Splines or objects better for performance?

Is it better to use tree splines or a bunch of tree objects for performance.

I was thinking about replacing all my tree splines with tightly packed tree objects for a more natural look.

The short and simple answer is using any spline designed for a version of Trainz older than TS2009 will have a larger impact on performance than using the same number of pre-TS2009 trees. This is true in any version of Trainz. Your best bet for TS2009 and up is to use trees and tree splines designed for TS2009 and up if you want to max out the performance in those products.

In some circumstances a single spline may be more performance friendly than a load of different trees, because of the increased number of materials and meshes that need to be loaded, but in general, splines need a lot more processing, as Trainz has to work out how to stretch and bend the mesh as it is loaded.
