Sketchup.....

Jacobchgo19

Whos that guy?
Hi all i was wondering how to move files from Google Sketchup 7.0 to TRS 2006 ?? Is there a possible way to do that
cause i am going to work on for my new route.

it's a handful of firetrucks and a station.
maybe a couple of police cars and a dispatch center with the maybe the Sears (Willis) tower and a bunch of yard buildings a couple interlocking towers with a great look to them and thats about it for it

Step by step instructoions WOULD BE HELPFUL

Thanks J.Metzger owner of the CSBS (Chicago Sea Board System).... :udrool:

This question has been raised many times before - just search the forums with the keyword sketchup and you will see numerous threads.

To save you a lot of trouble - the answer is that there is no simple direct and easy way to move a model from Sketchup into Trainz. You will need to export your model into a third party format such as .3ds and then perhaps into gmax and the end result, after all this manoeuvring, may not be to your liking.

I gather that there are a few creators who have used sketchup to create some assets but there has been no mass movement of creators to Sketchup from the more mainstream programs such as 3DS and GMax - despite the ease of use that Sketchup offers - I guess its limitations outweigh its advantages.

Ok can you tell me what you did please? because i have Google Sketchup 8 and its not working for me.

One thing you'll have to watch is the number of materials you use. Many SketchUp modellers use a new image or texture for every face, and this won't give a performance friendly asset. One sketchup conversion that reached the DLS recently had 51 texture files - the ideal is 1, or up to 4 if using bump mapping, reflection and a night mode.

p.s. I think that .3ds export only works for the pro version of SketchUp.

Um if someone gives me there email can they put it into TRS2006 for me because the pro version is way to much for my mom and I promice you won't be disipointed in the results of the station and it's all my first time with this and It looks really nice. Trust me it is so please can I get some help?

As itareus stated in his earlier reply, you would be far better off learning and using Blender 3D than sticking with Sketchup for Trainz modelling. Blender 3D is free (just Google for it) and will create files that can be imported into Trainz. Like all 3D modelling programs there is a long and steep learning curve - far longer and steeper than the curve for Sketchup. Now that I have retired I am going to start on that curve myself.

Look i am using sketchup because i am highly experienced with it

Well then Jacobchgo19 if you know how to export then can you help please cuz i did the steps but i cant get past one of then cuz i dont have what is needed so can you help me export it into TRS2006 please?

I have also used Sketchup and I do not doubt you but that does not alter the fact that SketchUp --> Trainz, while possible, is generally not worth the effort. Even if you manage to do the file conversion successfully you will still need to use a full 3D package such as Blender or GMax to finish the job. Trainz needs additional data that Sketchup simply does not provide.

There are plenty of posts in these forum that explain the issues.
