What a rip off! Unbelievable....

A previous thread....Check post 5

He already knew there were some installation problems.
Only installed today, Say's it's a rip off, did not ask for help first, but quick enough to slate Auran for a dodgy product. Is this guy ever gonna be happy.
It's less than three weeks since he received the game and he is not satisfied. Ask the forum members for help before ranting about the product.

Please note:

The post by the OP is in full compliance with the first rule of Trainz::)

1. Blame Auran first.:)

Have fun,:)

You could also try to install TS10 into a different partition/folder/place on your hard disk and see if this makes any difference. As you can not uninstall yours with a corrupt uninstall info. But make sure, after installing fresh to run "Database repair" if this does not start automatically and again after patching to SP1.

Very important!!! as this might take anywhere between 15-30 minutes to do and it might appear initially not to be working. As you will not see any indication your PC might be doing something for several minutes. The indicator bar on the data repair starts up with 5 notches which remain still for up to 10 minutes until they start to increase. Just be patient and have a cup of coffee/tea or something stronger while waiting for the data base repair to finish.

I have 2 instances of TS10 running on one of my PCs, one instance for general playing with lots of imported CDPs, the other instance with minimal content for content creation/checking. This setup works OK for me.

As others have said, it is no good blowing your top here, I know how frustrating this can be if things do not work the way they are supposed to but there usually are ways to get you going.

First thing is your specs of your PC plus as others have pointed out, check and possibly up or downgrade your video card driver. I had issues with TS09 and my ATI card, an earlier version install of the driver did help me, why, I do not know.

Other thing is to check your TS10 configurations as there one can make blunders. Set everything to minimum and see how this goes. Also, try switching between OpenGL and DirectX and see if this makes any difference but I suspect your install is faulty (database especial), hence your errors showing as they do.

I hope this helps you .

Cheers

Just a little helpful hint, but did you turn off your anti-virus software before installing. This can sometimes corrupt installation.

Lots of really good and concerned advice here - would have thought more response re computer specs etc would be forthcomimg.........over the years I've struggled with many types of software but just get the head down and keep plugging away until I solve the problem.....and there always is a solution. Help from this forum and others has always been the way.The amount of advice and experience built up over many years in this forum is unmeasureable - it's there for you too.

Cheers,

Ian

Hey, think you have problems. I been waiting a month to get my copy, put disk in and i get "error, setup.exe files corupted get new copy".:'(

Guess I'm going to be waiting another month +.

You won't believe this one!
The game can not even be un-installed.

The assets don't seem to work, the game crashes when trying to repair said assets and even a file in the uninstaller seems corrupt.

This is not a problem with the game, this is a problem with your computer. It sounds like you've got a lot of corrupt files on your computer. Maybe the install didn't go right.

Worst case scenario is that your hard drive is in the process of failing. I'd back everything up that you hold dear.

As the saying goes, a poor workman always blames his tools...

Here's a few things you can try. If you can't uninstall, delete the TS2010 directory completely.
Important; then run a good registry cleaner. (properly clean out your registry). Then run Scandisk/Error checking. (or CHKDSK /F from DOS prompt). As mentioned above, you might have physical problems on your HDD. Eg; cross linked files, lost clusters, bad sectors, etc, etc. (if you can get hold of Norton's disk doctor and run that, even better). You can run NDD direct from the CD. - Then defrag your HDD.
Then check that you have the latest drivers for your video card.

You could also "turn off" all the unnecessary stuff/crap that you have loading up at startup. You don't need a lot of that crap running in the background...

I prefer to have Trainz on a different HDD than my boot up drive (C:\). If you have a second HDD in your PC, you could thoroughly check that first, then install Trainz onto that if you wished...

The problem is in your system somewhere, not TS2010.
Why do I know that? - Because my versions of TS2010 installed without a problem. (FIRST TIME). The patch/SP1 installed without any problems, ALSO first time. - Mind you, I did as Anglia suggests, some common sense PC housekeeping BEFORE I TRIED TO INSTALL...

Is TS2010 perfect? "NO". - Does it still need some patching? "YES". - Is it the ripoff that you are claiming? "NO". - Does it install flawlessly on a well maintained PC? "YES"
My TS2010 has been running fine for several weeks now. Even been able to run the full length of EMCL (great layout) without any problems... ("Speedtrees" is really starting to grow on me, and I think it adds a whole new "dimension" to Trainz's). Definitely a step forward in the right direction...

Auran aren't responsible for people properly maintaining their PC's with "common sense housekeeping". Unfortunately Auran seem to be all to often, the scape goat for peoples "ignorance or laziness".
I'm sure 2/3's of the install problems would disappear over night if everyone just applied some regular "common sense PC housekeeping" especially before they tried to do an install...
Cheers, Mac...

To answer Ish6, yes, it was a route I have been working on for Ts2009.

I tried to repair database and guess what?

17.000+ errors! is this fair? isn't this an assault?
shame on those sloppy "programmers". They better go to shepperd kangaroos.

Hi,

Do you still have that CDP, which contains your route or the folder?

Do you have the route back-up?

If yes, I'll continue and help you!!

(I had this issue once, with TR06, and everyone had me being a new this, a new that, I mean, i think someone suggested I should get skynet to help; But finally it took a brave soul, with one simple solution, and then the world was finally spinning again, LOL)

I just know your frustration -- !!

Just took a look at his profile...His occupation is "Software Engineer". Has he put this into practice.

I have to say, while not a professional software engineer, I have done some programming and have done more then my share of troubleshooting (both on my own computers and other people's) and out of date video drivers were the last thing I would have suspected could cause the kind of havoc that I got when I first installed TS2010. (Symptoms that, aside from the uninstall issue, match the problems the original poster has had.)

And for the record, the database repair procedures (as well as deleting assets.tdx and the backup) just made things worse. Updating the video drivers apparently got rid of that whole issue. Most of the other issues I've seen with Trainz since are minor bugs or possibly bugs in 3rd party content. :)

In any event, we'll have to wait till he posts again to see if he's resolved the problem yet.

I see your point on this about video drivers and the like, having done the same type of thing when writing software for a company i used to work for. I wasn't doubting his abilities. It was just a thought that he might have taken this route first before getting angry with the game.

I deleting assets.tdx and the backup) just made things worse...[\quote]

Hi,

With my encounters of trainz issues since 2002, deleting the assets, tdx has always fixed all issues, concerning the routes/layouts!

Also, I don't see how backing up your stuff can make things worse!!
Backing up your work should be the 11th commandment!!

Actually Ish, I would have thought backing up content would be the 1st FIRST commandment in the World of Trainz :hehe: and computers for that matter.

Guys,

Remeber, it seems that it's a route he created from TR09 ... He tried to installed it in TR10, so, I am assuimg that if he had TR09 running fine, then it's not a video or pc issue ... perhaps something when wrong in the transfer over!!

Ish

I had no problems bringing in my route first created in TRS2004 and then updated to TRS2006 and to TS2009 into TS2010.

I did, however, and this is the important part....

1) Backup my content before I did anything!

2) Spent about a week fixing downloads using the various tools available. These included Peter Vincent's wonderful utilities, Notepad, and Gimp. This took as, I've indicated in other posts, some time to do, but all was not lost.

For many of the "broken" assets, the repairs were/are quick and simple. A quick run of one of the utilities, a deletion of a texture.txt file, a quick edit of the Config.txt to remove a typo, or attachment point of some missing passengers if it was a station.

I think I averaged about 250-300 assets per day, perhaps more. As time went on, I got better at it and the process became quicker and easier.

I also spent time and repaired most of the Warnings. The easy ones were simple Config file repairs and utilities from Peter.

All in all, I am down to about 30 "broken" items out of the 147,000 plus I have in my local file, and about 3600 old PS objects and others with PM meshes instead of IM, or whatever the meshes are that produced the warnings.

3) I also ensured that all of my drivers are at the latest that my hardware can handle.

I known there are mixed feelings about this, and I agree there are some things that work and those that don't depending upon the hardware. This is what makes computer support so difficult, and why I always say "should" instead of will when recommending a fix. :)

4) Have lots of patience when dealing with Trainz.

It's amazing how many people push their computers when running this program. By this I mean not waiting for tasks to finish before doing something else. Perhaps I learned this from my old CP/M days and single-tasking systems, but when a program is running something criticle, like a database repair, I go off and do something else.

Watching the progress bar is like watching water boil, so rather than be tempted to touch my computer, I'll do something more important like take a nap, or more importantly practice the piano. :) I know that this process takes awhile so when I'm done doing my thing, I'll check my computer to see if the job has finished. If not, I'll do something else until it's finished.

5) When I get frustrated with the program, I walk away.

Yes, I do have snags, issues, and snafus. There are many here that I have not reported as problems, but have reported back to Auran for repairs in future versions. I've also used their experiences as a way to help others when I've resolved them myself. Like anything else in life, there are work arounds and ways around situations so that sometimes the worst things can be dealt with easily. Heck if you get hit in the head once too many times, you eventually learn to duck!

There are also some truly weird things that are still happening with TS2010. Part of it is my unfamiliarity with the software, and perhaps my way of doing things, but others are plain glitches that I am writing down.

6) Don't fight cityhall, and read other people's suggestions.

I come here to help others and to enjoy the company of the forums, I also keep in mind that there are plenty of other people here who are smarter than me, have been around here longer and have a lot more experience with life in general. I don't try to outsmart them with wise crack answers, or nasty comments. I read, try, and hopefully incorporate their experiences into mine. In many cases, other posters here have helped me, and I feel bad now not thanking them directly. I treat them with respect as I would expect from others.

7) Ask for help nicely.

There's no reason to get nasty and blame Auran, or get into a snit with the forum members. Granted Auran wrote the program, but getting nasty with them won't get anyone anywhere. The fact that the program works for a good number of people, means that isolated not working issues, are just that, and can be narrowed down to hardware or system problems.

8) Accepting the fact that nothing is perfect even in this so-called technologically perfect world.

I am amazed that this program can even run at all on the various platforms out there. Each computer system, even if it's closely related to any other one out there, is as different as mom's homemade cookies. Keep in mind that even though many people tested the program on many different hardware combinations, there are still going to be some flavors where things just won't work.

and most of all...

9) Remember it is only (ahem) a game even though it consumes a big part of everyone's life here including mine.

John

John, that post of yours should be copied and made a sticky in every forum within these forums :Y:

Well said

Hi John,

I think your item 4 is the problem with lots of people trying to run any version of Trianz.

Cheers,
Bill69

Well it would have been helpful if the OP had stated if he downloaded the game or installed the box version. It seems to me that his files got corrupted when he downloaded them and that's how he has a corrupt installation. But I am guessing, seeing as theirs not that much information to go on from the OP.
