Unable to register Trainz URL registry key

hi, yes i do.but,, when i ckcked on the forum link i got this:

stationfried, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

I quote from one of the referred to pages:

'Then the first time you start trs as per the sp1 install instructions again right click and select "Run as Administrator".

This is also how you should install other "older (legacy) programs" in Vista so as to avoid problems latter'

This is WRONG! Legacy programs in Vista work perfectly well if they're coded properly through the use of virtualization (look it up on Google). Only poorly coded legacy programs which (i) confuse programs with user data, and (ii) write to obscure folders and registry branches outside those in Windows designer guidelines, OR (iii) use obscure routines to write files and registry keys instead of using the operating system and the usual environmental variables.

Thus it's usually best with legacy software to install as 'administrator' BUT then to run first time as a user, which sets up data folders in the user AppData folder.

Still even MSFT admit sometimes it's necessary to run legacy stuff with elevated privileges, and this must be one of the times when that is so . Thanks muchly for the pointer, people!

Unfortunately with the troubles at Auran we're unlikely ever to see this stuff patched for Vista so we have to make the best of it!

Thanks again.

Not really, some of us don't jump straight on the "NEW!!! Got to have that" bandwagon, you'll find a lot of us have stuck with XP rather than donate more hard earned cash
to B. Gates for another OS that has not been de-bugged or designed properly. :p

So far, r-clicking on the desktop shortcut to TRS2006 and selecting 'Run as administrator' seems to have cleared the error and I can now connect to the content manager thingie. Interestingly that seems to have selected another set of configuration options (for screen size and so on) which are in a different area (registry/file system?). will this solve the issues with Vista? Seems like I can now save layout changes.
