TUME’s Simulation of “The Milwaukee Road”

Hallo,

here some further screens about the progress building Milwaukee Road's Hanford Branch.
Unfortunately, the Hand of God Utility (HOG) does not create sharp rock edges at the cliffs by itself and so the terrain surface looks different to the satellite maps provided by Google an USGS. Therefore the whole rocky slops needs to be modified and additionally formed by hand to get the simulation closer to the real landscape. This modification now has been done at the huge rock cliffs west of the Hanford Complex.

Indeed very nice work. Your route played a big role in getting me to buy 010, I have a fascination with the Milwaukee lines west for some reason.

First results of my new grass and sagebrush cover splines

Hallo,

here comes the latest results of my work at the Milwaukee Road Othello – Kittitas.
Its all “Sagebrush – Country” west of Othello all the way down to Beverly into the Columbia River Valley and at its other side up via Doris to Boylston and further to Renslow situated just a little east of Kittitas. The same vegetation grows up all the way down the Hanford Branch from Beverly beside the Columbia River.

After the development of a set of new ground textures suitable especially for this landscape, I spent the last weeks testing several ways to create nice grass and bush ground cover objects. This ground cover had to provide a nice looking area as well as a suitable performance besides indicating as much 3d ground cover objects as possible. LOD single objects created a very nice looking landscape, but slowed down the performance as the CPU had too much objects to handle. Finally I built as much LOD single grass and bush objects into the route that the whole simulation crashed down. Yes, that is possible :-) But again, the landscape looked fantastic. Therefore I stepped back to LOD splines. The challenge about any ground cover objects is that it has to match to the ground texture. Also very important is the changeover when the 3d pieces disappear in the distance to the “ground texture only terrain”.
This especially requires a suitable texture creation for the LOD ground cover splines, per haps including a smooth changeover of the texture from LOD level to LOD level to get the low detail levels close to the appearance of the ground texture in the distance to prevent sharp changeovers.
This is something I still have to do at my LOD ground cover splines - because if you check the screens you still can see a little changeover between the foreground with the 3d cover and the background without the splines. Especially the 3d pieces at the last LOD level still appears a little bit too dark in comparison to the ground. Therefore I will have to turn the material for the lower LOD levels a bit more bright as it is now.

Eventually I think the way I have selected opens the possibility to create quite realistic looking landscapes including a lot of 3d vegetation not only close beside the rails.

Please see the following screens also in comparison to some of my older screens posted here before.

In the times before the Manhattan Project, Milwaukee Roads Hanford Branch was called “Sagebrush Anny”. Now this name can be mirrored in Trainz too.

Anny suggestions and critics are very welcome.

Now that is amazing! I had to check those screens twice to make sure whether they were real or from trainz....great work! :D

-I don't think i need to suggest anything and im not going to be a critic. Looks like to me you have everything handled! great works and there's tons of win here!
-I am liking everything in all the shots esp. this one:

-I am getting very close to a more dead area in my route now i will study these photos and see if i can get my desert half as good as yours! keep up the great work!

Latest results of the grass and bush cover spline test

Hallo,

now some screens indicating the latest results of the grass and bush cover spline test from around Beverly, Wa. The time has been set up to 17:00 and this proves the alpha channel of the normal maps really prevents the unwanted light reflection at the planes of the spline mesh – especially in the morning and evening time. Still the track, the catanery as well as the HV poles has such reflection looking quite unnatural. Therefore this splines will have to be improved in the near future.

I created the Beverly Bridge for this route back in 2005 before I discontinued working at the Milwaukee Road Othello – Kittitas Route to put forward in favour of the Milwaukee Road Avery – Drexel Route. The bridge as it is now is a trackside object to be clicked onto the track. I chose this way for an easy positioning. The mesh contains more than 13.000 polygons and will have to be redesigned to benefit from the possibilities of TS2010.

Back in the middle 50's, the evening Olympian Hiawatha led by Bi-Polar EP2 #E1 crosses the Columbia River at the Beverly Bridge. The mighty slope bordering the Sentinel Gap to the west appears in the background. This great scene can be seen even in our days, but unfortunately without the Rail Road.

was switch motors in use on this line and how many trains ran on this line

hello i want to know if the milw used switch motors on this line and how many trains a day run on this line thanks.

is the beta going to come out or not, I just want an answer to that

Wow could you be more rude? First Ben and now Tume. Relax when they decide to release their stuff they will. Demanding timeframes is rude and frankly if I was the one releasing it the timeframe would expand for each one of these demands.

My apologies to both fantastic creators but im just a guy who likes answers, not whens it going to be done answers but is it still in the works answers

what was the point of that?

dude, we get it. Tume's takin' his time. The Othello-Kittias route takes priority and that's that. He's never promised a release date, only that a beta might come out at some point. the engine is still in re-work, having been built to TRS06 but needing to be converted to 09/10.

Man, if the Trainz community had some patience, we'd be far better off.
