I am a bit confused with the DEM process. If someone creates a DEM of a certain route, and then sends it to you to lay track and the scenery and all that, do I need TransDEM itself?
A DEM is just a color coded or shaded map, a graphic, which you can use to create a Trainz terrain with the corresponding contours. You will need TransDEM or HOG to create the Trainz terrain. If you are refering to the Trainz terrain itself that someone is sending you, created using one of those programs, then all you need to do is lay track.

To add to the confusion: A DEM, which stands for "Digital Elevation Model", is actually a geo data resource and has nothing to do with Trainz yet. A program like HOG (with MicroDEM) or TransDEM use the DEM as an input to shape the terrain of a Trainz route.
These programs also paint the ground with additional map resources. That's where a certain set of ground textures will be needed. The map on the ground provides navigational aid to place your objects in Trainz Surveyor.
The more correct term for such blank Trainz routes would be "DEM-based".
As TransDEM has simplified the task of creating the route from geo data resources, it has become a do-it-yourself job for the average route builder who longer needs to be an expert in geodesy or cartography.
Calling geophil........
I sent you an e-mail yesterday to your 'info' adress. I want to know if I can update my TransDem v.1.3 directly to the latest version which is comatible with TRS2010. What version is that? I also included my purchase info in the e-mail. No response yet.
C38nws, please excuse my borrowing your thread; I'm just trying to get geophil's attention
