Is the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Eagle OC 2xHDMI 2xDP 8GB suitable for Trs 2022? I currently have an nVidea GTX 1060 and am running Trs 19
Any advice will be appreciated
Cheers

I am running Trainz Plus on 3 different systems - a desktop (running both the retail release and the latest beta versions) with an RTX3060Ti, a laptop (running the latest beta) with an RTX3050Ti and another laptop (also running the latest beta) with a GTX1050Ti. It performs great on all 3.

The Trainz Plus beta (which is TRS22 with all the plus extras) runs noticeably better than the Train Plus (retail) because of the higher compression that the beta version is using on all its files. This reduces the load time for all assets and reduces the screen "stutter" in high density areas to almost nothing - not that it was a really noticeable issue on the RTXs before but comparing the beta version with the non-beta version on the same machine, there is an improvement.

I have most of my settings set on maximum for the RTX cards. The major exception is the Shader Quality which I set to Normal because of display issues for PBR textures (a problem caused by the textures themselves, not by Trainz).

My advice would be to save some money and stay with the GTX1060Ti at least until after you have installed TRS22 and then make a judgement about its performance.

Following on from previous correspondents, I am also operating a GeForce GTX 1060 video card and have just purchased/downloaded the basic version of TRS 2022.

Two questions: what minute by minute operating temperatures are member’s experiencing using TRS22; second, what temperature ranges are they comfortable with, or put another way, what temperature promotes any level of concern to the individual.

As I’m writing this my PC is recording a temperature of 31[SUP]0[/SUP]C. Log into Trainz and that figure climbs to around 41[SUP]0[/SUP]. From memory TRS19 routes (Medium setting with V/Sync at half) run satisfactorily at around the 47 – 51[SUP]0[/SUP] mark.

Using the same settings for TRS22, operating the route West from Denver – Winter Park Train Westbound - driving in cab control mode - temperaarture hit 62[SUP]0[/SUP] within the first minute, then continued to fluctuate between 53 and 62[SUP]0[/SUP] over the entire journey which included three 5 second freeze-outs along the route and was terminated just short of the final destination with a total image freeze. (Ctrl-Alt-Delete followed by extended DataBase Repair).

A second run with C&O Hinton - Thurmond Empties produced temperature fluctuation in the range 52 through to 63[SUP]0[/SUP] but principally around the 55[SUP]0[/SUP] mark. Otherwise a totally uneventful run.

Working on a WIP in Surveyor Mode produces a temperature around 47[SUP]0[/SUP].

I understand that some routes are more demanding than others and I accept that my PC, while fine some 5/6 years ago when new, is now being tested more severely. Am just trying to formulate a plan of action.

Any thoughts?

John

Anything under 80C is normally fine for GPU temps. Most GPUs won't begin to throttle performance until they reach about 83C.

To prevent my video card from overheating and throttling, I use MSI Afterburner.

Afterburner (msi.com)

There's no need to overclock anything and use it to adjust the fans. Using this and experimenting with various fan speeds, I've been able to get my video card temperature down to the mid-60s and keep it there rather than throttle up and down constantly as I drive. The issue is 100% related to the lousy case from Dell because I never had this issue before with my original computer in the large tower. Dell has crammed an RTX3080 into a mid-tower with little room for good airflow.

Thank you John and Wreeder.

Had already loaded Afterburner yesterday. Now have to learn to use it to best advantage.
