Trainz-build numbers below 3.7 are no longer supported....

Well I'm stuffed. I actually can't update my trainz 12 to SP1. It fails during the patching process, and although I was following the very helpful forum (thanks shane) I could not find a solution. The only way around this would be to buy a completely new version of the game. And I cannot justify the money unless there's a sale.
The main reason I chose trainz over Rail simulator, is because the vast majority of the content is free. Created not by the game producers, but by third parties who do it for themselves and the rest of the community. I feel that NV3 are pushing for the Rail simulator model, and when it gets to the point of being unable to use my version to do anything, and it costs £4.99 for a house or a locomotive, I think I will go back to my train set. That isn't affected by build numbers.

I know people are angry and upset about the changes uploadable build numbers however, I think we are just flogging a dead horse. It is done and over with and we just need to move on. Adjust to the changes and move forward. When they dropped support for billboard trees and changed to speedtree many claimed the sky was falling and Trainz was over. When they updated the DLS the last time and many had to change to higher build numbers the sky was falling and it was the end of trainz. This will work itself out. Those that wish to continue using and creating for Trainz will just update to what is needed and move on. I hope that all the creators move on and update and continue to produce the fine products they have for many years put out but in the end the game will continue on. Everyone just take a breath. Get a cup of tea and enjoy life. It is far to short to waste anger on a game.

The real problem is that we have not been warned in advance for such a sudden change. Many of us still have stuff they wanted to upload to DLS and are not able to do it anymore withont changes.

Same here Pete, I had a load ready to upload, however I registered my view on lack of any warning earlier, time to bite the bullet and move on, no amount of protesting is going to change anything.

Patching to 3.7 or continuing to upload to the DLS only rewards N3Vs behavior and encourages more of it in the future.

Agree 100%. Taking some of these arguements to their logical conclusion if TS12 means build 3.5/3.6/3.7 then T:ANE means build 3.9/4.0/4.1/4.2. If I make a model for build 4.2 people will expect to to work in 3.9/4.0/4.1 as well if they don't want to use the final version of T:ANE. The trainz-build number should tell you the version of Trainz that the asset has been tested in - building in one version and then just backdating the trainz-build without testing is just asking for trouble. Or are people seriously suggesting that content creators have all of these builds installed to test TS12 content in 3.5/3.6/3.7 because they won't patch to the latest version?

Paul

Paul, I understand the point that you and Rumour are making, but I would point out that builds 3.9 and 4.0 are pre-release betas for TANE whereas builds 3.5 and 3.6 are full public releases of TS12. I've revisited the N3V life-cycle policy at http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php/Trainz_Life-Cycle_Policy and that does not talk about builds, but about versions of the game - it clearly states that support for TS12 runs to September 2016*. There has still been no formal announcement, aside from the occasional postings of some N3V staff, about the obsoleting of builds 3.5 and 3.6. As I've argued before, these builds of TS12 are not 'obsolete', they're iterations of the current version of the game, so why withdraw support? I leave others to answer that question, though I note that neither builds support DRM.

Paul

* Note language: "The following end of support dates are formally acknowledged ... Trainz Simulator 12 ... September 2016" [my emphasis]

A little off topic but same general purpose I am wondering? But has any body with TS12 not patched up to 3.7 been having routes crash all the sudden? or should I say since TANE beta releases which I haven't tried out., waiting for the full release! I am just curious because it s not a hardware problem?

I haven't been much of a Content Creator for Trainz much, but I do appreciate all the work that everyone has done over the years. I have enjoyed many wonderful contents that were provided from 3rd party creators and have found enjoyable memories with TS2010 and TS2012, by far the best platforms that I have dealt with over the years, it is sad to see those old memories fade, but it is in the name of progress or profits I guess? I feel like I just bought myself a $120 door stop, I can't even cancel the order at all at Simulator Central... I hope that N3V cleans up someday and bring back the franchise to the days it was before. I feel that my days are limited with N3V, it has been an amazing 7 years and I hope that others can still find the joys that we had before.

Most things that are flagging at all are flagging one or two little errors, some of which I feel are silly for N3V to ask for, but I can understand their reasoning as part of an attempt at making a wider standard for the content people have access to. Things like Dual use of .Tga Files as a Thumbnail .... Is it really so bad to not use .tga Files as Thumbnails?

Yes. There are three issues with this. One is an outright fail -- a case where the direct references to the .tga stop working. The other two are performance problems. One is a cause of stuttering (building textures on the fly while Trainz is running which could have been done by Content Manager on commit), and the other is inflated graphics card RAM usage (those on the fly textures are either four or eight times the size they could have been had we built them in CM and had the time to do it properly, oh and you've probably got the other version of the texture loaded already anyway).

or a Decimal Point in the Maximum Load Capacity for an Engine or Wagon. ... or to keep things like decimal points out of maximum Fuel Tank Capacities?

This is normally a case of overly-high precision on a low-accuracy number. The side of the wagon says "150,000lbs", so we'll plumb that into google and find that it's 68038.9kg in these newfangled metric units. We then cut'n'paste that into the config file, and hey presto, we are done.

Thing is, there is no reason we need the number that precisely -- 68039 would be absolutely fine. In fact, you'd probably not notice any difference in game if it was provided as 68000. To all the people that are thinking "but that's wrong!" -- how accurately do you think that number was calculated in the first place? The original is provided to two significant figures. The actual weight of each individual wagon will not be 150,000lbs to the pound exactly -- it'll be hundreds, if not a thousand or more off. And each one will be slightly different too. And that's before you consider consumables like oil and grease, wear (new wheels are appreciably heavier than worn ones, for example), repairs, etc, which would modify each wagon further from this number.

Nevertheless, please send us a bug report about this if you are either getting a large number of them on the same tag across a range of content, or getting ones where the accuracy really matters (like you're being asked to choose between 2 and 3 where you really want 2.5, for example).

Include the tag name(s), the error reported, a usage example (e.g. the KUID of a DLS asset that hits this case, or a copy of an asset you've built which hits it), and for the 'widespread error' case, an indication of how widespread it is.

I would agree with the statement, however there is really no good reason for this being a flat out error either. Software conversion of this into the proper format while committing or on the fly is not performance intensive and the config is usually re-written on commit anyhow. I mean sure 1845.4 may not be absolutely required but that is just what comes up when converting from whatever units when entered in the calculator or spreadsheet. I guess it is off-topic but that was by far a really silly reason to cause an error where a warning would have been just fine.

Getting a bit off topic but perhaps triggered by the desire to get to 3.7. :) There were innumerable threads and posts on this during the period. As I recall, my "solution" was to shut down my anti virus and firewall completely before kicking off the patch. Physically disconnect from the Internet during the process if that vulnerability concerns you. I think the update process bleats towards the end about not being able to connect but I think you can ignore that.

I'm not sure there was any guaranteed solution but that worked for me.

Let's all move on and start making some good stuff for T:ANE - when we get some documentation. :o

I agree with this. I'm reasonably sure that in the past integers were accepted for float values and, presumably, converted during the process. Some of the variable types used in config containers are a bit vague. The "decimal" type can be expressed as a integer or as a float. For some examples see some of the default values in the smoke container.

I'm an ex programmer and the use of the type "decimal" confuses me. Either the thing is an integer or a float. Perhaps modern languages make an assessment on parsing and change the type on the fly. Surely your parsers can do the same.

Did the TS12 upgrade on a new install overnight. For the third time, though I didn't really want to. Took 6 hours from go to whoa.
I will only use it for things that will just run in SP1. Will still use Pre SP1 for everything else.
Will never be getting Tane though. Once they pull this stunt with SP1, I will give it away except for what I can run on my machine offline.
Cheers,
Mike

He knows better... probably waiting for the thread to disappear from view.

Hello John,

Yes, it will disappear, but as for me, I got a long memory!

The reason why I never bought the classic series was because N3V pulled this same trick before that series came out, (the customer under a train wreck), and that was my payback, not to buy it!

Next round, I say the ball is on my corner!

... to be continue ...

Have a good day, sir

Ishie

And rightly so...

This is the last time I will give any money to them via a Kickstarter or purchase. They lost me as a customer. When a company starts driving away its longtime customers, it's time to give them a boot. To me it's a sign of other things going on that we're not privy to and those things aren't good.

I'd just like to say I have spent a lot of money with N3V buying 2006, 2009, 2010, 2012, S&C, TANE, the Duchess pack plus at least 10 First Class Tickets but after this last arrogant move, which has no regard or respect whatsoever for their customers, I shall be keeping my cash in my pocket.
And I wouldn't be surprised if I'm not the only one.
