Where did you learn?

Hello,
it is Maglevsx here and First off Im on a mission asking millions of questions and learning many things all just to get content into trainz
so please don’t yell at me for making tons of threads or sounding really dumb at times.;)

Anyway What I want to know is how did all you creators out there learn to export meshes from 3ds, gmax, blender, etc
and understand how to create text files and all of what is required to get that one piece of content into trainz
Did you go tutorials learn by hit and miss, tear all your hair out
Instant messaging step by step or another way.

I found creating 3d models easy and texturing easy but not scripting and making config files it sounds very complicated
and it’s doing my head in so your help would be greatly appreciated….

Thanks ~M~

I'm about 3 months new here and started with tutorials.

An easy to follow one for me was a Bank, from this site
http://www.tafweb-trainz.co.uk/tutorials.html

Most of the work is done in the config. Getting the stuff to show was the most difficult for me.

My first loco was from here (simple loco)
http://publish.uwo.ca/~gerard/trainz/tutorials/

Other things I tried was LOD and splines. Again it was fighting with the configs that was the toughest. I used other assets of the type I was working on for examples to use in my config.

The worst that can happen, if you are like me, would be smoke plumes coming from the screen :)

Basically the steps from creation to seeing your work is:
Create model, map texture, export, create config, test in surveyor.

Have fun,
Lenny

Yup, ask lots of questions and possibly find a buddy that'll walk you through steps you don't understand. Trial and error is a good thing, it'll teach you and tutorials are your best friend.

Take things one step at a time. Don't rush your work and, have fun working.

How's that? It's what I did.

Here are some tutorials;

Hi Maglevsx, I can't answer your question specifically, but just look at every tutorial you can find on the subject. Most tutorials never do exactly what you want, but you do learn a little something from everyone. It also pays to learn how to search forum posts using " " for example to hold phrases together. Finally look at other Trainz and gmax, 3ds max web sites for tutorials there.

You may also find my new web site (link below) a great help even though it's not officially running yet. It will take you to hundreds of tutorials.

On a more unpleasant note, are you aware of the Trainz Code of Conduct? (Link at top of page.) You signature is way oversizse and the signature police will eventually catch up with you unless you make it a maximum of 100 pixels high.

I learned through a little of everything...a couple tutorials, trial-and-error, and also IM-ing the mickey out of a friend. ;)

Can't say about scripting, but config writing isn't that hard...if you decide to weather CCP like I did. I wouldn't recommend trying to write a config from scratch unless you're some kinda scripting guru.

Oh, and remember not to compress your tga's! I forgot, compressed them, and spent a good several hours pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong... :hehe: :o

Thank you all for your help and tuts I will be making a new theard about how to scirpt and stuff and Sorry for the late, reply I went go karting and to my mates house....

Cheers~
~M~
