UK Forests

I'm building a new more accurate version of my UK Sunderland route and I have to do several small forests. This is something I'm not very good at and my forests tend to be just a lot of the same tree. Can any UK modellers suggest good 3D trees to use in a combination OR a UK route with good trees that I could copy ? The only thing I don't want is the old 4-6 plane trees.

UK forest are a mix but depending where you are in the country that mix can vary quite a bit as you are likely aware. I tend to use trees and bushes by RMM (search st_rmm) but there are many others some likely better other questionably worse. Building forest don't get too carries away in detail because unless you are walking through them much of the detail will be lost as you are generally traveling to fast to notice. Any of the following trees would not look out of place in a UK forest or hedgerow, but you don't need them all and not all forests are native trees, those planted for timber or biomass are frequently conifer. Search 'tree' and 'trees' and any of the names listed below. Trees by RMM are not named in English but somewhere on either this Forum or the web is a translation matrix kindly donated I believe by another member. Peter

Native: Oak, ash, elm, silver birch, hazel, beech, alder, common hawthorn, cedar, poplar, cherry, chestnut, elder, willow, lime, hornbeam, larch, maple, holly, rowan, sycamore, walnut, yew. aspen.

Conifer: Scots pine, black pine, Norway spruce, Sitka spruce, red cedar, cypress, Douglas fir, western hemlock,

You could download my Tristyn District GWR Route (TRS19) and see how I utilize trees. My criteria was to establish a "main" tree, then a secondary tree and occasionally an accent tree. By mixing the main and secondary trees (i.e. only 2 trees), you are being nice to your PC which is likely working hard already and does not need any undue additional stress. To make that "2 tree mix" more interesting, adjust the trees within a group to be various heights. If you still have areas that look a little boring ..... then add an accent tree. Hope that gives you some ideas. Regards. Colin (Driver_Col)

Well they look excellent as well, I use them everywhere, there are so many types all with different heights.

I've found if I make heavily wooded areas too dense, performance is affected. My work round is to put a fairly dense border of trees around the outskirts, then fill the rest of the forest less densely, on the basis that I'd intend the forest only to be seen from the ground anyway.

Also, if I may, what are you using for the folly on the hill? I need something like that for Edinburgh. Thanks.

Hi it's Penshaw Monument or more correctly The Earl Of Durhams Monument. I laid the base out on an OS map then the base is a rectangle of Stone Retaining wall dirty with cobbled road inside, the columns are IBS Factory Chimney and multiple splines of Wall Low Brown box fashion to make up the entablature. It's not very good and only to be seen at a distance. Coxgreen station is in the middle distance left of the forest.
