Why I deleted Trainz 2009

The problem is fairly insignificant for many/most people but is really bad for those who like to use Trainz more for a model railroad simulator and use mountain routes with tunnels. In my case, I usually have the camera free roaming so multiple engines entering tunnels really make things look bad- even with no fog whatsoever.

I totally agree with TheCTrain, it's OK if there is only one train on the route, but if you add a couple of trains, and your arriving at a country station with green grass everywhere, the last thing you want to see is the grass turning to silver or white, because another train down the route has entered a tunnel...

only when the engine lights come on in the tunnels, or if engine lights are switched on, then everywhere becomes white or silver... this seems to get worse beyond 18:30 at night...

OK we now have an ATI with the problem, so that knocks out the it's something to do specifically with Nvidia cards theory.
It's not related to the normal mapping in textures.
So............ what is different between those of us not having the problem and those that are?
Anyone having problems tried playing with size of the the cache, turning off or on for that matter shadows, disabling anistropy, probably irrelevant but changing the gamma setting or shouldn't have to but disabling hardware TL?

Or perhaps it's some actual card setting that is disabled? Probably need to find some one with an Identical card that isn't getting the silver land.

you are not alone i have the same issue with an Ati9600gt

Thank you for posting this, now I know it's not my nVidia Geforce card's at fault, this also happens with Ati cards as well...

I'm so glad you posted this on here, I thought my nVidia card was on the way out, I've only had it for three years and it hasn't even had a full workout yet...

At least now we know it's not the cards at fault, I believe there is nothing wrong with either the nVidia cards or the Ati cards, I definitly think it's something to do with engine headlights and lighting in trainz 2009...

Many thanks simking1 for posting on here, and letting us all know, our graphics cards are working just fine...

I thought I should let you know that I have now placed a ticket with the helpdesk regarding the silver/white land problem, As I believe there is now more forum friends having problems with this, hopefully someone from Auran, may be able to helps us fix this problem... I just hope and pray that this silver/white land problem is not going to be in Trainz 2010 as well...

I can now confirm that when its raining, dark and the engine lights of my recently downloaded steam engine are on I too have a silver land problem.

I have only found this with only one steam engine in trainz 2009, The Mallard has headlights attached, and as soon as they get switched on, silver land appears, the only thing is, I couldn't just run a fowler and the Flying Scotsman in the routes, as it gets quite bizzare after a while, especially seeing two Flying Scotsmans passing each other, which would never happen in real life...

Thank you Baureihe41, for coming forward and letting us know you have the same problem as we do...

Just an update...

I have sent a ticket to Auran helpdesk and to Trainz Dev site regarding the silver/white land...

They are now looking into the problem and will hopefully have a fix soon...

I have alerted them to this post, so they can take a look at the screenshots and the varying views with this topic...

If there is anyone else experienceing what we are seeing, we'd be extremely grateful if you come forward, and maybe even post some screenshots of what you have seen, with the silver/white land...

Many thanks to all who have posted on this thread, and also thank you to those who have come forward to either help us out or to say they have the same problem...

Thank you as always...

I just found my old post in TrainzDev regarding this problem using Trainz SP2 Beta build 39596 and I was also noticing that smoke from steam engines was causing the landscape to darken the area over the steam engine when in a tunnel. If this is still the case, then it seems that the loco lighting isn't the basic problem but more an issue of landscape(tunnel) leakage/transparency. Just a thought. BTW, I saw this issue with a few different tunnels.

I guess it's time to find out if TS2010 solved this problem. :-) Has anybody with this issue tried the new version and what was the result if you did? Thanks.

I have Trainz 2010, and there is a little bit of silver land, but nowhere near as bad as Trainz 2009, the silver now shows up in white in driver where the yellow grid lines are in surveyor, to me it looks like there is a touch of ice on the land, and it's in the distance, if you were to bring down the draw distance, it would still appear...

It also doesn't matter what colour the land is, you still get white specks on the land...

It's definitly something to do with Trainz 2009 and Trainz 2010, as Trainz 2004, Trainz 2006 and Trainz Classics UK doesn't show any silver land at all.

Screenshots to follow...

Hope this helps

Ok, from this thread NOBODY has noted wheter they are using directx or openGL... Try both and see if that makes a difference.

Hope this helps.

I've used both Direct X and Open GL and none have made any difference, silver land still exists, also both in Native and Compatibility Mode...

Shot is Glasgow to Falkirk in Trainz 2010, with same settings as Trainz 2009, note - the silver/white ice specs on the hillside.

More Screenshots from Trainz 2010, these are taken in driver mode...

pg_252805344.jpg

Trainz 2010, Engine headlights on. No silver land, just white lines on the hillside.

The trees in the distance lit up, have nothing to do with silver land, it's the point where the sun went down, and the sunlight shines through the trees but not the baseboard. Thankfully the new improved trees do not produce the lit up tree effect, the trees in the pictures are the old Trainz 2006 / 2009 trees, now replaced by Speedtree and JVC trees.

pg_1403926202.jpg

Trainz 2010 Engine lights off. Note - silver/white lines still appear on the hillside whether engine lights are on or off.

My opinion is Auran have done there best to eliminate the Silver land in Trainz 2010, but it has left white lines, like ice on hillsides and flat lands, this also appears in routes like the East Coast Mainline, at least it's a lot better than this below from trainz 2009 in the rain...

So thank you Auran for fixing the silver land in Trainz 2010 to the best of your ability, all that's needed now, is a service pack with this fix for those with Trainz 2009...

Hope this helps

This is for 2010, had no problems at all with 2009.
For Nvidia disable Application control of Antialiasing and set it to 2, that plus a couple of other tweaks should get rid of most of the white spots appearing, not tried disabling it completely.
I made a post on here somewhere with the full Nvidia settings I used to get rid of the problem.

For Information: The higher the antialiasing setting the more white land appears in the game, especially around water and certain splines, this give anyone any clues?

I never knew this, I always thought it was part of good weather fog / bad weather fog set to maximum that caused the white lines, I'll try out what you said above and see if anything improves. I thought antialiasing was to improve the overall look of the simulation and stop everything looking blurry.

I'll give this a go and see what happens, Thank you Clam for this information...

Hi Clam, I tried the antialiasing setting, but it did not effect the white lined horizon, but the good weather fog and bad weather fog set to maximum, does create the white lined horizon...

Below are some screenshots taken in Trainz 2010...

Trainz 2010 - Glasgow to Falkirk line - Engine lights off...

Trainz 2010 - Glasgow to Falkirk line - Engine lights on...
pg_1355121071.jpg

Now I thought the strange white horizon in the background might have been due to the Glasgow to Falkirk line being an old route, so I tried the same thing on the new East Coast Mainline route in Trainz 2010, below are the screenshots...

Trainz 2010 - East Coast Mainline - HST 125 Engine lights off...
pg_555390603.jpg

Trainz 2010 - East Coast Mainline - HST 125 Engine lights on...
pg_1016342204.jpg

Please note - the main reason for the large pictures is so you can see the strange white lined horizon in the background, the silver land issue has been fixed in Trainz 2010, but left a white lined mark on the hills instead...

Hope this helps
