TRS22 PE the ecstasy and agony

Very pleased to see that surveyor 2 is included, then very disappointed to see that apparently HD terrain is not. I thought that HD terrain was in a ‘release’ state now, so seems a bit odd to decouple one from the other.

If HD terrain was included then what reason would there be to buy a membership?

Depends on how you look at it. None of the retail versions of Trainz 22 have HD Terrain, though PE has S2.0. If you buy PE during the time frame, you get a year's worth of Plus Standard for free, or subscribe/renew a subscription during the deal, you get PE for free. Thus you would also get HD Terrain for a year.

All the exciing upcoming features like TLR etc. Subscription was originally flagged as an alternative option, now it's being framed as a superior option.
Perhaps, but remember, Trainz + is still mostly, to use Tony's words, "in Phased Development"™. So while you get new features first, they are often not ready to use in a production workflow such as building routes. I signed up for a year in December 2021 to get TRS22 forever and let the membership lapse after a year. After 8 months, I activated it to see HD terrain and TLR progress but I was planning on letting it go again. The new deal of buying TRS22PE and getting Trainz + for a year which of course includes a 365 day FCT sounds like a good enough deal to me.

Yep, but if you can't make routes to the latest Trainz standard using the latest Trainz retail product, then something is inadequate to me.

I’m not sure we can call HD Terrain a standard yet. I would not recommend all routes be built in HD Terrain. That is simply file size.

I don’t follow Trainz as closely as I used to, but isn’t it the case that TRS22 can now run HD terrain routes as a standard feature?

Both retail versions of Trainz 22 can run HD Terrain routes. I don’t know anything HD is ready for download and the package file can not be made for large routes as the file sizes are too large. I still think it is a work in progress. I like the features, but wouldn’t think of it as something as a standard, that every route should be yet.

TRS22 retail has been given an update so that HD terrain-created routes can be run but not altered. HD and TLR are still in beta stages at present. If you have TRS22 retail then that is the official latest standard, It does not have the ability to use HD and TLR features, it can only run HD-created routes.

Not quite yet, TRS22 SP2 has the ability to load an HD route using what is called HD compatibility mode. The resolution displayed is less than HD terrain but visually better looking than the 5m grid size. As per N3V, saving the route converts it to a 5m grid route.

Hi All
As has been the case since we introduced the TrainzPlus/Gold subscriptions, new features are released first for TrainzPlus and then at a later date as part of future retail versions of Trainz. As happened with TRS19, and the TRS19 Platinum Edition, we have released the TRS22 Platinum Edition which includes the Surveyor 2.0 feature.

As HD Terrain has only just been released to TrainzPlus/Gold members, it won't be released for retail until sometime in the future.

And to confirm, TRS22 SP2 does have the ability to load HD Terrain routes. However to edit these routes, using HD Terrain, you would need to use a TrainzPlus version of Trainz. OTOH you can still convert HD Terrain routes back to classic terrain options if you so wish, with the relevant loss of detail to terrain and textures.

Regards

So creating HD routes is still only possible in Trainz+ beta?

Yes, attempting to edit the route in TRS22 SP2 which is the "Standard Edition" to use N3V terminology is greeted with an error saying editing of the route layer is not allowed. This also includes ground textures as well as they are part of the route layer structure. Now I do not know if TRS22PE since it includes Surveyor 2.0 is different. But in Trainz Plus Surveyor 2.0 worked with normal terrain long before HD terrain was added.

Now is the Surveyor 2.0 in TRS22PE the same version as is in Trainz Plus or is it a Lite version with features missing? I did read where that the Trainz Plus Surveyor 2.0 has a more extensive selection of Scrapebook items included. Oh, and since the PE features are activated by my having an active subscription which I receive as part of the purchase of TRS22PE, will those features stop working when I let the subscription lapse? Will I be left with just TRS22 Standard Edition at that point?

If you buy PE, you keep PE including S2.0. HD terrain editing is only while you have a Plus Subscription for now. Not sure about scrapbook.

HD Terrain (editing/painting/creation/convertion/etc) is in the latest official TrainzPlus release, and is not in beta :)

An official confirmation. Many thanks Zec.

It does, to my mind, confirms that N3V is not offering Trainz+ as an alternative to TRS22 PE anymore, but as a superior product. Shame. Maybe those who choose the retail version will be able to edit HD terrain in S2 in TRS24/25.
