Arriving in Tolland after climbing 3000' out of Denver I pick up my helper engine to take me up and over Rollins Pass

On the shoulder of the moutain above me you can see the first series of three switchbacks which will carry me up another 3000' to the pass.

Eldora siding and the first of at least eight trains I'll be meeting on my way over the Pass. The head office is pushing hard to get as much through the pass as possible before the weather sets in.

Final horseshoe of the Giant's Ladder. Starting into the 3 and 4 percent grades now.

So long Tolland! Once the train I passed at Eldora reaches Tolland the train you can barely see waiting at Tolland will be following me up the pass. I'm over 9000' above sea level here.

Nice shots Bill, Will, and Bob!

@Flyboy559 That is Rollins Pass 1915 from TrainzItalia, it is payware or more correctly it is one of the many things available once you purchase a "membership". Sherman Hill was one of theirs that they decided to move to freeware. They also have West from Denver which is the same as Rollins Pass except as it is now, with Moffat Tunnel and around forty more miles of track. They also have some US rollingstock and Lots of Italian rollingstock and routes. Also some German and Swiss stuff. Hopefully the membership will get me access to Donner Pass once they are ready to release that too.

OBTW those Challengers in Bill69's picture are from TrainzItalia also.

@normhart
is that SG track supporting NG rollingstock?

Nope Standard Gauge track with Prowler's Standard Gauge K-28 engines, most of the rolling stock is from Fitz505 except for the really nice baggage and combine cars from xtof.

Edit: All the boxcars on the train waiting at the Eldora siding are from Dap.

Prowler does not make Standard Gauge locomotives, what you have there are his 36in K-28 Locomotives... its possible you are seeing them as SG dude to the enormous outside frame counterweights...

Hi Norm,

You are right about the challengers, they are from Trainzitalia. I am planning to alter the smoke a little bit, give it more black and shorten the life of the steam. I'll post another shot from about the same place when done.

Cheers,
Bill69

Here they are with my modified steam container. Could some of you more mature trainzers who have seen steam locos in USA let me know if it's about right. I know it's not right for a UK loco, the fireman would get his backside kicked for making that much smoke in the UK.

It might be ok for a NZR oil burner on an excursion trip, they like to show lots of smoke.

Cheers,

Tap, Tap! Is this thing working? Tap, Tap, Tap. OK I guess we'er up now. :D

Darn, you're right they are 36". There isn't any Denver and Salt Lake Railway rolling stock so I figured the D&RG was perfect. Rats!

Oh well, you can't change ponies in mid-steam! :hehe:

Snow is starting to fall as we come up to Antalope siding. You can see one of the dozens of trestles that are along this route up ahead.

The conductor of the cattle train swings on board to tell me that #476 with a plow is waiting for me at Spruce Wye.
image2xor.jpg

That's a relief since this early August storm has caught everyone by surprise. All the roteries are still back in the Denver Shops.

The fireman spots the plow as we come to a stop on the Wye trestle.

I wish someone else would pick up on Prowler's lead with the Snow Plow product. It's pretty nifty how he did those and they'd be pretty nice to have on other locomotives.

Nothing but 4% grade from here on, come winter we will have 4 engines on each train.

The snows getting thicher and starting to stick. #476's engineer told me that the dispatcher at Tabernash figured what was coming and started grabing every locomotive he could get his hands on. Got plows mounted on them and started sending them east to the pass, probably saved the schedule and maybe a few lives.

The brakeman in the Dog House doesn't have much of a view.

Sure glad we have that plow with us. The Road has lost a couple of crews over the years, stranded in a storm with the engines frozen to the tracks.

I pulled a switcharoo there. I switched from the Rollins Pass 1915 route to the Rollins Pass 1915 Winter route for that last screenie. The rest of this photo essay will be on that route. These routes cover from just before Tolland to just past Fraser, about 40 miles long and almost a mile up. The West from Denver and West from Denver Winter routes cover from Denver to a ways past Tabernash, about 75 miles.

Nice shots Norm,

Are these later ones the kind of seasonal weather you are getting now? It's hot here atm. 24.9c that's equal to 76.8F good fishing weather except for the sunburn.

Cheers,

I live in the Napa Valley so no, we only see temps below 32F about a dozen time a year. Today might be the first of the year in fact. A couple of weeks ago it was about the same temperature as you. I know there is a snow pack building up in the Sierras but I'm not sure of the depth at this time. As for Colorado I have no clue but I lived near Denver for a very short time and seeing four or five inches appear in the mountains over a couple of hours would not be unlikely. There is permanent snow up there in some locations I believe. Edit: here is a link to some photos someone took of the pass http://www.matts-place.com/trains/colorado/rollins.html So far as I can tell the TrainzItalia route is very accurate. Here is another site that has some nice history of the pass http://www.daeunert.com/Colorado/html/rollins_pass.html (BTW I just discovered that the altitude at Spruce Wye was 10990 ft. Over a mile above Denver and over two miles above sea level.)

@Bob Monument Valley is one of my favorite places on this planet, I'll never see it again due to health reasons but it's nice to see your layout running through it.

I am a bit disheartened by my poor choice of locomotives so instead of taking you over the rest of Rollins Pass as I had originally intended I'll just leave you with these screenies while I do some more research on D&SL Ry rolling stock.

Looking down to the east from the peak above Carona, note the two trains in the center, one at Dixie siding just below Jenny Lake and just above that train another in the distance approaching Yankee Doodle Lake. Needle's Eye Tunnel is just visible on the shoulder of the mountain to the left. (Rollins Pass 1915 Winter route)

About the same location from the Rollins Pass 1915 route.

Here is a Google Earth shot from about the same location at 12033ft.

Thanks TrainzItalia!
