The General, a US Civil war locomotive

Just wanted to give everyone an update. Yesterday we suffered an (almost) direct hit from a lightning bolt. Wiped out both my wifes computer and mine. :'( All of my networking hardware is gone.

The GOOD news is that I always back up my work and I did NOT loose the mesh or anything else on the General. So the "fixes" on the General will need to be shelved until I replace my system. I will continue to monitor this thread, and will take notes when I can. All valid requests will be addressesd as soon as I can get to them.

I love viewing the screenshots. Takes away the pain from losing my system, but now I can't "play"! :'(

I will return!

Terry

Man oh man I'm sorry to hear that, we lost our network about 2 years ago, fortunately all the lightening hit was our router and ethernet cards, so was easy to replace those, but a whole system, thats gotta hurt really bad...........:(:(:(

How did you make the smoke points for the steam to to fire only operate only with the horn sound?

would be a good trick to know to fire the dictator !

Use 'a.whistle' as the attachment point name. Then, set up the smoke tag in the config file as normal, using mode 'whistle' - TRS will automatically trigger it when the horn key is pressed.
Example:
Code:
smoke0 {
    attachment "a.whistle"
    mode "whistle"
    color 255,255,255,255
    start 0
    rate 15
    velocity 6
    lifetime 1
    minsize 0.2
    maxsize 1.5
    accel 0.1,0.1,0.25
}
And, the photo I have of the Dictator agrees with your choice of trucks / bogeys :)

Thanks Pencil42!!

for grins and giggles, Ill try it out on the Dictator,, if I can make it fire on demand!, Hey if that works for that,, then I have a GREAT idea for fun project to do latter, !!
Update my CSA Ironclad, Pant the shuters and cannon and fire away with this trick,

ALMOST ready to start up again. Faster computer! :D

Will answer previous questions and address "fixes" very soon.

Thanks all!

Terry

Glad to hear you are back up and running, Terry!
I did an animated front coupler for these old locomotives. If you are interested, I'll send you the GMAX and scripts.
The coupler bar has been improved since this shot (but then again, the model is easy enough to modify :) )

ABSOLUTELY!!! THAT would be GREAT!!! Send away! I was wondering how this could be done!

ALSO!

If ANYONE out there knows how to make the bell animated when the "B" key is hit, that would be cool too!

I've seen the youtube video about the general and I can only say two things, one good and one bad.

1. The engine looks fantastic, great work.
2. Could you use a different whistle? I don't like the default one. It sounds kind of something that would be one a NG engine.

Someone out there promised me a whistle on a CD. Suppose to be sending it to me. IF it is what I'm looking for, I'll implement it. Otherwise I'll search for appropriate whistles.

A Dictator !

This was something I made long long ago, but there was not much interest in Civil war items back then so it just gathered dust on the hard drive,

Would there be interest now in her? If so, I would be willing to retexture the brute, add more corrected details and such, shadows, and get her ready. She was built based upon 4 photos of the dictator.
I am still looking for my Confederate rail Cannon, no luck yet.

Looks great! Imagine what it will be like when the Civil War version is released? Not too distant future. Still need to do the cab view for this one though. I want to be able to simply modify this one appropriately, (NOT just textures!) and then release the Civil War version.

SOMEONE out there posted a question about the nameplate and asked if it was changeable. The answer is NO. This is (as accurate as I can get it) a representation of the engine in the museum. The name on the nameplate is part of the mesh as well as the plate on the front of the boiler.

HOWEVER, after and ONLY after I finish this engine, the Civil War version and a post-Civil War version I may release a "standard" (if you want to call it that) engine or set of engines based on this one. This will be in the DISTANT future!

It will probably have changeable numbers and names. BUT I don't recall seeing too many engines with the name on the boiler like these. The post C.W. General had the name on the cab sides. Perhaps I'll do something like that. Should work as long as someone doesn't type in a LONG engine name! ;)

Ok, got my system (almost) back in shape.

I thank everyone for the inputs, both positive and the "fixes".

1. Centered the front number plate.

2. DRIVERS and main wheels are correct now! (Thank you NARROWGAUGE for the input and the good eyes!)

3. The "animdist" issue has been resolved. Now the drivers turn appropriately. The value you gave still didn't make it look correct, so I experimented and now it looks right. (Thank you RPearson)

Great. Also, don't put the whistle high up on your list, it was just a sugggestion. All that your doing sounds great!
