TRS22 PE the ecstasy and agony

What a mess is this... :-/ The compatibility of the routes created in all these versions and variants across is one big unknown to me. Some explaining table would be really useful....

If TRS22 PE had come with S2.0 and HD terrain editing, I would have been very tempted to buy to see what is the latest on offer. As N3V seem determined to keep retail customers permanently off the pace, I'll probably wait for a discounted TRS22 PE.

The more N3V try to twist my arm to get a subscription, the more I'm likely to resist :)

Mind you Dovetail are hoping to sell me TSW4 when the dust has hardly settled on TSW3. They are likely to be no more successful than N3V.

HD Terrain (editing/painting/creation/convertion/etc) is in the latest official TrainzPlus release, and is not in beta :)

Regards
Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question but if HD Terrain and TRS22PE are received well enough by users, is there any possibility of HD Terrain being ported over to TRS22PE in a future update?

"Oh what a tangled web they weave, when the tracks all deceive" with apologies to Walter Scott for a poor misappropriation but I couldn't resist.
With all the many different versions being worked on it IS difficult to remember which track goes where without a detailed chart. And even then as things change and mutate over the long gestation period, a static chart might still not be good enough.

The present graphics serve the hobby well. No doubt the new processes are worthwhile. But trying to market for maximum profit with a very poor clarity of purpose is not a good strategy. That has happened before and multiple clarifications, over time were needed. Once again the same situation exists with multiple opinions about the products. When will they learn?

Why is there no Platinum Edition upgrade pricing for long-time, loyal customers?

There are more overlapping versions & features than ever and the value is murky IMO. I paid $70 for TRS 22 in the Spring of 2022, and now I'm being asked to pay that much again for a small number of incremental Platinum Edition features (basically surveyor 2 and bundled items).

I already bought TRS22 (probably should have waited!), so even with the discount at $62, It doesn't seem worth it for me. I think I'll just wait for TRS25. By then, I'll have a better computer that can better handle all these new resource-intensive features. :)

I'll probably get it but I DON'T WANT the Plus version at all, although if I have to have it I won't be using it.
I hope I can separate the 2 at the time I go to download it. If I read the guff on the store correctly, If I but 22PE before Oct 1 I get Plus Standard as well. Looks like I may have to send a message to the help desk about it before I jump in.

If you have the plus subscription as part of this deal, you don’t have to download the plus version. The plus version is separate from the retail version.

Personally, I think it is a great offer. I’ve been doing the plus standard subscription and I get a free update for the retail version. I think that is awesome! Now my retail version has more routes and S2.0. I have both retail and plus versions installed.

Trainz 22 and PE should have the same compatibility for routes, just different abilities.

I own the ordinary nonplussed retail version of TRS22, - which I suppose now is going to get called legacy TRS22. I've looked at the Platinum version and there's nothing there that I want. Remember that should you accept either version of +Plus to try it out and then drop your subscription your +Plus install will no longer work and you will have to manually install the ordinary retail version of TRS22 and set everything up again.
Surveyor 2.0 or New World Builder as N3V is now calling it might be wonderful to some Trainz folk, but it's not wonderful to anyone like myself who has eyesight issues or a neurodivergent disability. I pointed this out to the Trainz Team, but they didn't seem to care all that much.

You haven’t got anything for free, you’ve been effectively buying the latest version of Trainz every year.

As long as the dollars roll in then I suspect never

I share your agony @amigacooke and also your dismay at the fact that Trainz Plus is now just a superior product. Contrary to what I am sure the intention is, this is actually putting me off spending any money at all. Last year I broke my own rules out of curiosity and took out one month's subscription to have a look at surveyor 2.0. I was very impressed and thought that once it made it's way into a fully purchaseable version, and that version came down somewhat from it's initial price, that I may well make a purchase. Well now S2.0 is indeed available in TS22PE, but now I want the HD terrain too. Again, I am NOT purchasing a subscription service so now I will wait until I can buy a full version of Trainz containing both S2.0 and HD terrain.

If the developers want to make a sale here, they'd be best off not publicising any great new features only available in Trainz Plus. 😁

Many new features are fleshed out in Trainz-plus first before they're passed down. In other words, we get to break the bottles open and taste the new features first then once the bugs have been mostly worked out, it gets passed down the line, so hold off on the HD terrain for a while and let the bugs get completely (well mostly) worked out. This process is same with the UDS and now Surveyor 2.0, which I think still needs a lot more work especially on the interface front but it's still usable.

Right. Exactly. I'll hold off for now. As I say, this kind of works against the developers if I keep "holding off" until the next big feature gets implemented into a full purchaseable release though. While I'm "holding off" they're not getting any of my money. 🤷‍♂️

When a new retail version came out, I used to feel the pressure to get hold of the latest and greatest (at least at the point of release). Now it appears it's N3V policy to hold back a feature from the retail version (in this case HD terrain) to differentiate that product from Trainz+. So that pressure is largely gone. My immediate reaction is to wait, either for a discounted retail version, or a regional TRS22 PE version (also ideally discounted) :)

As a retail version buyer I can at no time keep up with the front runners, so why bother to try. Like Weevil, I'm disincentivised.

It does, but then again maybe it'll force some necessary changes. Honestly, I feel the product line break out is not only just confusing, but also is like a class-structure. I'm lucky I can afford Plus right now, but what happens in the future should my government decide that us retirees and disabled aren't worth a penny and cut our benefits? I won't be able to afford the luxury and will lose any work I've done on my routes while using Plus. I'm not being sarcastic here; I'm serious. With inflation and the winter fuel prices skyrocketing, that extra bit we come up with annually or monthly can add up pretty quick and be better put elsewhere where it's needed. Priorities are priorities especially when it comes to living.

The code base they use has all the features embedded so that based on subscription level it's your user account that turns these on. Instead of doing that, N3V should offer either a subscription version or a full version of everything to everyone. The price may be high, but it is what it is since most games these days are in the same ballpark. Instead of turning on the features based on subscription, the user can pick and choose which features he/she wants by choosing the level of the program.

There could be an "Easy Mode". This has Classic Surveyor only, access to the DLS and everything else.
"Advance Mode" has all features enabled just like Plus does, and finally there's Driver-only mode.

Driver-only mode. There can be a simple session editor and access to the DLS but nothing complex as we have now. This is great for beginners and for those who just want to drive trains. There are many new users who come into the forums thoroughly confused and overwhelmed. Unlike the rest of us who have weathered the advancements since the early days, these people in many instances are walking into a minefield of advanced features. We see this day in and day out with posts with "Help! I don't know how to do this, or all I wanted to do is drive trains." People shouldn't need a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science and Engineering to run a train simulator. Games are supposed to be fun and not work.

The advantages of this are there are fewer support requests from users, the product skew is easier to manage and overall, less confusion even from long time users.
