That oh so reliable Wiki

Well, we'll try this again. Without the scattering of clustered punctuation marks, lest I offend.

Can anyone explain why the wiki is in fact not so reliable? Why it repeatedly is unreachable, or why once again it claims I am not allowing cookies, when in fact I am?

NOTE: before I get another round of "works fine here" posts, I am at this time specifically referring to "Logging In", and I am not misusing the term. I am speaking of the process where one enters their username and password in order to have access to edit information in the wiki. I am NOT speaking of clicking "Trainz Wiki" or entering online.ts2009.com and getting the "home page" of the wiki to appear in one's browser.

While that has failed in the past ("repeatedly is unreachable") this time I'm speaking about the log in failure, and the erroneous reporting of cookies being blocked.

I get the same error trying to log into the DevWiki. I can browse the DevWiki OK but as you said and as happening to you too, I am told to accept cookies if I want to log in. My browsers are set to accept cookies so I guess it is AGAIN a case where AURAN/N3V Games are using people for web development who DO NOT KNOW how to program web sites and their web pages.

As we have repeatedly seen in the immediate past with the AURAN Forum, as well with the Simulator Central web site too, it seems they (N3V Games) are using "monkeys" for this and as you know, with "monkeys", one gets only a "peanut" job done.

With me it is logging into the DLS to d/load from it, it is impossible for me to do so although I am logged in, session cookie (see, a coockie IS set there) is set but "Taddownloadstation idle > failed d/load of 'http://downloadlist xxxxxxxx etc." and consequently ANY d/load I try through CM fails utterly and completely. DLoading via FTP either fails right from the start or I might get one or 2 CDPs to d/load then they usually stop after d/loading just a few KBs of data of a CDP and then I get either "Server full, try again" or I "reached the daily DL limit" or other such cr@p and any further d/load stops there and then. This is with ALL my versions of TRS and TS (look at my name on top left of post here in the Forum) registered with N3V Games. I have given up telling my d/load problems to anyone who wants to listen to them.

I have a "life time" (yeah, don't get me started on that one) FCT for several years already, listed and activated in my "Planet Auran" web link plus another FCT waiting to be activated after 2035 (hahaha, a long long time after I expire myself) but all to no avail.

Not so cheerful

Neither was I and the screen shot in your original thread clearly shows me as logged in at top right. I've sussed why though, I ticked the stay logged in for 180 days box last time this happened, that effectively bypasses the actual login screen. You will be happy to hear that on my other PC's I have the same problem. That would put the problem down to just the actual login screen, at a guess it's not actually checking for enabled cookies and going straight to the "Error" message, maybe a line of code missing or incorrect?

Good Evening All
We are aware of the issues with the wiki. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to solve this issue permanently. I will speak to our admin tomorrow so that he can look into this again.

We are looking into long term solutions to this issue, however it will be some time before we can implement one, or more, of these. At this time there are other much higher priority areas that our team are working on, and as such for the time being we will simply need to resolve this issue each time it appears.

Regards

Is "higher priority" related to the now infamous series of fixes? N3V's insistence to pursue the gaming community customers may be detracting from support for the more technical community.

A big and sincere THANK YOU for answering. (no offense to the others, but hearing from an official source and all that...)

I can understand this being a lower priority, but I hope it's not being looked upon as unimportant (as many companies I've worked with in the past have viewed "documentation") since it's "flakey" performance is very contra-indicative of any user putting any time and effort into contributing to it.

It's a great concept really, though a proper Codex from the programmers would be best having this "community driven content" being able to work collaboratively on "community driven documentation", gives us the access to such information without the burden of it's production being singly focused on N3V. It's being accessible from within Trainz means it's the ONLY place to do it really.

Most creators don't bother, but I've been adding "info-url" tags to some of my assets and making descriptive pages on the wiki providing instructions on the assets use.

That's a GREAT system, but only if it works.

I don't know if there would be any possibility within the system for this, but if there is anything I could do to help, I'd gladly volunteer.

3 Days now and still the "cookies" issue remains.

Wonder not why I might be prone to more colorful language. Being polite has gotten my bupkis.

frogpipe,

Just out of curiosity, what browser and version are you receiving these problems on?

Any of them, but my normal one is Firefox. (I do web development so I have Chrome, IE, Firefox, and Opera installed)

There is always the unofficial one. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Trainz Its a little more reliable.

Cheerio John

That's all well and good (and admittedly does have some good info on it) BUT - the whole idea of the Trainz Wiki is that it can be accessed IN GAME. I'm about about to release some guides and templates that require some description of how to use them, so I've been (or HAD been) building pages to go with them and setting the "info-url" tag so that there is a click-able link in surveyor that will open the page that describes how to use the asset in game.

All shot to hades thanks to.... never mind, it just a waste of electrons to go on about it....

(touch wood) I have no problems adding and editing pages. If you want to give me those pages through the Yesterdayz Trainz forum I'd be happy to upload them and nominate you as the creator. You would need to tell me where you want them. I would dislike good work going to waste.

Very rarely do I look at the in-game help but I agree there should be something other than an invitation to add your own page.

Cheers

I'll keep the offer in mind.

I figure someone has to be the first, and it has potential to be a very useful and powerful system. If only it worked. There are an awful lot of Wikimedia installations out there that don't seem to have these troubles...
