TransDem - Where Can I Get USA Vector Maps?

I am just starting on TransDem. I am interested in modeling a short stretch of sightseeing railroad in Western Maryland. Following the manual, I have gotten Dems from USGS NED and raster maps from MSR.

From Gisa's excellent tutorial I have learned about CanVec which has vector maps for all of Canada, but I have been unable to find a similar site or sites for US vector maps. Maybe I'm overlooking something-maybe the vector maps are buried in the USGS content somewhere, but I can't find them.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Well, the Japanese link points to the ASTER satellite DEM data.

FloridaGuy is looking for map data in vector format. USGS produced a series called "DLG" (Digital Line Graph) 10 years ago. It might be available in ESRI shp format nowadays but I would have to look myself.

Sure, but USGS DLG is 1:24,000! National Atlas or TIGER are in a much smaller scale. The drawback with DLG is its SDTS format.

I succeeded with USGS DLG now and will write down instructions. It's a bit tedious, though. .shp format did not work, coordinates wrong and boundaries not removed. Hence it's back to SDTS and conversion to .dxf.

The Canadians are far ahead here, I'm afraid.

Thanks PFX. I went to their site this morning. It looks like it has some promise but when I tried to download a tile I got a 'Site not found' error message. The site was probably down for maintenance. I'll try again later.

Are you trying to model the Western Maryland from Cumberland to Frostburg, MD? There's already 2 routes released with that on it, one route also has the WM (now Durbin and Greenbrier Valley) through Elkins, WV toward Spruce, WV.

@ Geophil - I've managed to create a DEM map for my intended route but I can't seem to get the vector data onto it. I created the DEM using data from the Ordnance Survey http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/opendata/ which worked just fine.

I've also downloaded what I thought would be the correct data to the tutorials I've been following, from the same site. Namely the ESRI Shape files under the OS Vectormap District files that corresspond to the same areas but I'm unable to find the appropriate file using TransDEM to use. Have I made a fundamental mistake somewhere?

Thanks.

I have to say I have not played with O/S vector data yet, I have to figure that out myself. Cannot promise success but will give it a try.

As this is getting off-topic here (UK instead of US) I suggest to continue O/S matters in the TransDEM forum.
