Trainz 2006 startup problem

Hi, can anyone please explain why I start Trainz 06 up with open GL and it says I cant start up. But when I put the setting to hardware acceleration, it opens up, but gameplay is pretty slow even on low settings. Is there a solution to this? I have XP by the way..
