TRS 22 Trainz Plus stand alone now won''t start at all -- no message, no nothing -- just pointer for a second and then nothing. Re-installed 22. Have TRS 19 and it will run. TRS 22 had run fine. ( membership up to date and has been for a while. )

When Plus is first installed, it runs a DBR like all Trainz versions. The unfortunate part is it doesn't always display the DBR progress bar. I have a feeling it was running a DBR when you started as it did during the beta version.

How to tell.

When you start up Plus, run it in a window.
Click on the Launcher and then click on Show Client logs.

This will display the progress of what's running and you'll see the validating content and some errors related to DLC not having the same cached version you already have installed.

When this completes it'll say something like setting session cookie.

thank you. i'll do this. but, you understand that i specified that i had plus 22 working on my pc and nothing's changed except that it won't run. plus 19 runs fine.

Yes, I understand that. Everything is locked while the DBR is running and the program doesn't appear to open up even though the DBR is running in the background.

If this is still occurring after the DBR, you check your antivirus and ensure it's not preventing Plus from running.

LOL. i've been doing tranz for almost as long as you, starting with the original. yeah, anti-virus. but, this feels more like the 90's when i'd get an exe virus. like, nothing from the exe. and, of course every other exe runs, including all the older trainz.

my intuition is to buy on steam and use steam and see if it runs on that. but, that's kind of more than this is worth. i'll still get it to work, but i bought 'railroader' last month.

Some people like the Steam versions.

With TRS22, the asset file format has changed. Back in the olden days, the files were there and completely accessible including in TRS19, although they are in a Trainz readable format. Today, we still install the assets as CDPs but the content gets installed and compressed into .tzarc files. A .tzarc is an old archive format similar to zip and has been around for ages. Unlike before, assets are decompressed on the fly and the antivirus programs go nuts every time the files are accessed and have been known to damage content. By excluding the data folder and also the program, this prevents the damage that can be caused by the antivirus programs.

It's been close to 30 years since I've run across an infected program and that wasn't even on my system. Maybe I've been lucky. The chances of a Trainz asset having malware in it is pretty rare. In all the years I've used Trainz, I've never seen any, besides they made up of images and text files, and the images aren't jpegs or png files usually and are the oft forgotten .targa files.

yes, i think it was in the early nineties that i last had a virus, and the cleaner worked fine. i've run 22 but i've been busy writing and so it's think about it. i've always built my machine and always built it for trainz. but, you know, i've got a GT 1080 ti and an i7-3930 and 64 gbytes of ram ( ok, yes, i'm a photographer and do that and video editing for art projects. ) So, i think it's time to re-build my machine, with a new mo-bo with an i7-13000 CPU. And ram and probably a 4070 ti or something... probably not more than that because i think i won't need it.

It's not your anti-virus, you said it was working until now.
And as I've noted in another post, anti-virus doesn't work silently, and even if it did, there are logs to check.
So instead of speculating about whether it's anti-virus, you can reassure yourself it's not by checking the logs to be sure.

Open Windows Security:

Click that, this pops up:

You will be able to see there if it's your anti-virus, which I'm pretty sure it's not, again, because it worked before.

thanks. i've been building computers and sweating windows blue screen since the 90's. i'm pretty sure this is a problem on my own end, and i think it's a logical problem of misdirection -- perhaps caused by a windows update. but, i posted this in case someone has the same problem.

You re-installed TRS22 and it still doesn't start! Are you sure that everything related to the previous installation was removed before re-installing, perhaps a faulty pointer or something similar? Is it installed in the default location or are you using another disk?

Since it was running.. Have you tried to go to use/go back to a Windows System Restore Point from when it did run?

thanks, yes. i reinstalled to another disc. i'm thinking it's got something to do with win 10 and a recent update. i sure, yes, enough, that it is a pointer issue with addressing the exe itself. this, though, where i click the actual folder'd exe. very funny -- totally ignoring me, and i haven't had this happen since the late 1990's. not too motivated though because i'm busy writing some stuff, and it's always work, windows, and i have a feeble mind... remember DOS? i do. memory problems, but nothing else.

Hmmm, my last Win10 updates were 2024-08 KB5041580 and KB5042352 and my Trainz22PE still runs fine. Have you tried to uninstall any updates to see if that is your issue?
MS-DOS, yup and for some reason I kept my old 1.44 Mb installation disks although without a compatible drive they're just nostalgia items now.

Self-inflicted problems aren't fun!

It could be a recent Windows 10 update. Microsoft has been neutering Windows 10 with recent updates causing all kinds of issues such as disabling Bluetooth drivers and other things. I swear that they're doing this to force people into upgrading to Windows 11 (yuck).

I would check the Event Viewer and see what that says. It could be Windows 10 being mucked up, or it could be something stupid. It's those stupid things that get us!

DOS still lives on a few of my machines and I have a portable Toshiba 1.44 USB drive that works pretty well for reading old floppies on my machines that don't have a drive anymore. I found some nice goodies on my floppy disks I still have.

thank you for this information. i think it's personal muck up, but i've not got it yet. mostly, you know, i spend more time on games-modifying or getting them to run -- or so it seems. my steam counter says i've done thousands of hours on E.U. 4, but i don't remember them. : )

Have not seen anybody suggest a video driver problem.??

could this be the reason, know that sometimes a corrupt video driver can cause problems.

I always do a system restore point when updating video drivers.
