Video & audio editing

StorkNest

Stop that, its just silly
Been looking at software for recording video and editing after.
Normally I used free programs like FRAPs & similar, edited in Windows Movie Maker.
However due the limitations on these, I am considering something that allows unlimited video, possibly adding audio commentary afterward. The second part I am not sure of, WMM allows adding a music file but nothing stands out for adding voice unless that gets recorded as a music file.
Also not sure if anything special is needed for HD.
Thanks for anything, most suggestions I get elsewhere involve expensive programs.

1 - Which are the free programs that allow unlimited (no time limit) video?
2A - How do you add audio after the video is recorded, WMM treating it as a music file or something else?
2B - What if you record a video with audio then want to add voice dialog later in addition? Does the voice replace existing audio or does a free program allow having both?

1. I'm not sure of any others, but DVDVideoSoft have 'Free Screen Recorder', however unfortunately the current build does not record sound at the moment.
2a. WMM will treat it as a music file and you can add it in to the video.
2b. Movie Maker will allow dialogue to be included with the existing video footage.

WMM and Fraps are perfectly legitimate for making these features. As far as unlimited recording time with an available free software, I'm not sure of any. Many people use Bandicam, (bandicam.com), which is like Fraps but the recording time limit is 10 minutes (instead of 30 seconds or whatever Fraps' is).
As long as your computer has a microphone, WMM is perfectly fine for using recordings. If you wish to add a mic recording and still keep the original sound at the same time, it's perfectly feasible. It should be the same as adding music, and I've done that in several of my videos.

If you have an NVidia card, such as something in the 600-series or up, you can use the built-in Shadow Play which does the same thing except makes use of your hardware for faster and smoother recording.

Now it's nice to be able to edit unlimited movies, however, keep in mind the size of the video files. Even MP4 videos can be quite large making them difficult to edit and manipulate. Your best bet is to produce videos in smaller chunks then stitch them together later on using a video editor such as the above mentioned Windows Movie Maker, Pinnacle Studio, or some other video editing program.

Hi,

There are two programmes I use:-

Nero and Magic.
Both have the ability to edit the video and add/replace audio, but they do have different details. About now, both are having new versions advertised, so you may be able to get a deal.

Thanks, man I asked this on a few other forums and nobody gave such easy answers.

I will need unlimited video, possibly one or two other things since I will get a new system soon. This one is soon to die from how it works. I just discovered Wondows 8 has nothing like Works and Office went to monthly & annual subscriptions, now I need a new office suite and am looking at the free ones out there. Hopefully the new Essentials 2012 works.

600, haha, maybe on the new comp but not this one! :D

Back again!

Try OpenOffice.
It offers very similar functionality to MS Office and is available for Windows and Linux.
Will read/write office compatible documents.

It's also free....
