ugly trains

The GG1 is well, unique. Personally I think it looks nice, but i do admit its stylized lines take some getting used to. In the overall picture of the engine, they look nice, but the ends do look kinda weird with their notches in the sides.

Now the FA-1, there's something interesting. They are pretty good looking, but i've always thought they looked like a kitbash of a PA-1 by a modeller with limited space for a 6-axle engine (Which, in fact, they were, they were 4-axle mods of the PA-1 for freight) they look severely squashed down. I've heard Diehard ALCo fans say they don't like them. like the GG-1, their lines take some getting used to.

just a thought.

Hmm. Certainly some interesting points. I guess that if you look at them next to a PA, they do look a bit squashed. :hehe:

There doesn't appear to be anything ugly about the FA-1 and this coming from somebody who knows nothing about US locos. The GG1 is a bit odd looking as it's a very different layout to European electrics.

When I was searching for some pics of the FA-1, this came up

Is this a loco only the disigner could love?

Edit - I just realised what it is this loco reminds me of, it's Fender from Futurama...

I have to say that this is the first time I've ever heard both the FA and the GG1 being called ugly... let alone on the same page of a thread.

And hey! Alleghany isn't ugly! It's just brutish... and well worn.

That's interesting all right, never thought I'd even hear them mentioned in a discussion of ugly locos.

And no, Alleghenies (or Blue Ridges as in this photo) are far from ugly. It was a reply to his scary loco comment.

It was a matter of opinion, but i guess i should've picked that Milwaukee Road loco on my TRS 2006 that looks like a tractor on rails.:)

Ah right. Blue Ridge on the Verginian. I know you said it isn't ugly, and I'm sorry. :o :)

Alright. I'm never one to call a GG1 ugly, but that chopped one is a sore sight. What monster would do such a terrible thing!

Awe, what a cutie! I could just use that little switcher all day, but the king of all uglies something even the P30CH can't compare to is this, ugly monster. Good unit, but horrible scheme....I give you Barfatron. BNSF's barf bot.

BNSF 9647 is uglier than burnt toast and I feel sorry for the former BN SD70MAC paired with him.

UP, that's a SW7RM. They were rebuilt with larger resistor grids and dynamic braking.

Of this much I am aware. Still, I don't think that it improves the appearance... at all. This is however just my opinion.

Vomit bonnet! :hehe:

What is that?! An RDC decked out with a snow shovel and jet engine?
That is the Jet Rail Diesel Car. In the final years of the New York Central before the merger with the Pennsylvania Railroad into Penn Central, the NYC was trying to figure out how to improve passenger travel thus the Jet Rail Diesel Car was born. The car is NYC M-497 and was equipped with a jet engine and a front end from an F7A cab unit. The rail diesel car had its jet engine and F7A front removed before the merger (As I recall hearing from retired PC former NYC employees.) and the rail diesel car itself was scrapped in the eighties. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-497_Black_Beetle
There's more info on her there.

Doesn't look much like an F7A from this side of the pond; more like a custom made wrap-around in front of the cab.
