Why I deleted Trainz 2009

I deleted 09 because I could not get it to update without sliding down a 40 razor blade into a pool of alcohol then standing on my head with my arms at a 124 1/2 degree angle and my feet at a 26 degree angle from my knees while reading Tolstoy's War and Peace.

Too much trouble. I'll stick with 06 until things get worked out.

rofl...

ok ive installed ts09 from the original release like 4 times already and it always updates to the latest version, i never had to slide on anything.

I think this one will be more compatible with the system I've got, I'm thinking if I get the GeForce GTS 250 1024MB, I might need to upgrade the guts of the computer as well, where-as if I use Geforce 9800 GT 1024MB, that should fit into my computer without swearing, blood and guts:D Thank you John, once again for your valuable time and help, it's very much appreciated... Joe,
Wouldn't hurt to have a look at this site; http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/...uality/3DMark06-v1.1.0-3DMark-Score,1533.html - (Just be a where that there are both SLI benchmarks and benchmarks of a single video card on the same chart). Clearly John's recommendation wins out.
Cheers, Mac...

Well let's see, I have the patch on my computer, I am using a clean install of 09. I unplugged my computer from my modem, turned off virus protection. started the update, 30 minutes later I get that it is unable to patch and it aborts the patch. I uninstall 09, use several different programs to make sure that it is all gone, defrag the drive. Re-install 09, restart in safe mode, make sure virus scanner is turned off, restart the patch, 30 minutes later I get that it is still unable to patch and it aborts. I restart Windows XP and format the drive that I had dedicated to 09 and install something else in it's place.

if you do a clean install of 09 now, it should be able to auto patch to the latest version. i did this several days ago. it takes a long time. like 2 hours on my system, but you just have to let it go.

Same here when i 1st got it ( like 1.5 monthes ago) the pachtes took forever and froze but the game worked kept crashing, so i did a clean install. took about 1.5 hours i just made sure nothing els was running and found things to do around the house.. now it works completely fine I live by TS 2006 tho 2009 seems to still have its issues some times and i don't feel like uploading all my content to it. i mess around here and there and the detail is awesome tho.. I have TS 2010 coming my way and figure it should be excellent.

I'M running windows vista 32bit 4gb Geforce 9400 GT 512 128bit. great card and no added upgrades to my PC. For those upgrading vid cards make sure you check the Power Supply needed to use card and be sure your PC has enough en less your willing to upgrade.

If TS2010 is good as its spose to be ill probably advently buy a HP hardcore gaming pc with like 12gb and all the latest stuff and just have 2 computers..

Wow, thank you for this meatloaf,

This information is brilliant, I can now see what I get for my money, basically if I stick around the nVidia 9800's then I can't go far wrong, I'm going to see if I get the same silver land with Trainz 2010. If I do, then I'll buy windows 7 and I'll upgrade to a new Graphics card and see how that performs...

Thank you meatloaf and John for your valuable information on Graphics cards, these sites are very helpful indeed...

Many Thanks

This threrad belongs in another section. Most of us tune in here for the great screenies, not whining:p

FWIW, I'm going back to TS2006 due to the lighting problems(landscape lightens when train in tunnel) along with other issues. Mine also shows up as white/silver when the fog settings are both way up but just lightens the landscape with no fog- looks bad though. I reported this issue in an earlier beta but never got a response and it still exists in 40040. I've seen this in both XP SP3 and Win7 and with various drivers for my 9600GT. I also tried both DirectX and OpenGL. I generally use external view and mountain type of routes so it is a major problem for me. I WON"T be upgrading to TS2010 to see if this problem gets corrected in that.

I've got Trainz 2010 on order, and I've experienced exactly the same as you, I will let you know if the silver land issue has been resolved in Trainz 2010, when it arrives...

I've seen this many a time before. I had this issue with Crysis a year ago. The cause...

Out of date shader model drivers on 8600 and 9600's.

Try updating to the latest video card drivers, and get yourself over to the nVidia SDK page, download the Texture Toolkit. From memory this also helps, especially with sending alpha level info to the GPU instead of the CPU. I have a feeling that the *600's have dodgy shader models. Ever since upgrading to a Zotak 295 I've had no issues with anything of this nature.

FSF.

Thanks for the reply(both of you :-)). I got the latest drivers the other day as a last ditch effort but when it didn't help I decided it was just time to go back to 06(getting tired of all the texture and spline repairs frankly). TS2009 SP1 wasn't too bad except with this issue from what I remember. I just went to the NVidia site but I wasn't really sure what I was looking for in regard to the Texture Toolkit. I assume it must be related to installing some new libraries or some such thing. Thanks again.

Thank you FirstSoloFlight for the tip,

Just a quick update...

The computer I use for trainz 2009 has a PCI-e GeForce geforce 7300, and I have just tested Trainz 2009 on the computer I am on for the internet which has a PCI-e GeForce 9500GT 1Gb DDR2 1xDVI inside, and low and behold the silver land is on this computer as well, so both graphics cards have brought up the same results...

Eventhough the recommended for Trainz 2010 includes the Geforce 8600 which you mentioned, maybe more people will experience the silver land issue if they are using this card, or maybe Auran have fixed this issue.

Recomended for Trainz 2010
Windows Vista/Windows 7 (64bit)
2GB RAM
Core 2 Duo (or equivalent)
nVidia Geforce 8600 (or equivalent)
15GB Free Hard Drive Space "

I'll wait and see if I get the silver land issue in Trainz 2010 before I do anything, it's wierd how this silver land only appeared in Trainz 2009, it doesn't appear in Trainz 2006 / Trainz 2004 / Trainz UTC / Trainz Classics UK 3 or any other game...

Once again many thanks FirstSoloFlight for this information and also for taking time out to help us... I will do as you say and visit the nVidia site and download texture toolkit and see if that gives any better results...

Joe Airtime

I will keep you informed...

Just an update,

I installed all the latest nVidia drivers and also included the SDK toolkit to the computer using the...

PCI-e GeForce geforce 7300

and to the other seperate computer using the... PCI-e GeForce 9500GT 1Gb

and still both computers produce the silver land...

if this is what is recomended for trainz

Recomended for Trainz 2010
Windows Vista/Windows 7 (64bit)
2GB RAM
Core 2 Duo (or equivalent)
nVidia Geforce 8600 (or equivalent)
15GB Free Hard Drive Space "

Then the graphics card in question will most certainly produce silver land, hopefully Auran have solved the silver land issue, if they now say you can use the nVidia GeForce 8600 (or equivalent)

At this moment in time I am now lost... as two seperate computers with two seperate nVidia Geforce cards, have both produced the same silver land results...

I will await the arrival of Trainz 2010, and let you know if silver land has been fixed...

I have found what is causing the silver land problem...

Good weather fog and Bad weather fog set to maximum are causing silver land,

however when Good weather fog and Bad weather fog set to maximum, and then weather is added, this effect is made even worse...

This is before...Good weather fog and Bad weather fog set to maximum with rain, engine lights are switched off...
pg_2082383615.jpg

This is after...Good weather fog and Bad weather fog set to maximum with rain, engine lights are switched on...
pg_294470514.jpg

This happened in Trainz 2009 - build number 38411..
the previous early shots were from - Trainz 2009 build number 37625..

here is what I have found over the last couple of days, while testing Trainz...

Trainz 2009 - build number 38411 and 37625 both produce silver land - before and after SP2
Trainz Classics UK - no silver land
Trainz 2006 - no silver land
Trainz 2004 Passenger edition - no silver land
Trainz 2004 first edition - no silver land
Trainz UTC - no silver land

So looking at the results, something has changed with the headlight settings of trainz and the Good weather fog and Bad weather fog settings within Trainz 2009, all the above trainz programs were tested on two seperate machines, with two seperate nVidia GeForce graphics cards, only Trainz 2009 displayed the silver land effect...

Graphics cards used
PCI-e GeForce geforce 7300 / PCI-e GeForce 9500GT 1Gb

In the first pictures where the engine enters the tunnel, it turns the lights on?
Send this through HelpDesk also.

And if TS2010 needs this
nVidia Geforce 8600 (or equivalent)
and its better than a 8500GT (can't find comparison) then I'm stuck on TS2009 for now.

Doesn't need that specific card it's just a recommendation, I have not experienced any problems with a 1GB 8500GT on 2009 any version and I fully expect 2010 will work with it as it is above the minimum spec..
Basic chipset comparisons here: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/132 8500GT is listed but only at 256MB also read the notes at the bottom.

Thoughts........
Graphics cards may have the same chipset but not the same card manufacturer, performance can then differ depending on who assembled and probably how well and what memory it has on it, size and type, memory access times used 64, 128, 256 etc and what tweaks have been employed to get the most out of the card.
It's not unusual for an older card to out perform a newer one with a higher rated spec due to any or combinations of the above. Just because say an ABC card with an 8500GT chipset works perfectly for person A, it doesn't follow that an XYZ card with the same chipset will. Probably best to go on the advice from say Toms Hardware and not just the chipset alone.

This Silver Land problem couldn't be something related to a bad asset in the equation? If not graphics card related it may be that which again may explain we all are not getting it.

Wild guess, nothing to do with Anistropic settings?
