I personally love the U4a, one of my favourite CNR (1 or 2) and Canadian steamers (4 or 5), I particularly loved it on 1939 Royal Train Blue.Do you think the CN U4a's look ugly? 'Cause they look like someone fused a steam loco and an F7 diesel loco together.

Probably a art decco thingy ... to make it look spiffy, and modern ... a precursor to Thomas, where they put faces and eyeballs on a twain, and a mouth that made it look like the loco was saying: "Doahhhhh" !
