Steam Sheds, as i use to visit a steam driver friend with my mum, at pliastow shed AND I even sneaked ride in a double loco ride with a brakevan to Bow Steam shead, that was fun........I use to ride the woolwich to palice gates steam loco service from strattford to woolwich return , as I use to bunk school somtimes to do this, I grew up left school at the tender age of 14 going on 15 in the August of that year (the last year you could leave school at that age , any way went to HM forces as a boy solider stayed in the Army till sept 1973 come out the army and gained employment with British Rail as it was called then , I applied as a secondman a drivers assistant/come cleaner/trainee it would take approx 3 years to become a quified train driver, BUT I was persuded as their was a long waiting list that I would be best to come on as a Train Gaurd, then I would have a quicker chance, to get on the Trainee Driver roll, so I Trained as a Freight Gaurd at Temple Mills was there awhile got promoted to passenger Gaurd then, MainLine Conductor Gaurd at Liverpool Street, I was working the Harwich Boat train a few times and I also worked the Green King Steam specials from liverpool street...............For personal reasons I left BR and went to London Transport on the Underground, I passed my drivers ticket in 11 months was sent to the Northern line at waterloo depot, as the Underground was going through Changes i was only getting 1 or 2 driving turns a month, which pissed me of somwhat
so I then went to London Transport as a Crew Bus Driver at West Ham, stayed on the buses for over 22years I was medicialy retired from Holloway Bus Depot..................... and I dont live to far from the Depot and that have the Gospal Oak line at the bottom of my Garden ahhh sweet momories................................................

Well, I'm from 1953. Even before he knew if my mother would have a boy or a girl my father saw in this pregnancy an opportunity to buy a Märklin trainset. Needles to say I've allways enjoyed that bold step :hehe: and that first little steam engine of the same age still works like clockwork...

Greetings from overcast Amsterdam,

Jan

Sorry I haven't Posted For Ages But these responses are amazing.
I think we now need a list of what would get people into trains and Trainz

Reviving an old thread....

I just came across this thread and it made me smile - I get a real kick out of the younger generation still into the heavy movers that built so much of our world. I'm not an old timer by any means, but I am old enough to remember watching Milwaukee Road's trains come into and out of Tacoma, Washington as a kid before they went under. We always lived somewhere right along theirs, Burlington Northern's, or Union Pacific's trackage growing up. I got so used to the sounds when I lived in Skykomish, WA I could tell you how many locos were pulling how many cars up the grade and into the cascade tunnel just by the sound of the rumble and the frequency of my cabin windows shaking!! Who says Americans aren't into it?? Keep the spirit alive and by God pass it on to your kids!!

Hehe very clever! ;)

I'm 31 and have spent most of those years around trains of some sort (and hence, I've been a 'gunzal' (rail buff) for that length of time as well. :p)

Having lived in Perth all my life I was lucky enough to live near a railway line most of the time, so trains have always been a big part of my life, to the point I know the Perth to Armadale suburban railway off by heart! ;)

And I'll continue to be a train dag for the rest of my life. :hehe:

I just turned 55 and I have always had a facination with trains.

I have a faint memory of when I was not much older than 4 or 5, riding in the backseat of our family station wagon. While we were stopped at a railroad crossing in Fort Wayne, In., I felt the car shake violently as a big black train ripped past us. It spewed thick smoke and steam.

After the train cleared I saw a large sign on the side of the brick building across the tracks with a picture of a train. I asked my dad what the sign said. He replied, "Nickel-Plate Road. They use to run through here all of the time until recently."

It made quite an impression.

I was 9 when I started with trainz.
I was only about 3 or 4 when I started out. (Thomas)
Now, I'm a teenager, and My interest is diesel power.

19 years young, and started when I was born. So I do remember Conrail, and am in love with the iron horse(The steam Locomotive), American Standard and Narrow Gauge, Mostly the PRR and the EBT.

Im 13 14 on the 4th of feb my intrest in trains begain when i was around 2 when i loved the thomas series (which i still do  ) alot of the admiaration for trains came from my dads dad who was a locomotive driver. i begain trains in around 2007.

For me,it started with Thomas(which I'm proud to say,I'm still into)at the age of 3.Now 16 going on 17 and I am hooked on the "proper locos" e.g Castles,Kings,Halls,Manors, anything that rolled out of Swindon:hehe: :p

I found trainz by accident in a bookstore, brought it home but computer wasn't able to handle it.Year later/year ago,new laptop and I entered the world of trainz in all its glory:D

So while the visual inicaditions of young people into trains may be declining but rest asured, the hobby is alive and strong.

Thomas can be blamed for many things, but not my interest in railways. That started on my walk to school. How ever there is a Thomas in my life who will be helped along the road of an interest in trains... my 2 year old grand son!
