Worth getting Trainz 2012?

Hi there Trainz folk,

I'm back at Trainz 2010 again after a year or so of computer trouble and lack of time to get stuff sorted, I'm planning to spend a few hundred hours into making a fantastic fictional route again.... and then I saw Trainz 2012 has been released. Is it worth the 100 bucks? Or is 2010 good enough?

Sorry, I've been away for a while, would appreciate some feedback.
 
Actually, TS12 can be bought for $40AUD at the Auran shop - I'm guessing you looked at the megapack w/ the Anniversary Edition thing they're selling? I think they have a few of those promos now but it's probably overkill unless you want the DLC, and even then, you can find vouchers for those from time to time or sales over at JointedRail.

In any case, I think TS12 is worth it, even though I do my route-building in TS2010, mainly to ensure compatibility for folks who eventually will be downloading it. There have been quite a few improvements "under the hood" on things such as draw distance and stability. Were it the case that you were just diving into Trainz for the first time, I might recommend TS2010 just because it comes with so many routes versus the 8 or 9 that come with TS12, but that won't be an issue for you. However, the routes in TS12 are well worth the $40 (or even the $100 IMO) so I don't think you'll be wasting your money.
 
So I am in a similar situation in that I am returning to TS 2009 and I am trying to figure our if TS2012 is the next, best step. But I keep seeing the TS2010 compatibility and all of the stuff for it that is available. Can you still buy TS2010 from the Auran website?

With regard to buying TS12 it is a must for multiplayer. One big word of caution. Ideally you should buy it from Planet Auran either as a digital download or a disc. It is important for multiplayer that you do. It is possible to buy a regional copy for multiplayer but before you do make sure it will patch to build 49922. At this time I don,t believe the Steam version will, although N3V Games are supposed to be fixing all the Steam Issues. Be careful when buying it from Planet Auran because they are doing a special Steam promotion. I find it rather strange as the Steam version is sub standard. As for the lack of routes in TS12 I never found it a problem. There are plenty on the DLS. Some of the Multiplayer routes are really good and there is nothing to stop you playing them solo. You could either remove the multiplayer rule or play a private session. By the way there is a really good thread on regional patching somewhere. Update the link is in a post by Shaneturner in a thread called "New Tutorial Site Page" etc!

Thanks for the replies guys. I might stick with Trainz 2010 for now as I don't care for multiplayer and it seems 2010 still supports the most content. If 2012 will begin to have more content and DLC I might consider the switch.

Agreed, as there are very few changes between TS12 and TS10 except for better graphics and the fact that there are a few more downloads that work for TS12 than for TS10. Most downloads are made for TS09.
 
I am looking to get move from Trainz 2009 and move to Trainz 2010. There is nothing wrong with 09 but I would like 10 because of better cars moving on the road, and the realistic treez or one of those 3d treez. I wonder if there will be another update or patch for trainz 2012 that will allow for compatibility with older items. One thing I definitely like about trainz 2010 is the doppler effect and better track sounds.
 
N3V have made it clear that that will not happen. TS12 will never have a compatibilty mode - only trouble is, the search facility is not working properly so I cannot find the relevant post.

No one has mentioned that TS12 has a much improved and efficient Taddaemon which closes down very quickly minimizing the need for repeated and lengthy EDR's. Another great feature is its ability to perform database updates in large batches (right from the menu) without resorting to CMP workarounds. Anything in TS10 can be updated to work in TS12.
 
So the gap seems to really be if you are at 2009 and jump to 2012, because you can no longer use the old content in 2012, and you can't enjoy the new stuff in 2010 and still have compatibility with 2009 stuff. It also seems like to need 2010 to bridge stuff to 2012. I.e. Load 2009 in 2010 and update it, then be able to run it in 2012.

Since you can't buy 2010, this seems like it leaves a group of users with an unpleasant choice. Perhaps Auran should make 2010 a free download for anyone who owns 2012?
 
No, all around.

You can use old content in both TS2010 and TS12, except some of the pre-09 stuff. Those are, in almost all cases, fixable. I'd guestimate maybe about 5%-10% of the content on the DLS; probably less if you account for the tendency of some people to want to use newer content anyway. You can do the fixes in TS12 and send virtually all of them back to TS2009, if you want. Most of the major changes were made to 2009, though a few (mostly obscure ones) to 2010.

TS2010 has a "compatibility mode" (provided that you do not update to the multiplayer patch) which allows most of this older content to run unfixed, but with a performance penalty.

TS2010 is still available and goes for $19.99.

I have two copies of 2010 and two copies of 2012 and will only run 2010. I bought 2012 for the mulitplayer, but that's not worth it. I bought the second copy of 2012 to run a MP server, but lost interest real quick because of the fact that all content has to be on the dls. It's tough building a route and session knowing that there is so much great content out there, that you can't use. I gave up and haven't fired up 2012 in months. For $19.99 you can't beat getting 2010, especially since you have 2006 and 2009.
 
I use both TS2010 and TS12 and TS12 runs far smoother, is better graphically and uses the code more efficiently. If I switch from a train in Kings X to one in York TS12 it is virtually instantaneous (within reason) but TS2010 can take quite a few seconds to redraw the scene.

So TS12 runs much smoother then? I have a lot of lag when I have trees in the landscape even though my pc isn't that slow. I'm thinking of getting it because of the father's day sale bit need more reasons to do it. Beside the new routes is there anything else significantly better? And will all my TS10 content go straight to TS12??
 
I am thinking to get one, and TS12 is now $16USD in Amazon (download version).
Should I get it from Amazon, or should I get TS2010 from N3V for $20. The TS12 in N3V is $25, which is more expensive than I was expecting.
 
Be careful buying download versions from other than N3V as you might be buying the Steam version which at present has patching issues.

I guess I'm a bit of a newbie as I've only been in the hobby since TS10. I've upgraded both my computer and Trainz to TS12 and I can say I won't go back to TS10. Why? Easy, as building a new fictional route TS12 is by far better all the way around. Also it seems the content creators are also moving on to TS12 and the new content is simply amazing!

The downside is TS12 needs a pretty big "iron horse" to run properly but it pays you with some stunning graphics or from my point of view ease of building a very large route.
