What is Trainz all about?

As an experienced TV advertiser would say:

"If you love trains, you don't need another excuse to try it. If you don't love them, you haven´t try TRAINZ yet."

Well, if you're going by the poor standard of advertising that we're forced to watch these days, they should say something like:

New and Improved Trainz!
Now 27.5% better than other leading Brands.
Now comes with self-cleaning brush, and emits a subtle, gentle aroma of Engine Oil every 30 seconds, to fill your room with that "Engine Shed" atmosphere.

Buy now, and get a plastic air horn absolutely free.
And pay by credit card and claim your free mystery gift.

Of course, if they really want it to sell well, then just make it the best sim out there, and if it isn't, don't pretend it is.

Trainz lets you create realistic, interactive, virtual worlds. :)

Still at it after almost 6 years so it must be more than a flash in the pan. When the original designers decided that Trainz would offer not just the trains but also the world in which they worked, they brought the game to a whole new level. Witness the cities, harbours, airports, even other planets that have been built. Bravo

I love Trainz because I can play with it better as a real model railroad.
I can all do what I want with Trains with TrainZ.

26 words but 2 times the word "TrainZ":udrool:

I'm not convinced that this as relevant as the other polls.

Most things people have said are just rearrangements of what's already been said, as will the posts that follow this one.

I suspect that this is just an exercise in community participation by Auran, as were the other polls to a lesser degree, which is at least something positive I suppose.

But surely there's more important feedback that Auran could make us of.

Smiley.

We don't even read these threads Smiley :p

Ok, we do - daily. The polls and the threads (about what you like, features etc) are a good way for us to "take the temperature" of the forum audience. From this we have been able to see just how varied our audience is - we have young teenagers and grandparents, drivers and world builders, model fans and proto fans, novices and experts, all enjoying the same hobby.

The common thread is that Trainz is first and foremost a creative world builder that appeals to people who like trains. Whilst it allows people to drive trains and play games, these are currently secondary benefits to the creation aspect. And then there's Barry and his boats ;)

So in a nutshell we know that whatever we do next, we will please some of the people, but not all the people :)

Btw - what important feedback do you think we're missing out on (beta testing comes later)...

Tony

Don't get me wrong.
It's good to see an Auran presence on the forums, and the polls so far have been a good piece of market research for you (as well as a community builder), but this poll seemed like it was the first thing you could think of, last thing at night before you went home.:hehe:

Btw - what important feedback do you think we're missing out on
Well, I won't say that a poll asking what percentages of people have problems with CMP would be a good idea, because you don't want to talk negative (and those problems should be fixed for TC3 CMP, let alone TRS2009+ CMP), but I think it would be a good idea to ask people what aspects of CMP they like, what aspects they find annoying, and what new features they would like, as long as people didn't talk about bugs, and only about what the features as they are meant to work.

Another hot topic IMO would be a built-in scenario builder.
I suspect that you wouldn't want to touch on that one though, and will continue to push on with rules and driver commands.

Another one would be custom size baseboards.
I would imagine a lot of people would like to be able to have the use of baseboards that were 360x720m and 720x360m as well as the standard 720x720m. I know I would.

Of course, these may not be things that you want to include in a new version of Trainz (or may not have the time/resources), and the phrase "Important Feedback" is very relative.

What I consider important feedback will be irrelevant to you if you've no interest in making changes in that area of the game.

On the plus side, if you've run out of "real" areas that you need feedback on, then you must have implemented everything the community has asked for over the last 6 years, in which case I'm very much looking forward to it's release. :p:hehe:

And then there's Barry and his boats
That's got to be quote of the week! lol :D

' TRAINZ. The means by which the modeller whos dream of a railway empire is larger than their available space, money supply or modelling skills can be realised. '
I went two words over the 25. Sorry.

MATE.

Trainz was my replacement for models trains. I wanted a big layout, but we never had the room for one. Trainz then kick started a creative spark I never had before.

Why I like Trainz

I like Trainz as it allows me to recreate lines that careless authorities have mercilessly closed. I love the meticulous detail one can achieve.

i'm always a bit of an odd one out, so don't take my perspective for any sort of market (unfortunately, i really really wish it was. maybe, occasionally, my wishes come true, but i wouldn't ask anyone to bet their rent money on it).

creative expression is the thing for me, that and exploring/learning are what life is all about. i also grew up around the railroad. my dad was telegrapher/towerman/clerk, mostly in rural stations and towns where his job involved all of those functions in the same 8 hour shift.

this was on what was then, and until quite recently, the sacramento devision of the southern pacific, where it crosses the sierra's at donner summit in northern california. 'the hill' as we called it, is where i grew up.

but aside from the railroad being the first and most enduring love of my life (i saw my first model railroad when i was only a year old. this was in 1949, and this guy had an all reley based working signalling system in his basement. been hooked ever since.)

but as i've said elsewhere, what i'm all about is the kind of world we could all have and be living in, and i see very small form factor guideway based transportation as potentially playing a major roll (along with NONcombustive energy sources like wind, solar and geothermal) in making that kind of world possible.

so that's what trainz is to me, both a gratification to play with and vicariously live in something resembling that kind of a world, and potentially yet one more way of expressing and demonstrating it.

i'm also reminded of a cartoon i saw in model railroader i think it was, a few years or decades, whenever it was, back, the caption being "wiring? what wiring, this is heaven!" of course that also applies to space and negotiating space for right of way. "selective compression? what selective compression? this is on the computer"

Rail Empire of my (and dad's) Dreams

Trainz gives me the chance to build that dream rail empire I always wanted to build and operate but never had the time or money to make real. My next project is to create my late father's dream pike he never had a chance to build. I recently found the track plan he drew in 1967. I think he would have loved Trainz too!

Have been able to make a route that depicts fairly accurately my old home town Rockhampton, in Queensland, in modern and 1960's versions. These have been made with TRS2004. Also have TRS2006 and TC. Have just bought EA Rail Simulator.
