Still spending money

Cab Driver
I can't stay away from this sale. Today I downloaded the PRR T1 Steam engine. It is fantastic, the inside of the cab is the best Steamer I have seen so far, and it looks great outside too.

I know ! The Super Super SALE at Simulator Central is a fantastic blowout !

I bought 49 loco's for $ 54.70, that would have originally cost $ 218.60

I might just go in again for the China D38 Schnabel Car - Full Pack 2 Pack

Me being a cheapskate I bought the CN ES44DC, but I really should have gone all out and bought the BNSF/CN Pack instead, and gotten 3 locos !

I bought the (20 pack) NS Heritage Mega Pack, Wowser ! What a great deal !

The 6 pack Aerotrain is a total GAS !

PRR T1 (2 pack)
BlueComet (3 pack)
NS SD80MAC (3 pack)
CN ES44DC (get the BNSF/CN 3 Pack instead, better bang for the buck)
PRR Pack (4 pack)
NW-NS Pack (4 pack)
CSX Pack (3 pack)
CSX SD70MAC (3 pack)

the Aero Train is the other one I was looking at this morning. May get that one too.

As I never had payware before, I saved each loco, and all the locos depecdencies, and meticulously saved them all to a CDP's, and put each pack of locos along with their dependencies in separately custom named folders, and put them all on a DVD-RW disc, as a backup in case of catastrophic PC railure. My 4.37GB DVD-RW disc is almost 50% full, as I also saved my SP's patchs on that same disc !

ooh, just a head's up: Don't use RW discs for any kind of backup or long-term storage. They are unreliable, especially when packet writing. Just use good old DVD-R, preferably genuine Taiyo-Yuden obtained from a reputable source. You can make incremental backups too with regular DVD.

But then again with prices of external Hard Disks being so cheap, it is easy now to back up any important data on it, just in case. Actually, I back up all my content creating stuff I am working on, onto 2 different external Hard Disks, again, just in case. This saved my bacon a couple of times already in the past.

Cheers

When backing up your data, save a copy of your serial numbers too. I put mine in a text file named for the download like S&C SN.Txt for the Settle and Carlisle. If I ever need to reinstall anything, All I do is copy the serial number and paste into the field when prompted for it. This saves me digging online for the serial number(s) and having to type the letters and numbers again and again.

I agree, RRSignal regarding the DVD-RWs. They are bad news when it comes to permanent backups. In part the problem is the way they work. They seem to be good for that one drive they've been written to and don't work if at all with any other DVD drive. This is an issue because DVD drives do fail.

I back up on an external hard drive, an image of my entire C drive including the OS and boot sector along with backups of my files using Macrium Reflex. On really critical files, I back up in the cloud using Google Drive. DVDs and CD's go bad in my experience. If anything happens to my HD, I can put a brand new bare metal HD in, a copy everything from the backup right onto my new HD, and I am back to normal.

Pretty much what I do only with Paragon Backup and restore, except there is no way I would trust anything stored in the cloud, it goes on DVD and one of the 10 spare hard drives I have locked away safely. In my experience, twice now, online storage has a habit of vanishing without notice.

Good advice for the serials; I do it too. Regarding DVDs, they are very complicated. You can't just "burn and forget." I recommended the TY because they are the closest thing (by far) to bulletproof media, but there are so many variables including the manufacturer of the DVD burner, the manufacturer of the media, whether the media or drive manufacturer used legit test data or used guesstimated data, counterfeit media, etc. to say nothing of the extra problems RW media introduces.

DVDs and their relations are very complicated. There's an article I have a link to somewhere regarding this. There are some brands that are better than others due to their manufacturing process. Overall I've had excellent luck with my DVDs but I have had my share of dodgy ones right out of the stack. I tend to purchase the better brands rather than the Best Buy, or CompUSA previously, generics and have had better luck overall.

I too don't trust the cloud for backups either. There's something about having control of my data at all times. Granted I'm doing this for my own personal data so there's no reason to call in Offsite Storage or Iron Mountain. So I have 4 backup local drives along with my DVDs. I rotate the backup schedule between the drives so I don't overwrite anything for at least one month. So I set this up so Drive 1 is for week 1, drive 2 for week 2, etc. I don't use any special backup software and do a manual file copy using FastCopy which has various options for full, overwrite, differential, etc. One of the VPs at work got burned with his backup software after I warned him. He thought he was backing stuff up because the software said it was. It was alright - just a 20k file for some reason. His drive crashed and he lost everything! My DVDs are for software downloads which of course I can still get to but the discs are good for the reinstall should that happen.

I preach the backup gospel at work all the time but sadly people don't listen. In the past 2 weeks I have had 9 bad hard drives. These are mostly on the newer Dell E6420s and Lenovo T420s, and recently a desktop hard drive became a brick just the same. These drives weren't just bad, they were dead as bricks. Two of them didn't even spin up and one other one had bearing issues which had seized so bad the metal parts on the drive were bulging like bad brakes on a car. The other drives lost their cylinder information and no data could be found.

I, too, have been swept under the spell of this sale. My first order was for Trainz 12, Murchison 2, and a 1 year FCT. Two days later I came back and bought the Mohave Pack and Aerotrain. Today, I bought the UP Heritage Pack and the SD80MAC Pack.

As for backups, I have my data backed up both on a separate computer as well as in the cloud.

I promised myself I wouldn't...

got Aerotrain and TS2009 LOL (not bad for around $9)

Anyone got a clue how to get the TS2009 built in into TS12? I did the install content to TS12 during install but the installer said that TS12 was older than TS2009. D'oh!

Hi Norm,

It's easier then you think. :)

I suggest making a backup of your TS12 install before doing this.

Install TS2009 in its own folder.
Copy the JA files into the TS12 folder. I suggest renaming them beforehand to something like TS091.ja, TS092.ja, etc., just in case there are similar names in TS12.
After everything is copied, perform an EDR in the TS12 Content Manager.
Once that's complete, register the TS2009 in the TS12 options.

I did a similar process to bring my TS2010 install into my TS12 install a couple years ago no.

The consensus of the forum is that I now need to learn how to edit the config files for the items that I PAID FOR, in order for them to work.

I'm sure that someone here may be able to help you.

Editing config files is easy, and fun (that's what I keep telling myself).

That would be great. I'm not afraid to learn, although not overall pleased to be forced into it.
