Just thought I'd brush the dust off this thread with an announcement...

I've been working with BidMod for a few weeks now to create a set of UK tramway speed signs, and the first instalment is now complete. There are versions with a post and without, both in left and right hand variants. The versions without post come in a variety of offsets (1.75, 2 & 2.5m) and are located a little forward of the origin in G-Max so as to 'clip' to the front of posts by Silversmith, Motorman1066 and others. A 'galvanised' bracket is provided to take up any gap due to differences in pole diameter.

Here are a few pics of some installed on Westhaven Trams...

The last one also features my first complete solo G-Max creation - the sculpture in the background.

Before I release these, I would like one or two folks to give them a bit of a test to make sure I haven't messed up anything, so drop me a pm or post here if you're interested...

Maybe a vacuum might be better - it's been hiding in the back for a while.

Those are really good shots there. The textures for those signs are looking good too.

If people are wondering what's coming next from BidMod Carriage and Wagon, they'll need to wait a few more weeks longer. Something is happening behind the scenes though, but life has higher priority at the moment.

BidMod.

Hi Paul
Just to let you know that i will be happy to test out your map if you still want to have it tested out and of course if you still need someone.
You can send me a private message or i can send you my e-mail address.

I'm looking for people to test out the speed signs at the moment. The route is Westhaven Trams (on the DLS), which I'm working on an extension to at the moment. I'll bear your offer in mind when I'm ready for testing - thanks!

Advice, please, on folding/sliding tramcar doors........

.........relating to double ended, double deck types.

From many, many pics and videos, I have been unable to ascertain whether trams that had them, operated with the folding doors at the rear entry/exit end always open. Most "shots" indicate that they did.

Seems to me that opening closing at every stop would create a lot of "wear and tear".

Then, would the conductor always have to be in position to control them with passenger safety in mind?

Thirdly, emergency evacuation of the 'car if means of operation of the door mechanism, electric or air, was faulty?

I think I may have answered my own query but would appreciate comments.

Within Trainz, andi06's Tram Reverser asset caters for fixed bow-collector and trolley pole stub termini reversing (and no need to "Flip over" seats!!) and lazy old me is "finking to 'imself" = no need to install two lots of operating doors, model can have front door closed and rear open.

Regards, Alan

Well the trams in Glasgow that had closing doors only closed the one at the driver's end the other was continually left open. I suppose it wasn't always practical for a conductor to speed about and get down stairs for every stop as they were so close (too close I think). However wheI i visited Blackpool I noticed the conductor closing and opening the passenger doors. However there were 2 conductors on board.

Hi, Bobby,

Well, I knew I could go to bed last night with the feeling that you would be posting an "early morning reply";)
It was Glasgow pics and vids that made me wonder, seeing the Coronations and Cunarders with passengers leaping on and off at traffic lights and whilst the tram was actually moving, at times with reckless disregard for their own safety! ( is the opposite of reckless, reckful?)
I had not spotted a situation showing the ex-Liverpool 'cars in such a way that I could judge.

Thank you for supplying the info I need at the moment, for my current project, a Coronation into which I hope to bring some of andi06's PSV assets.

At some time in the future, I shall wade through my London and Leeds vids/pics to check out the Feltham, LCC No1, Horsfield and Middleton Bogey.

Regards, Alan.

Silversmith - It's really good to hear you're back onto tram building. I look forward with anticipation....

On another note, I've been busy myself with something that may interest those of a tramway persuasion. Andi06 has very kindly let me have a play with his G-Max files for his tram crossings, and I've fathomed out enough G-Max to allow me to produce new configurations. I've started with an absolute monster (18 attached tracks, and now reduced to 10 attached roads). It's intended for controlling lights where a tramway along one multiple lane road has a junction with another tramway on a multi-lane road. It can also be used just for large intersections without trams. It accommodates up to 3 lanes of traffic, one of which can be a left turn lane, and trams running in any of these lanes. Depending on which nodes are connected, traffic parallel to and/or across the traffic can be stopped. Hopefully the following pictures should illustrate a little better...

Screen_077-1.jpg

The crossing.

Screen_078-1.jpg

The wiring. This is a fairly complex junction - most would be simpler.

Screen_079.jpg

The finished junction. Trams in any direction will stop all traffic.

I also plan to do a number of single ended variants for one way streets, T-junctions, and also to allow opposing traffic to be triggered separately (e.g. if trams only cross one carriageway, or to allow right turning traffic).

At the moment, I am customising most of these items for left hand roads, as the additional attachment points for right hand roads make the items almost unusable. I will do some RH variants if there is any demand - please let me know. I'm also prepared to consider doing requests for specific attachment layouts - please don't ask for major mesh changes, as I'm really not up to it.

Tramway "Multi Junctions"

Hi, Paul,
I imagine that anyone wishing to create London tram routes will be knocking at your door, ringing your bell or whatever as they approach the six way junction at 'Elephant and Castle';).

Of course London was not the only place that had complicated track work junctions as the locality route maps indicate. Sometimes it seems that in city centres, no matter where you stood, there was always a tram, or trackwork, in sight.

Regards, Alan

Hi Alan,

Did you have any luck finding the Glasgow Standard mesh, or is that a backburner project?

(Without committing to anything), I have plans (and photos) to create a skin for the Paisley tramcar (sans roof) to look like LCC 106 (which would compliment any more LCC trams) and Southampton 45, but it's sometimes tricky to get the colour right because (a) TRS tends to display slightly lighter colours than those specified and (b) I'm colourblind, which is why I'm still working on Chesterfield 7 (though it's been hidden behind other stuff for quite a while).

If someone could suggest good RBG values that would be useful though, and speed the process up considerably (and increase the accuracy of the finished skin), but I can get them from the photos (this is how I got Leeds 180 to look a darker red than MW's skin).

Regards,
BidMod.

Just as a postscript to Alan's comment about the vids of Glasgow trams and people hopping on and off. So true in fact. Glasgow pedestrians were like cats with 9 lives. Running after tram cars and leaping off and on them was a regular thing and no-one thought it unusual. Did it myself often. As much as I am fortunate to have travelled on that lone single decker left in the fleet the Coronation was the daddy of them all and people actually did let a standard, etc go by if the Coronation coming was going their way. They were comfortable (could read a paper at speed unlike the shooglies at speed!), subdued lighting, heated. As a boy I once made up a shell of a Coronation and put it over a model rail engine on my Hornby Dublo layout.

I now have the name of a particular individual at the city Transport Museum as he may be more interested in me using direct contact when this layout is finished. When I wrote to the Culture & Leisure Services Dept all I got was an acknowledgement postcard that soemone would get back to me. Oh yeh. So I went into the Musuem and asked who was repsonsible for the tram side of exhibits. After all what I am doing is rather unique and pertains to something that was deeply part of Glasgow which seen a quarter of a million turning out for the last tram procession. It's aw wonder the Glaswegians didn't storm the City Chambers on losing their well loved trams!

Now I'm getting a boyhood dream of driving trams as the beggars took them away before I could fulfill it! Thanks Auran.

Hi Steve,

Check out the Screenshots forum for more details on how to post pictures, but here's a quick overview.

Convert your screen capture to a smaller format such as a jpg (JPEG). You need to resize it so it will fit in the forum. I recommend something like 480 x 360, which fits the screen nicely. Auran has guidelines for image sizes, and if they're too big, they'll resize them or delete them.

Once that's done, you then need to host the pictures on a site such as Photobucket, Imageshack, etc.

These sites will give you the code for posting the images in the forum message so you do is copy the code and then paste it into your message.

Hope this helps,

John
