Trainz Living Railroad

At the moment the key words on that link are:

The prototype system identifies and schedules individual deliveries between two industries. Players can dynamically adjust industry inputs and outputs, pause and resume schedules, and take control of any train.

This is an improvement over the existing waybill system as it does link two industries together as seller and as customer. Most everything else listed is either still in development or in the idea stage. This is a very big project with many big goals that will fundamentally change the way that users can interact with the game in Driver.

That begs the question of the level of commitment by N3V to follow through and complete the system or at some point just declare it done and move on to something else.

That same question could be asked of every software developer. At what point is any software project ever "complete"? There is always something more that could be added, a few more "tweaks" here, a bit of "polish" there, etc. etc. The "law of diminishing returns" dictates that, eventually, a project reaches a point there will be more value in putting the effort into "something else".

My opinions

Thank you for your replies, it does (to me), sounds like Shedmaster, let's hope it turns out to be as good, I wish Trev999 had updated Shedmaster.

Very true, no project ever reaches 100% of what was planned. But here N3V has laid out the plans for all to see. Which is something they had been hesitant to do under Tony's tenure. At the moment, it appears that TLR has only achieved about 20% of the stated goals. After all, this is the replacement for the Waybill system that has existed unchanged since it was introduced in TRS2004.

The thing I liked about Shedmaster, was the ability of the system to take only the amount of goods required. So if you had a 20 full coal trucks in the siding, but the power station only required 6 trucks, that's all that the engine would take. The video above show how the system worked.

I had lots of industries being serviced on this test track, and once set correctly I'd sit and watch them going backward and forward for hours.

This depends on the SDLC methodology in use at N3V. All down to the goals they have set really.

I am wondering about the overall complexity of the product. With the advanced graphics, and the railroad manager, N3V may loose some portion of its possible customers. The original product that did a lot, but was understandable, is moving to advanced elements that may be discouraging to some possible customers. Making this meal of features edible is necessary.

Until a workable beta version emerges it is all speculation.

If The Living Railroad is an option available for those who wish to use it, like UDS and S20 are currently, then I can see no problems. I cannot see how the addition of UDS and S20, for example, would have lost existing or future customers as you can continue build railways as before without ever using them. I would expect (again, speculation) that the addition of TLR will not stop anyone from running normal Driver sessions as they always have.

My speculations.
