SOPA & PIPA - US Trainzers could be in trouble...

How would the SOPA and PIPA acts affect trainz, as pointed out above, would it mean that members would have to ask for permission whenever they would want to skin a train into a company livery?

I seem to remember Magandy created some Thomas characters for trainz, and then HIT ordered him to take them down due to copyright issues.
Capitalist society seems to be becoming like communist society but instead of government, big business controls people all for the name of profit.

In a nutshell:
If HIT files a suit under this law, any site that just mentions Thomas, has a Thomas screenshot, piece of Thomas content or even links to a site with any of the above will be blocked. Not just access. Any bank, credit card or even Paypal will be blocked from doing business with those sites.

It doesn't just pertain to trains. If I say "Holy Batman this is bad", whoever controls the copyright to Batman can legally shut this site down, along with a web browser that links to this thread. A copyright violation in Trainz would completely shut Steam down for example and any site that links to Steam would be considered a link to a pirate site and blocked, even though it links to a different game they sell not under investigation.

The scary part is, it's up to each site to enforce. N3V would have to censor posts here and content for references to Thomas, Google would have to check each link to make sure no reference to Thomas material is there. Anyone who feels they own a copyright can do this.

I have been reading these bills and this is just the start to lay groundwork for more legislation it seems. The potential for abuse is unreal. I see it as companies using copyrights to force anyone logging on to the internet to pay them royalties or shut down their competition.

The political aspect I'll leave out to keep the thread from being closed.

Dave.......

Yes, it appears that the accusation of copyright infringement is enough to let the department of justice block the site, and the burden of proof / legal fees would be on the accused (i.e. the accused is presumed guilty).

I haven't read about possible fines yet, I don't speak lawyer. If they can fine me for using a song, say on facebook, can they hold sites like facebook and their host liable for monetary compensation as well? Seeing as they are guilty as well under this law to be blocked, will they be forced to pay as well?

Dave......

I live in Australia, despite what it says.

S.O.P.A and P.I.P.A affects the whole world, not just the US. I recommend everyone signs the petition to keep it from passing. It will ruin the internet.

If you were like me and didn't know what is is/was, go here. It explains what S.O.P.A and P.I.P.A could potentially do.

Perfect example of the United States trying to be the global police force like usual... Idiots in congress inherently think that other countries would be okay with having U.S. based corporations control and shut down aspects of the internet within their borders.

Lol, no.

If you think our global neighbors are unhappy with us now... :o

The way I read it, yes. Basically if SOPA/PIPA pass; Facebook, My_, Youtube, Vevo, Mega_____, etc can all be shut down. However my starting statement is the big problem; "The way I read it". The language used in both SOPA & PIPA is so vague that it allows for the government to shut down any site for any claim. There is no fact-checking or requesting happening. If someone reports your site as having pirated material on it, it can be shutdown & you be arrested and/or fined.

Thomas Trainz websites like Sodor Island 3D will be in danger too as well as the Download Station:(

I believe that SI3D has a license to make TTE stuff, as there was an issue about copyrights & TTE here in the Trainz community a while back. So they wouldn't be in violation.

Peter, exactly. All burden of proof will fall on the accused, along with all legal fees. This is "blanket" legislation. A site like Steam can be shut completely down for any reason or complaint.

UP can say they don't authorize a picture on the Steam forum. All access to Steam will be blocked, along with bank transactions, even if a program they administer has nothing to do with the UP claim. It's not selective at all, the whole site goes down until the courts figure it out.

That would kill the gaming industry.

I have not heard of these bills yet, until now. Having the right to take down any site that doesn't censor? Complete BULL. This is just sad. Why must they do this to us? If these bills pass, well, the internet is gone. Companies will be destroyed, people will start riots, and there WILL be uprises. You can bet that.

As for now, lets hope congress gets our message. And that these bills DO NOT PASS.

This is something that will definetly be mentioned in my Social Studies class tomorrow...

Cross your fingers,

Carter :'(

people will start riots, and there WILL be uprises. You can bet that.

And what? I think you over estimate the "power of the people" in this regard. Riots are put down by the military if need be, uprisings are powerless without a military coup. Are you going to go stand in front of a tank over the internet? This isn't a free speech issue, this is about enforcing laws that are already in place by enacting a blanket law.

Case in point; the city of Detroit has given up on trying to catch individuals responsible for a rash of car thefts. Their solution? To now make parking in the area illegal. They are increasing patrols to monitor the parking violations.

Get that? They are not able to increase the patrols to prevent the theft, but they are able to increase patrols to monitor the parking, and I'm sure impose heavy fines for those that ignore the new restrictions. Like using a hammer to kill an ant.

The government is proposing basically the same thing in this case, instead of prosecuting individuals that distribute copyrighted property, they are just going to close down sites, and I'm sure, impose a hefty fine as well! They know they can't catch the faceless hordes, but they sure can catch the sites they use, and make some money in the process.

they're trying to stop piracy, when the guys in our military are one of the biggest consumers of pirated movies bought in Iraq and Afghanistan, ive talked to alot of my friends that are or were back from overseas and they say they buy pirated movies from WHOLE STORES that all they sell are pirated movies.

People, clam down, yes it will shut sites down, but those are sites which have PIRATED MATERIAL AND COPYRIGHT INFRINGED STUFF (Which might i Mind you that pirating is a very grave federal offense!) There are very great chances that places like Jointed rail, RR mods and other payware sites will not be closing down. Why you ask? THEY COPYRIGHTED THE MATERIAL THEY MADE IDIOTS!!! Its for those of whom, who hack and torrent and raid games like TRS 2012, 10, 06 UTC, TC 2 and 3, 2004! and repaint and release without the written constent of the author and creator himself copy written material...
Chances are the ENTIRE internet is not going to close due to the fact that not every site has priated and copyright infrenged material on there site. Yes I am for the bills

No you are wrong there. You missed the point. I doubt Every payware creator has gotten licensing from each and every railroad they use the logos from, such as CSX, UP, NS, BNSF, P&W, etc etc. So if UP or any of the other saw that they can have the site shut down and ANY sites they link to. Calling everyone idiots is certainly a QUICK way to make friends here. Perhaps you should read more of the bills.

hey guys, hows it going?

as far as these bills go...everyone can agree its 50/50. i myself would love to have no internet, no cell phones, etc.

the internet isnt a bad thing. BUT...its gotten waaaay out of hand.

these bills are pretty much being put in place to control/ regulate the internet a bit. i agree with the government there.

like sites like twitter...facebook...myspace...etc. they dont have admins/ moderators. etc. meaning, if i type the f word on here, ill get an infraction.

on facebook, you can do anything and not get in trouble., which is wrong. for instance, on the right hand side there are always ads for companies and you get bombarded with crap. but in real life, thats called soliciting, which is illegal.

like facebooks true purpose is what? to connect with other people, share ideas, etc. now its become a freaking marketplace.

the next thing is the illegal piracy of it. piracy is illegal. when any of you download music from a site without paying, like piratebay, utorrent, frostwire, etc....its illegal. you're technically stealing from the original artist. which people should be penalized for. stuff like that KILLS the economy.

anyway, sorry for the long post, but in short, i guess i can say that the US internet is technically part of the U.S. ... so why shouldnt the gov. control it a bit. think of a town. it has police. fire. medical services. etc. to keep in in line and under control.

the internet has none of that. its just free flowing. pretty soon it could get uncontrollable.

P.S. i think those "Anonymous" hacker idiots that hacked the Playt Station Network are a bunch of a-holes. if you havent heard, their "reaction" to this is theyre supposedly attempting to hack into gov. sites, like the FBI, Police, NSA, etc. so dumb. they dont support the govt. doing it, so theyre gonna do it? wow.

Exactly that Sampug, they want to control the internet IMHO, as that'd control most of the world. I think US likes their seat on the top, and doesn't want to lose it to any other country

Somebody hasn't been keeping up with current events, our king has pretty much decided we will descend into obscurity.:o

Government still controls the people; SOPA and PIPA are prime examples.

Those acts are inspired to support big business, the government probably put these proposals together due to their best friends/puppeteers putting pressure on them and obviously big business has more say than everyone else.
