The General, a US Civil war locomotive

The one I have is by AMT.

The description says it is the one used in the 'Great Locomotive Chase'.

It is the wood burning version.

Yea, that's the one I made. Perhaps I'll post pictures of it. I redid the track, (kit ones are cheesy!) and used balsa stained to look like ties. Along with model RR ballast(?) (rocks). Then I made my own case for it.

Mine was painted differently though than this one or the kit instructions.

Have fun with it!

I built this when I was "ignorant" of what she should really look like. Should have stuck with the kit (museum) colors, but hey, she still looks great to me!

AMT/Ertl kit built about 10-15 years ago??

Very nice model, I really must make a start on mine.

Hope it fits in my display case though.

Putting it in the display case will keep the dust out of it and little grandfingers away.

Dennis

I had to make my own display case for it. Basically, it's just some 1/8" plexiglass that goes over the model. Looks professional! Keeps everything out like dust and insects.

I'll post a picture if your interested. Simple to make if you have a source for plexi handy!

We have a place here that will make perspex covers, bit expensive, but they do a good job. I have used them before for the wifes stuff.

Depends if the 'household authority' will let me put it somewhere on display. Otherwise it goes in my display case in my computer room.

Question:
The wood in your tender is different to the picture on mine, did you use actual wood or is it an extra you bought?

The wood on the tender is also balsa wood shaped into rods, stained with a dark(ish) stain, then cut into sections about an inch or so long. Next split like cord wood. The stain soaks into the wood enough to look like bark, but not deep enough to penetrate too many cells and make it look stupid. You could also "scratch" the length of various peices then stain, and it looks like "veins" in the wood. That is how I did the RR ties also. ;)

PROGRESS REPORT!!

Ok, once again I have learned MANY things! Animations and selection boxes are fresh on my mind!

Except for the sounds (including the whistle) ALMOST EVERYTHING is done! :D

Both brake levers work, gauges work, (I'm waiting on photos from the real engine to modify the gauge textures.), levers and sounds work, (see below). I verified with the museum that the 2 front windows opened, and verified the hinge sides of the windows. Got the injector to work!

I do NOT have the firedoor animations working, and may never on this loco. This "museum version" was an OIL burner, so animating it for this engine would only be for looks. (isn't everything???)

I'll be working on the sounds today / tonight. My sound system is blown out from the lightning damage, and I'm waiting on a replacement to arrive soon so I'll test it thouroughly.

MEANWHILE!

I NEED HELP WITH A COUPLE OF MORE ITEMS!!

I use to get sound (USING THE KEYBOARD) on the throttle and reverser until I animated those levers. Sound works fine on those levers if I use the mouse on them. In cab mode, use keyboard shortcuts and it's silent.

See #1 below for help with another issue.

LEFT TO DO!

1. This SHOULD be an oil burner. Would like to know how to make her an oil burner instead of a wood burner. (Civil War version will burn wood). IS THIS POSSIBLE? How about re-fueling, (I would think the Tender would have to refuel with oil), and boiler pressure should be "steady"? (I would think the boiler pressure would be steady if using oil, no need for spacebar??) OR if the Trainz allows it, I could set a knob to feed oil and make it adjustable like the water knob for the injector?

2. Finish sounds!

3. Verify enginespecs. 1) she seems to need to hit the space bar a LOT! Goes through steam pressure FAST! I understand about the reverser, but still goes through pressure like nothing! 2) When stopping with brakes, and a load, seem to have to "rock" her to get her going again. Could be me.

Anything else??

Terry

Well, I hope you work out the bugs. The Boiler PSI might be a problem, but I can test it if you want. I've been driving a lot of steamers lately in Trainz and probably can judge if the fuel is going to fast

I've found a matching whistle. The B&O Railroad Museum's #4, the William Mason, has a whistle that sounds similair to my MTH General Locomotive. I will now looks for a recording that you can use.

Great! That engine was built around the same time as the General and also operated during the Civil War, not to mention that it played the role of the General in the 1950's "Great Locomotive Chase" movie. It is very fitting, indeed! By the way, the B&O's Wm. Mason is number 25, not 4.

Oh, well the video I found said four. I've just asked a few people and I am awaiting a reply. If you could get in touch of the B&O railway museum, you might be able to get a whistle recording.

I'll see what I can do to get it. Meanwhile if you manage to acquire it, pass it on! :D

I'm still looking too. Found one I may stick with. Sounds good, but is it "the one!"??

Meanwhile, the gauges are completed and historically accurate. They are even "calibrated" and display the pressures properly! Got the "master" photos from someone at the musuem and had to make the gauges in PSP. Looks realistic!

Everything works as it is suppose to. Next, I clean up and finish the soundworks, and then (hopefully) get a script that will make her an oil burning engine. THEN she will be complete!

Updates soon,

Terry
